After just a short time using this application. I have a few suggestions for improvements. * Better tools for forking paths * Paths specifically for docks * More models (more models are always nice) * A way to avoid snapping (something like holding ctrl) * Some way for us to create custom areas (like castle courtyard, throne room, guardhouse) * More ways to modify paths using the cog wheel buttons (adding doors and windows to walls, gates to palisades (there is no palisade gate model that i saw btw)) * Global overlay effects (fog, map border) * Allow for multiple map views of the same map (something like LOD) Overall I am excited to see what else comes from Canvas of Kings

i think it would be really cool to export maps as a .gif, so i can keep the smoke and fog animations on my dnd tabletop rather than just a static png

Extremely robust but currently limited framework for quickly building out tactical-scale maps for tabletop RPGs, forum games, &c. There are currently three factors that need to be addressed for this to be a fully-fledged mapping tool with a useful degree of functionality: 1. The current asset library, although aesthetically pleasing, is fairly limited. You can manage fairly detailed forests and meadows, small farming/fishing villages, and little else. Opening the tool up to asset pack addon mods on the workshop would, as others have noted, be a massive boon. 2. Scale. The maximum map size currently supported without technical issues is likewise limited. Even if additional assets were present you'd be forced to export larger maps as many chunks and stitch them together manually if you wanted to do large cities, dungeons, ruins, naval battles, &c. The area designation tools can't populate a space larger than ~10% of the largest supported map size, either, and do not add assets reliably at anything much below max size. 3. Base maps. Currently the only option for the base map layer is open temperate grassland. Additional base map types e.g. open water (without needing to paint a bunch of smaller chunks), subterranean, fortress/dungeon interior, desert, &c. would be a large boost to flexibility (provided themed assets were also available). On the whole this is a very promising tool but it is, as the store page notes, still fairly early in development. I don't regret spending the money to support it but would not recommend doing so if you're hoping for immediate access to a fully built-out mapping tool for your campaign or game.
