This is the perfect example of why steam needs to add neutral reviews because Botany Manor is exactly the game that can be summed up as "yes, but...". Yes: [*] great story and storytelling, [*] interesting premises, i.e. you get to be a researcher working in a beautiful mansion (that's my dream job) , [*] vibes; it's cozy, relaxing, not too difficult. But: [*] for this price -- not enough content, [*] for a game about botany -- the graphics quality of the vast majority of the plants is underwhelming to say the least, [*] if I'm carrying a book with my research in it, why can't I have the clues that I've already found stored in that book? Half of the game was just me walking around the mansion to triple check the clues since my memory has a skill issue. Overall: yes, but wait for a sale.

First thing I'll say is the price is a little steep. The game is fantastic, but far too short for how much it costs. The story is endearing and infuriating at times, really making you feel how I imagine Arabella felt at the time. The ending almost made me tear up, and the gameplay is really fun. Nearing the end things get a bit too far apart and it feels like it takes ages to get to place. The lilypads were also a little silly haha For £22.50, I rate it 6.5/10; if it was £15, I'd rate it 8.5/10.

Very cute game but there is one major issue. There is not enough game play for the price point in my opinion. I spent just under 4 hours playing and I completed the game in one sitting. Additionally, during this play through I almost perfected the game except for a few Steam achievements. There is so much more that could've been done to add to the game play, for example, adding more plants that needed pH levels adjusted/ adding more plants that needed specific types of pots. The game maker(s) could've also added on more game play with the various critters they introduced. Overall, I am a little disappointed. My opinions aside, this game has intriguing puzzles to keep you occupied for a few hours if you can justify the price point.

A solid puzzle game. I recommend taking screenshots of all important looking documents you find in steam by hitting F12 then reviewing them by hitting Shift+Tab, otherwise you'll never remember where you read a particular thing. The book allows you to organize things you've found but oddly you can't review them from in there, so you have to wander back to where you found the document the first time. I started taking screenshots after the first chapter and it went much faster after that. None of the puzzles are too tricky, although I do wish there were more involving the plants I'd grown. Most of the plants you grow aren't used in the manor in any way. It would have been nice if they opened new areas more often instead of using keys. The graphics are music are very charming. They really nailed that part.

Botany Manor is a lovely little game. But it really is little. It took me around 3 hours to 100% it minus a few achievements for solving puzzles wrong in humourous ways, and I was by no means rushing. For more context, the demo is 20% of the game. For the very short play time and little-to-no replay value, I do think the £22.50 standard price is a bit steep. Chants of Sennaar is £5 cheaper and gave me 3x as much play time, if we're looking at pure price-to-play-time metrics of course. With all that said, what little time I had with the world of Botany Manor was a truly wonderful experience. The game is one of those ones where its value doesn't come from any particular component, but instead how all those components come together. The graphics and art are simple, the story/world building is reasonably shallow, and the puzzles are well designed but unlikely to pose much of a challenge to anyone who's ever played a puzzle game before... But experiencing all those things *together* really makes Botany Manor greater than the sum of its parts. The graphics aren't breaking any boundaries, but the visuals along with the soundscape *do* excellently capture the mood of a quaint summer's afternoon at a grand countryside mansion. The occasional newspaper clippings and letters dotted about also help present information and context for the player character that the conclusion of the game has a nice emotional punch to it. And together those things gave me enough motivation to want to work out how grow my lovely puzzling plants beyond just solving puzzles for the sake of it. So I would really recommend this to a prospective buyer only if *the whole package* appeals to you. If you're here entirely for brainteasers and intend to plough through without any particular care for the environment the game is set in then this probably isn't for you. Personally, I loved it. Although I do think it should be cheaper or, preferably, longer.
