As a fan of Void Scrappers, I decided to check out this mining shmup from developer 8BitSkull. A bit like Super Motherload, the story plays out in text conversations as you carve new mineshafts and collect gems, but unlike in that game, you don't have to ascend to the surface to complete a run. Let alone periodically to refuel and repair. Instead, the fuel supply and hull integrity of your ship needs to last until you reach your objective. Otherwise, it's a failed run, though you get to keep the collected gems to use extending your craft's range, adding armor to its hull, or upgrading the guns. Yep, you blast your way through a variety of different types of rock strata using a gatling gun, which is helpful also against enemies who appear in increasing numbers as the game goes on and you clear more levels which are represented by grid squares in the game's overworld map. Depending on the character you choose, there is a recharging special ability, though I have a tough time imagining playing the game without my chosen character's ability of a boost that carves through rock like butter and makes it much easier to reach the objective within one tank of gas (and some pickups along the way). While I was still reserving judgment a bit, two hours in, at the four hour mark I realized that not only is this game addictive, it's pretty fun. The upgrade system does an admirable job of keeping the player right on the edge of the mining craft being powerful enough to reach the end of the longer levels, without making this feel a dawdle trivialized by these improvements. I could easily walk away, now, and be satisfied with the experience, but I'm still enjoying myself and will keep going to try and clear the rest of the levels. One of the things that I appreciated about Void Scrappers was that, unlike a lot of the "forever games" in the genre, it had an attainable ending. And this looks to be similar in that respect.

A great twist for a genre that has quickly become saturated. Since release, the game has seen some continued improvements. Overall, it needs some general polish but is great fun in short runs. Certain combinations can result in major frame drops. One time it caused the game to completely lock my system. I rarely felt powerful enough to melt through levels, a bit more end-game upgrades would be nice. They are working on what felt like an abrupt end to the storyline / bloated remaining levels. A purpose for all the gems/gold after all the current upgrades would be nice. Some options that come to mind are: [*]bolt-on and consumable re-roll (number of re-rolls could be unlocked with extra gold toward end game) [*]bolt-on save option for future use (while selecting another) [*]bolt-on block to eliminate the option from appearing again (in that run or a set number of locks game-wide) [*]bolt-on extra choice upgrade [*]bolt-on carry-over for next run [*]upgrade for fuel blocks to provide more fuel Additional Details Operating System Ubuntu Linux 22.04 x64 CPU Ryzen 7 5800h GPU RX 6700m Game Saves Automatically Technical Notes Defold game engine, no major problems

Fun for what it is, but there's a lot more playtime than there is content. Completing what feels like the main narrative of the game only involves completing ~25% of the maps, and even before that you're mostly getting consumables (that are automatically consumed,) or upgrades that don't really change the best strategy. Once you can make gems explode, and make explosions fire bullets, you can blow through most things. To that point, though, the game can't handle well when there's a lot of stuff on the screen. Once you've got dozens of explosions and hundreds of bullets going, the game slows down a good bit even on a solid PC, and the edge of the reality bubble becomes very clear, as you'll come across distinct straight lines where all your devastation just failed to be calculated. I enjoyed it, but I feel like I got everything I was going to enjoy out of playing it in 5 hours. Take a look at the purchase price and make your own decision on whether it's worth 5 hours of entertainment.

I finished all achievements including 100%. But I still have some disappointing parts. At first there were stories, quests, upgrades, a lot more then I expected. But after progressing about 50% of the map, there's nothing more to do in the game. And I've got disappointed in 3 parts. First, there were no place to spend gold after upgrading everything. I know other games like this also have no place to spend gold other than upgrades, but the problem was that upgrades were finished before even progressing 50%. This was disappointing because, the fun of going around the map is to get more gold. But when the upgrades were over, I lost my purpose of going around the map and started pressing 'only the down arrow' until I reached the bottom. There should be somewhere else to spend gold, or at least the upgrades should be more expensive so that the upgrading gets finished at the later part of the game. Second disappointing part was that nothing happened at 100% of the progression. So the last 40% of the game was pretty same to me, because I just pressed the 'down arrow' till I reached the bottom. I got bored from doing that, but I still played the game to see the ending. I thought there would be a last fight, a story, or at least an ending credit, but nothing happened... Last disappointing part was that there's no reroll in the game. If there was a reroll, I could have tried making drone build or explosion build, close combat build or etc and this would have gave me more fun. Even if it's not that, I could've evaded the situations like picking one of the 3 skills that I don't want. But It's still worth the money for me,

Yeah I can already tell I will get hooked to this game, it scratches that age old Motherload itch and then some. Can't wait to see what's to be discovered and just how powerful I will get.
