It's Always Nice to See Developers Improve. From The Cat Lady, to Downfall, to Lorelai, and now Burnhouse Lane, it is always lovely to see how developers stick to one genre and keep improving upon their formula. Harvester Game is such a studio. Their horror adventures have always been a niche but memorable experience. The fourth game, Burnhouse Lane, is probably the best one so far. It has a balance amount of horror and relaxing moments. The dev tries something new and implements some action-focus gameplay to spice up the flow(commendable, even though they are probably the worst part of the game). Things I Like About Burnhouse Lane: Overall Tone and Atmosphere There are going to be a lot of comparison here. [*]Implementing more color schemes certainly give the game a smoother tone in contrast to their earlier titles, which are pure black and white. Less oppressive, more relaxing. [*]The setting is also less extreme in comparison. Previous titles took on some heavy issues in a really "in your face" style, while Burnhouse Lane tries to ease players into the tension and horror slowly. Don't worry though, the messed-up stuff is still in here. [*]The background design is also tidier than the previous titles. This makes spotting items easy. [*]To me the ups and downs of a horror game is essential. You can't just throw scary stuff at the players and expect it to work every time. There needs to be some down-times in between to keep players from feeling fatigue. Burnhouse Lane does a good job at balancing the pace of the story. Things I Like And Dislike About Burnhouse Lane: Platformer and Action I appreciate the dev tries something new. No matter the result, it is always something worth praising. Like [*]In order to make things fresh the developers venture into the unfamiliar territory, adding combat and light platformer into their horror adventure. [*]This decision from time to time makes the overall experience less oppressive and the pace of the game more flexible. Dislike [*]However, these parts of the game are also unfortunately the worst during my playthrough. It could be a deliberate design choice, or it could be the developers are inexperienced in these designs. [*]For the action part, it is really awkward to use. Axe's swing sometimes can be deceiving. The swing clearly connects to the enemy's torso but the hit registration is delayed for some reason. As a result, the enemy can "safely" grab you despite you hitting it; Guns also don't fare well either. The hit registration on guns are confusing. Bullets seem to de-spawn beyond half of the screen, or don't trigger the registration beyond half of the screen. [*]For platformer part, there are many oversights. The platforms are way too dark to see, or they blend in environment way too good. The jump mechanic is also wonky to use. The control feels awkward. The sprint-jumping can be frustrating to judge the distance. Things I Dislike About Burnhouse Lane: Minor Complaints [*]Some puzzles are vague in terms of the clues you get. [*]Some levels are too dark.

Burnhouse Lane is a horror point and click adventure game developed by Harvester Games, the main developer behind The Devil Came Through Here saga which includes games “The Cat Lady”, “Downfall” and “Lorelai”; games which I had played previously over the last year or two. In fact, the game originally started off as a sequel (thematically) to The Cat Lady, named The Cat Lady 2 with a different protagonist before heading off in a different direction entirely and renamed Burnhouse Lane according to a Reddit AMA with one of the lead developers Rem. According to Rem, he didn’t want to do it with Susan Ashworth as it would “ruin the legend and make everyone hate it” which makes a lot of sense considering her character arc throughout the games. They also changed the name because it’s a cool name and they wanted to make a standalone story that people unfamiliar with The Cat Lady would want to play. As for me, I’ve heard about this game for a while through Jankbaron Dom and his video on it before later purchasing it during Steam’s Summer Sale 2023. Having beaten Lorelai this year, the friend who I usually stream horror games for on Saturday wanted to see this game as she enjoyed the other ones and over the past couple of weeks I ended up playing it before finishing it up yesterday along with Missing Hiker and He F u c k ed the Girl Out of Me. The gameplay for the most part is on par with the previous Harvester Games experiences that I’ve played. Walking from side to side, navigating different areas, solving puzzles and engaging in conversations with perhaps an action scene or chase scene every now and then. However, this game gives you some new cool stuff to do as well! Throughout the game for example, you’ll unlock different power ups that involve different cats, for example forcing someone to reveal their truth against their will (up to twice a day if you get a certain totem) and possessing objects needed for puzzles. There are certain combat sections as well, pretty much always involving shooting a pistol for a brief section or swinging an ax. One thing I will say is that for the most part these boss battles are solid, except one boss fight: the mannequin creature thing on the ship. This guy is kind of rough to fight and involved me resetting the checkpoint multiple times due to three things: the instant kill that’ll happen if this creature grabs you once, the slow swing speed of the axe and the hitbox surrounding the creature. All of this works against you, and as such that section was a bit of a slog to get through that felt unenjoyable. Luckily there is a dodge button (RB on the Xbox Controller) where you can dodge past enemies at the right time as well as crash through brick walls and such but it’s on a bit of a cooldown as well while you’re navigating. The second boss fight against this creature feels a lot worse, but only if you’re trying to do the Goddess of Axe achievement. See this fight pretty much has you die, before possessing Bloody Mary’s corpse and chasing it down with a chainsaw in a pretty cathartic moment. If you go for the Axe achievement, you can shoot it once with a Desert Eagle before swinging the ax fifty times or just do the full seventy if you didn’t find the only bullet for the Eagle. If you didn’t know about the possession and you reset to the last checkpoint, then you have the chase sequence all over again BEFORE the boss fight which sucks so it requires A LOT of patience. There are chase sequences like I said before, moments in which good social etiquette (along with finding certain items) will lead to the Golden Ending, adventure game styled puzzles, and branching dialogue choices. I think one of my favorite things gameplay wise is just making George’s sandwiches because I love that guy, he’s great and deserves all of the sandwiches in the world. Basically to round up the gameplay, Burnhouse Lane is basically the refinement of all of the gameplay design that they worked on previously. The one downside I will say (for most PC players at least) is that the game is mostly focused on Controller Support with a lack of keyboard apparently, and you can’t switch out the button prompts though I’ll say that I thought the control scheme for the game on my Xbox Controller felt fine. (Plot, Sound Design, Graphics here: https://www.backloggd.com/u/gamemast15r/review/2015546/) Burnhouse Lane was a game that I had thoroughly enjoyed these past couple of weeks and one that I would say is definitely a “buy this game and play it” for this Halloween season if you’re in the mood for some sad horror side scroller point and click vibes. The soundtrack hits all the emotional high points, the graphics and atmosphere knock it out of the park between the beautifully painted backgrounds of the real world and hellish landscape of Burnhouse Lane, the gameplay continues perfecting the old formula while trying to do something new with combat which while it misses sometimes hits more often than not, and the plot for the most part is fantastic other than two parts at the end that took me out of it a bit. If I had to choose on a ranking scale which one is my favorite, this one would be tied with Lorelai at second though might be inching out over it just due to the fact that it strikes and hits a lot where it means to as a “less depressing” version of The Cat Lady. As Ii said before, if you’re into point and click horror adventures than Burnhouse Lane is something that will strike the interest of fans who are into that stuff and might even bring in some people that aren’t usually into it. Just be aware that if you get into it, there will be some themes of s u i cide and such that tie integrally into the story as well as Angie Weathers herself. As for Rem himself and the rest of Harvester Games, I’m not really sure what they’re working on next or IF they’re working on anything next so soon, but what I will say is I’m very much looking forward to whatever these guys have to offer, though I’m curious as to whether this’ll be part of a trilogy or if it’s going to be a series of standalones as well. I don’t know, buy this game on consoles or PC. I love this game, and I'll still give it a thumbs up, but I'll tell you why I likely won't finish it. This game is a true spiritual successor to The Cat Lady in all the right ways. Reading the bad reviews, it seems like a lot of folks miss how the chapters' bosses and the characters on the farm are the many faces of the main character staring down the barrel of her own quickly-arriving mortality. Where The Cat Lady threw us into mental health immediately, Angie's struggle in Burnhouse Lane is centered in her initial avoidance of/hiding from the reality of her mortality (which is coming to her in ways she can't control) and her turn toward that mortality in order to boldly face both it and all the hopes and should-haves that she has to release given her circumstances. I find the metaphors and story elements really profound, much like I found those in The Cat Lady to be profound. Where it loses me is in the area of combat and platforming functionality. If I wanted an action-heavy game, I wouldn't come to this developer. I've always been drawn to Rem for a more mental/emotional experience with a lot of puzzle work and action that, when it occurs, serves the plot without breaking the immersion of that mental/emotional experience. Timing and platforming challenges, having to strike enemies multiple times quickly and avoid their reach, and having non-story-serving enemies are all things pay homage to classic action-horror games like Silent Hill but (in my opinion) don't enrich the story. In Burnhouse Lane, I find myself having to switch out of that more cerebral experience I crave in Harvester games in order to go into action mode, which is distracting and difficult for me. Maybe someone who likes FPS games or other action-heavy games wouldn't have this difficulty, but for me, it negatively impacts the experience to the point that I'm no longer mentally in the game by the time such a sequence is over. Would love to see some accommodation for this in the future, such as a slow or low-action mode available. Overall, the work is good, and it's (in my opinion) the best game since The Cat Lady. I just can't keep up to the end for now. Still absolutely looking forward to anything and everything else the Harvester team release.

It's another Harvester Games game, if you liked their previous titles you will enjoy this one as well. The usual gloomy, fked up story-line that you would expect from them. Different endings depending on how you do and your choices throughout the game. The cat lady is still my favourite title, but this one is better than Lorelai. ps: it's good to see they are publishing their own games now.
