Sideways thumb. It's missing something for me to really care and get invested in it, but it's pretty easy to load it up and play through a few stages and have fun.

As a fan of Void Scrappers, I decided to check out this mining shmup from developer 8BitSkull. A bit like Super Motherload, the story plays out in text conversations as you carve new mineshafts and collect gems, but unlike in that game, you don't have to ascend to the surface to complete a run. Let alone periodically to refuel and repair. Instead, the fuel supply and hull integrity of your ship needs to last until you reach your objective. Otherwise, it's a failed run, though you get to keep the collected gems to use extending your craft's range, adding armor to its hull, or upgrading the guns. Yep, you blast your way through a variety of different types of rock strata using a gatling gun, which is helpful also against enemies who appear in increasing numbers as the game goes on and you clear more levels which are represented by grid squares in the game's overworld map. Depending on the character you choose, there is a recharging special ability, though I have a tough time imagining playing the game without my chosen character's ability of a boost that carves through rock like butter and makes it much easier to reach the objective within one tank of gas (and some pickups along the way). While I was still reserving judgment a bit, two hours in, at the four hour mark I realized that not only is this game addictive, it's pretty fun. The upgrade system does an admirable job of keeping the player right on the edge of the mining craft being powerful enough to reach the end of the longer levels, without making this feel a dawdle trivialized by these improvements. I could easily walk away, now, and be satisfied with the experience, but I'm still enjoying myself and will keep going to try and clear the rest of the levels. One of the things that I appreciated about Void Scrappers was that, unlike a lot of the "forever games" in the genre, it had an attainable ending. And this looks to be similar in that respect.

BORE BLASTER is a fun little game that I did enjoy playing for 2/3 of the way. It's just fun to dive into the dig sites with your little helicopter, gathering crystals and upgrading your vehicle during the run. The goal is always to blast through rocks and stones fighting enemies and collecting resources on your descent to the big chest at the bottom of each dig site (that's your exit). The biomes vary, not just for the actual level but also depending on the depth you are in. Overall a very entertaining experience. However, once you have all of the permanent upgrades, the game becomes a bit boring in the last third. All you can use your resources for is buying one-off perks that give you more stats for a run. This makes the game too easy as you become overpowered pretty fast in a run. I can still recommend the game but would buy it in a sale.

+ It scratches my itch for mining and bullet hell. + Floods my brain with dopamine. - I died more times to the terrain than the enemies because the developer thought that CONTACT DAMAGE ON TERRAIN GEOMETRY was a good idea. (I seriously considered giving this a negative review on how frustrating it feels) - It's grindy, i've been playing for 6 hours and the last permanent upgrades takes 2 million each while you get on average 100k gold per map. Right now I am just rushing the objectives and the end each run for the "story". - Item balance has the same problem as the game "20 Minutes Till Dawn" where upgrading the main gun is always the best option as it synergizes with most upgrades. Everything else is a gimmick build, and some upgrades are either useless or a downgrade. + It's a simple formula of a game and it's somehow really fun. The average casual player is gonna have a blast playing this game, I guarantee. This game reminds me of a classic flash game called "Motherlode" or its sequel on steam, as the whole digging down on a limited fuel capacity gameplay felt similar, this has a lot more action of course. I wonder if it was actually inspired by it.

A cute little dig-to-the-core type game with roguelite elements. You've probably played this style of game before if you're looking at this genre, but you've never played it with quite this level of upgrading in a single run! Instead of just digging slightly faster or in a line, you get roguelike style upgrades on each run where you might end up with an explosive minigun build that causes gems to explode and shoot out projectiles that kill enemies and cause them to explode and shoot out more projectiles... I think you get it, there's a lot of explosions! And drones and bullets... Maybe not enough lasers. I think the "end-game" could use a bit of work as I finished most all of the story content as far as I can tell at about 70% game completion. I'm at close to 90% now I think with like a dozen levels left to clear and I don't expect there to be anything new, but I'm compelled enough to actually finish this one out!
