Awesome story and gameplay. Graphics also look pretty good for 2009 product. Animations and cutscenes sometimes look clunky but it's alright. If you enjoy western theme then you should try this.

Detailed and Positive Review of "Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood" [quote=Wendrex] "Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood" is one of the standout titles in the western genre, offering an immersive experience that blends intense action, a compelling narrative, and a detailed recreation of the Wild West. Developed by Techland, the game excels with engaging gameplay, an emotionally charged story, and an authentic atmosphere that makes players feel like part of an epic western adventure. In this review, we’ll explore the key aspects of "Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood" and highlight what makes it one of the best experiences in the western subgenre. 1. Narrative and Storyline "Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood" features a deep and emotional story set during the American Civil War, focusing on the McCall brothers, Ray and Thomas, and their moral conflicts regarding loyalty, greed, and family. The plot avoids the typical western clichés by exploring the internal struggles of the characters and their complex relationships, making the story more impactful. The two protagonists, Ray and Thomas, have very different motivations, which creates an interesting dynamic in gameplay. Ray, the older and more violent brother, seeks power and wealth, while Thomas, younger and more morally centered, is equally impulsive. The game alternates between the perspectives of these two characters, providing a full view of the events, culminating in an emotionally charged series of betrayals, redemptions, and dramatic decisions. The story is well-written and continuously keeps the player engaged with the characters’ choices, leading to a satisfying, albeit tragic, conclusion filled with consequences. Additionally, the game features excellent dialogue and voice acting that brings the characters to life, helping to build the tension and drama of the narrative. 2. Gameplay and Combat Mechanics "Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood" blends first-person shooting mechanics with cinematic action moments and a series of unique features that stand out in the western genre. The game’s focus is on gunplay, and it does so expertly. The weapons are varied, including pistols, rifles, shotguns, and even bows, and each weapon has its own handling style and characteristics. One of the most interesting mechanics in the game is the "Concentration Mode," which allows players to slow down time and aim with precision at multiple enemies simultaneously, creating a cinematic and epic action feel. This mechanic is especially useful in intense confrontations, offering satisfying moments when executed well. In addition to combat, the game also features exploration and small puzzle-solving elements, though the primary focus remains on the action. Alternating between the two main characters, Ray and Thomas, adds another layer of variety to the gameplay, as each character has unique skills. Ray is more adept at close combat and aggressive attacks, while Thomas excels in long-range precision and strategy. 3. Environment and Visual Design The setting in "Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood" is one of its greatest strengths. The game does an excellent job recreating the American Wild West, with all its rugged and natural aspects, including dry deserts, dusty towns, abandoned farms, and vast mountains. Each location is packed with detail, creating a sense of authenticity and immersion. The environments are vibrant and varied, ranging from desolate villages to majestic landscapes, and the design team did an impressive job capturing the aesthetic and atmosphere of the Wild West. The use of lighting and weather is effective, with the blazing desert sun or sudden storms helping to enhance the dramatic tone of the game. The animations of the horses and weapon details are also well executed, reinforcing immersion. Moreover, the music in the game complements the setting perfectly. The soundtrack, which blends epic themes with more melancholic tones, creates the ideal atmosphere for each moment in the story, whether during a tense shootout or a quieter exploration scene. The background music is subtle yet effective, intensifying the experience without overshadowing the action. 4. AI and Challenges The AI of enemies is quite challenging, providing a tense and satisfying experience, especially on higher difficulty settings. Enemies take cover and attempt to flank the player, creating a constant feeling that strategic thinking is necessary to come out victorious. However, at times, the AI can feel predictable, especially during more linear sections of the game, but overall, it offers a good balance of challenge and fun. The challenges in the game aren’t just limited to enemy confrontations, but also include small hunting and exploration missions, such as searching for items or helping other characters along the way. The game’s difficulty can be adjusted based on the player’s preferences, and there are plenty of side missions that reward exploration. 5. Technical Aspects and Performance In terms of performance, "Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood" shines, especially for its release period. Techland managed to balance visual complexity with good performance, ensuring a stable and smooth frame rate. While the game doesn’t feature ultra-realistic graphics, it does present detailed textures and fluid animations, with an artistic design that effectively conveys the Wild West atmosphere. Furthermore, transitions between different phases of the game—whether in action-packed moments or calmer exploration sequences—are smooth and uninterrupted. The game maintains a good pace, alternating between fast-paced action and quieter moments of exploration and story, keeping the player engaged. 6. Replayability and Value "Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood" offers a good amount of replayability, with side missions and a variety of weapons and combat styles to experiment with. Additionally, alternating between the two main characters, Ray and Thomas, provides a new perspective on the story, allowing players to revisit the game with a slightly different experience. The game also includes a multiplayer mode, which, while not the primary focus, offers additional fun and competition with western-style combat modes. This mode doesn’t add much to the narrative but serves as a nice option for those seeking more action after completing the campaign. Conclusion: An Unforgettable Wild West Experience "Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood" is an excellent example of how the western genre can be combined with an engaging narrative, exciting gameplay mechanics, and a rich, immersive world. With its deep story, thrilling combat, and well-crafted setting, the game is one of the best options for fans of action and adventure in the western genre. Techland did an impressive job creating a Wild West world with emotional depth, intense action, and a true sense of immersion. "Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood" is not just a shooter; it’s an epic journey of loyalty, betrayal, and morality that leaves a lasting impact on those who play it. Final Rating: 9/10

This definitely a step up from the previous Call of Juarez in terms of gameplay Aka shooting which feels a little bit like COD and graphics. Also the prequel story is pretty interesting + the chemistry between the two brothers is actually good only downside is the janky 1 VS 1 Duels

Once again, really wish Steam offered a mediocre recommendation option. Short answer: If you really like fast-paced FPS's, get it on sale. If you're open to something new, give it a go. If you never played Call of Juarez 1, you'll probably like this one. But as a guy who like Call of Juarez? Honestly, not up to snuff with the first game for me. Call of Juarez had a slower, more adventurous feel to it. It was atmospheric, and lonely, and its environments felt so open, and the pace slow enough that you could actually act on the desire to explore that openness, that it felt more like a real open-world adventure minus the infamous failings of an open-world adventure. Call of Juarez 1 was meaningful, immersive, foreboding, and had a message, a meaning to tell, to walk away with after you beat the game and shut down your computer. Call of Juarez Bound in Blood is a hyperactive action game. It's not awful by any means; in fact, the action is successfully smooth and gives you plenty to work with. Singlehandedly that's why I switched the recommendation from "No" to "Yes" at about this paragraph. Targeting has unique touches to make it easier and more rewarding to find your mark, and special shooting moves - including one of my favorite things to do in Call of Juarez 1, the slow-mo two-shooter quickdraw as Ray - are back. Oh yeah, and yes: Ray McCall, not yet a Reverend, is here. So is his little brother who we learned about near the end of CoJ1. Big environments are here again, but everything else about the game's presentation makes it feel like you're not meant to just walk around and take it in like in Call of Juarez 1. In many levels, enemies just keep coming to the point that when you finally have a break, you just don't care about exploration anymore. For me, though, the biggest issue is that the despicable wife-beater of a "father", an off-screen character in Call of Juarez 1, is a playable character in this game, and you're stuck either playing as him or having him right there along for the ride. All the other things about this game- like the undeniably clever and memorable banter the brothers share as you fight, the intended plot and levels, the thoughts to have about the morals of what your character's doing- I can't focus on it knowing that this misogynistic abusive filth pile whose death was a relieving happening in Call of Juarez 1 is now someone we're supposed to feel empowered through or care about. It's distracting and ruins almost every big moment that Bound by Blood is supposed to deliver. Reverend Ray McCall was very flawed in the first game, but even he wasn't an abuser. He just stewed alone in his miserable life and took out his self-loathing by preaching fire and brimstone to the world around him. And credit where it's due: My guy, Ray McCall, is in this game, and seeing the prick he was to compare it to the prick he becomes is immensely insightful. The thing is him and his little brother are the *only* characters worth caring about; I'd have much preferred this game just be focused on him, or they could have had the common love interest in this plot (who's a likewise important offscreen character in 1) be the other gunslinger. Her, I'd actually like to feel powerful through and hear what she has to say with Ray. ___ Granted, much of this is my opinion and taste. Objectively, it's a smooth playing game and a pretty good step in for FPS fans proper who care more about action than about exploration, atmosphere, or plot. However, for those of us non-FPS-players who stepped outside of our comfort zone to try Call of Juarez 1 and *loved it*, I can't help but want to put these warnings up.
