To Bootstrap Developers I do not dislike anything about Bootstrap. But I would like to share some Ideas or recommendations. 1.) There could be indigenous people through the island that you could trade with. Like gems found in chests on the beach or items they want. But you have to find an item or craft to blend in or they will try to kill you. 2.) More weapons like you can sharpen a stick or craft stone tools. You can also make a stone ax or pickaxe for chopping down trees for wood and mine for iron for crafting, or gems for trading. 3.) This is a stretch but if y’all could add multiplayer it could bring in more people to play the game and would be fun. Thanks for considering my ideas.

I can use a pistol to do the following: Shoot food Shoot open coconuts Shoot a campfire to light it Shoot a torch to light it Who knows what else. That's all I've been doing is figuring out what I can set on fire with a flintlock pistol. I'm sure I'll enjoy the game when I actually start playing it.

This review is hard to write because, well, there's nothing here. You can do and see everything within about 3-5 hours of game play and what's there is fun, but there isn't a lot of it and you will quickly run out of things to do and get bored. I've stopped playing the game after 3 and half hours simply because I'm waiting for more content. So, the game itself, how is it? Well, you spawn in and you need food and water, you also need to make a fire at night so you don't die to the darkness, think Don't Starve. The most common source of food and water right now, is coconuts, you find a coconut, crack it's shell on a rock, rip the fibers off (which double as tinder for lighting fires) and then smash the coconut itself open on the rock. As long as you don't spill all the water inside, since both halves of the coconut have water and they both have simple liquid physics which like to spill everywhere at the slightest movement, you will get a considerable amount of water out of one half, a little over a third of your thirst bar I think. Believe it or not, breaking open coconuts is surprisingly fun, it's not done through a menu or anything, like everything else in the game, you do it yourself which I really like. You can also eat the flesh of the coconut for food, so coconuts do a little bit of everything, they give you a ton of water, they give you a solid amount of food, and they provide tinder for starting fires. Now you've got that out of the way, you need to make a fire. You need 3 things to make a fire, tinder to get it started, wood to actually create a fire worth anything, and rocks to create a spark which ignites the tinder. Tinder can be fairly uncommon but coconuts are not, so generally you won't have an issue there, wood can only be found, not harvested so that means no chopping trees or anything, and rocks are the same way. Night comes and that's when you see (or hear) it, a beast, whether it's a bat, or some type of canine, or a giant lizard, all with their bright white eyes poking out of the darkness. At first this is great, it's atmospheric, you really don't know what you're dealing with at this moment so it's tense, Spoilers for how they work ahead, this WILL ruin the nights for you if you continue so be warned: they simply run around your campsite for the first night making noise and don't do much besides act intimidating, which works when, again, you don't know how they function. To put it simply, if there are enough beasts the music kicks in (which is really fucking good for some reason) and they start dive bombing you, avoiding the fire as much as possible. If you kill any, less show up in the future, and you can eat the corpse if you have a knife. Then day breaks, the beasts scatter and run away, and you move on. The current game play loop consists of running from area to area, setting up fires when you notice the sun getting a little too low for your liking, and consuming coconuts along the way. You don't have a backpack or pockets or...well... anything really, to carry stuff with, you only have your hands, at least at the start anyway. You can find a pistol holster to carry the classic flintlock pistol that you can find in chests + gunpowder and ammo, but that's it. There are other items you can get from chests like bottles which can be refilled with water from watering holes and even coconut water if you have a steady hand, a musket which I didn't bother unlocking, and a knife which is used to harvest meat from corpses. But, you can't carry any of this on your person, so if you have to climb a rope to proceed you'll have to leave this stuff behind, making it more or less worthless in the grand scheme of things + holding onto stuff for minutes at a time is really uncomfortable on the hand. Ultimately, what's here is fun, gathering and preparing food is fun, hunting, while basic and restricted to 2 animals (crabs and pink, flamingo-looking motherfuckers) is fun, unlocking stuff is fun, using the flintlock and missing all of your shots because it's smoothbore and you nail the neighbors dog is fun because it's a learning experience (also it doesn't have iron sights so that doesn't help.) The nights are not fun though, you are almost always just waiting for the night to end so you can continue the loop of walk to place setup fire wait, repeat. Assuming you don't get attacked at night and die, which is also not too exciting because until you get the pistol holster you don't have a real weapon to defend yourself with outside of a torch you might find in a chest or expertly positioning yourself around your fire to deflect any would-be beast attacks, you are mostly just waiting to either die or continue exploring. I'd only buy this if you're interested in supporting the devs because it's at its most affordable right now, otherwise, if you're expecting a full-bodied (or even half-bodied for that matter,) experience, you're gonna want to wishlist this and wait a few months.

UPDATE #1 Fixed Day Length! Game Is Now Fun! Developers Listen To Feedback & Are Fairly Quick To Release Patches After the initial update after release, I can now say this game is balanced in terms of day length and difficulty. Days now last roughly around 8 minutes from dusk to dawn compared to the abysmal 4-5 minutes. In my run, I was able to survive 15 days, however during those days I did face some challenge while I was exploring the island, but the challenge was actually quite thrilling and fun. Such a small change made this game enjoyable. There is lots of areas to explore and the basics of the gameplay is pretty damn solid for an early access game. What is this game? Bootstrap Island is a rogulite survival game set on a remote island. You play as a crew member of a ship wreck. You start with literally nothing. You have to use your wits to survive. Just like any survival game you must eat and drink. You will also need to build fires to survive night fall. The way you build fires is how you would in real-life, bundle up some driftwood, put in some tinder and actually hit two flint rocks to make a spark and set the tinder on fire. During the night, you are hunted by creatures (wolves, lizard beasts, gargoyles, and more). When you finally meet your demise during a run, you are graded on how long you have survived. Survive long enough and you unlock items for future runs that you find in chests. In the beginning, you can find a flintlock pistol and torch. You can unlock items like a musket, water bottle, and a knife just to name a few. Graphics & VR Interactions This game is quite good looking. In fact, the graphics are some of the best I have seen in a VR game. The lighting, especially inside a OLED headset such as the Bigscreen Beyond, is truely marvelous. I especially love the use of sun-shafts giving a sense of volumetric lighting/shadows. VR Interactions Interactions are quite satisfying, especially the coconut pealing. Also, the fire mechanics are very cool and definitely shows off what VR gaming can do in terms of interactions. Speaking of fires, I have got to say, the fire effects are truly next-gen. I have not seen fire building in a survival game so realistic. Kudos to the devs making such realistic fire effects. Plus the liquid simulation is VERY good (coconut milk and water in a bottle). The game also has a flintlock pistol and musket. These weapons are VERY good in VR. In fact, I have to say, you could not make these guns interesting in a flat-game. These are definitely weapons VR could only do correctly without it just being a tedious and long animation. You have to do everything: load the powder, drop the ball in, then pull the hammer back. So satisfying, but hard to master in stressful moments. Grabbing Issues Also, I have started to get used to the hop-up mechanic for grab, however, I still think there needs to be some polish to this mechanic to make it a bit easier to grab items. Aiming the hop-up sometimes just does not work. Virtual Crouching Feedback Another complaint I have is the virtual crouching. I play on a VR Treadmill. I am strapped in so bending down is a bit limiting for me so I have to use some sort of virtual crouching in VR games. Some games have better crouching than others. However, this game, I feel the crouching is too low. Perhaps have an adjustment bar in the game's options to adjust how low the virtual crouch goes. Ending Thoughts I have to say, after the update, I am now impressed. The game does show promise and I cannot wait to see what future content we get for this game. As of right now, it is quite a thrilling survival roguelite. Challenging, but its fair challenge.
