This game is amazing. An incredibly solid RPG that fans of the Mario RPG games will sure love. I was not expecting to spend so much time on this little RPG about bugs. I've played a bunch of other RPGs with similar mechanics, and my issues with them are simply the games are far too easy. I'm 99% sure that they never even made a game over screen for the Mario and Luigi series because the developers must have known that no living soul would ever see it. But this game has the right amount of challenge, since it gives you the hard mode from the very start. The battles feel well designed and tactical since every single enemy in the game is designed with a clear weakness to one of your party members abilities. The story is fun, the characters are so lovable, the music is catchy. 10/10 wish I could play it for the first time all over again.

this game almost perfectly replicates that feeling 15-ish years ago when i would play paper mario thousand year door on my game cube it feels like stepping on a perfectly crunchy leaf in that spot between fall and winter it feels like the first bite of a fresh crisp apple its combat is fun and snappy, movement feels like your a kid going on an adventure, the whole game is bug and insect themed and the story has got hooks and barbs, as in i'm hooked and want to finish this game even if i'm stressed because i want to see where its story goes

With lovable characters, witty writings, clever improvements to the PM's battle system and much more, Bug Fables is definitely one of the games I've enjoyed the most. I'd like to highlight, however, the HUGE love and passion from the developers, which is evident throughout the whole game. This passion is seen on Bug Fables' many updates. Despite it already having a couple of years since its release, there's been lots of extra content. Content that could have EASILY been sold as a DLC; yet its free for everyone. From more boss fights, equipment, control over the ways you play, etc., it makes me genuinly happy to suddenly see this game giving more to its players. Bug Fables is one of the absolute best purchases I've ever done.

Spoiler-Free Review After 100% completing Bug Fables... I would have never expected a game like this to blow me away like it did, even if it's now nearing the butt end of 2024. There's so much personality in this game; if you're a dialogue junkie like me who loves to roam around a city and wonder what your team has to say, chances are they'll say something unique for every unique NPC throughout the game for no reason. I can't believe they had so much lore stacked into this game which is practically set around bugs; things I would normally pay zero mind to in real life. But it actually expanded my interest in these cute sentient creatures, and the world they've created for themselves. I'm just shocked I enjoyed it that much. Hard Mode Experience I played the entire game on Hard Mode, and is it doable? Yes, and actually it makes the fights way more intense since nearly everything does more damage and has more defense and health. But, only do it if you're okay with going back and forth hitting up store clerks & chefs to help stock you up for those boss fights coming up. You actually have to pay attention to what they might be weak to, and you'll need to utilise anything to the best of your ability to beef up your team. A good way to note if you're strong enough to handle the next boss is if you've been grinding for awhile to the point where the overworld minions only give you 1 exp. Also, sometimes they'll have the save point glow yellow to help warn you if a boss is in that room or in the next one (which also thankfully heals you, so items saved). Feel like the fights are too hard? Go grind some explorer levels! Get items! Get hidden collectables strewn across the map that might help you take the edge! Currency sucks? There's a berry bank in town that allows you to get interest every 30 minutes if you give them the berries to open the account. I left my computer on overnight to gather some and I guess I could technically attribute 30-something hours to me being AFK because of it. Overworld Exploration As you move through the world, you'll be able to swap in-between your team members to do some nifty tricks to help you either reach something that's normally too far away, hit/stun an enemy, use some lever, or reach a hidden area. This means swapping your party leader is actually important to the game, which showcases a more cohesive necessity of why each bug is important to the team. And the way they introduce each skill is often baked into the story, which allows you to see your characters grow throughout each chapter and maybe head back to an area you knew they could probably interact with where they couldn't before. There are a lot of puzzles strewn about in this game, and they actually force you to think quite a bit even when trying to collect everything for the achievements. I can't say too much about them, but I was surprised how much variety they were able to pack in for each area without overlapping the same kind of puzzle or making it feel stale. One thing I didn't like while trying to 100% was that were those very few platforms out of camera view which forced you to take leaps of faith and discover them. While it was a surprising notion, I was slightly annoyed. (At least the game gives you a fortune-teller NPC in the Golden Settlement to tell you vaguely where it is & most of the answers are already on Reddit or on Steam forums) Combat & Mechanics The game has a lot of turn-based combat. You'll be able to react to enemy attacks, by trying to time your blocks. The better you are at predicting the timing of it, the more damage you negate. Each character as their own unique quick-time way of attacking. It could be guessing from pressing Z, X, or C, hitting a green bar, or releasing a key as the bar is filled, and etc. The skills also play into this, as well, making for a more involved combat experience versus simply clicking the move you want to use and watching your character do it. So if you fail, you'll see your bug trip up, fall, just straight up mess up the move and you have no choice but to laugh at your failure. There's a lot of unique attack patterns in this game, and lots of minibosses and bosses to simultaneously keep you on your toes and amuse by their design. Level ups give you the option to give your team more HP to be tanky, Team Points (this game's MP), or Medal Points. I put most of my levels in Medal Points because Medals offer you the opportunity to broaden your strategies and make the game easier, like giving making a tank, glass cannon, more skill abilities, overworld protection or purposely giving yourself a status debuff to trigger a play. But if you put all your levels into Medals... you're going to probably KO very fast. But that's all up to the way you want to experience the game. And if you regret it deep enough there's a NPC later on that lets you reallocate stats. Conclusion Game's like a solid 9.5/10 in my book. It wasn't too difficult to discourage me, but instead force me to analyse and adjust my strategies to better take on my foes. I love the lore and the story. I left it out purposely in this review because I feel it's better if my own analysis doesn't bog it down for anyone else. My only gripe comes from trying to 100% and not being able to find collectables as easily as I'd hoped-- but that's also life. Can't like every little thing about it; and I still ended up being able to 100% in the end. You will not regret this purchase if this art, premise, and love for RPGs entices you the way it did for me. Enjoy!

I'm writing this review after receiving 100% of the Achievements. Like many, the Paper Mario series (specifically The Thousand Year Door), touched my life in ways I can't explain with just words. It is one of my favorite games of all time. I got Bug Fables the day of release, and it did not disappoint. It is without question, ALSO one of my favorite games I have ever played. If you have played and enjoyed the original Paper Mario series at any point, playing this gem is a REQUIREMENT. And if you haven't, go play the remake of Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door that is about to come out. And then play this, you will be SO glad you did. (This review is coming years after I first played it, I realized I never reviewed it and had to do my part)
