In the first hour I discovered a hidden ruin, rode a train into town, got robbed, talked to a few ghosts, enjoyed a tea house, learned how to scam traders, and activated a mysterious alter. A very relaxing, intuitive, and beautiful game, Book of Travels scratches a massive itch I didn't know I had. That itch as it turns out was the freedom to simply wander and explore uninhibited. There's no right or wrong way to play the game. You don't "win" or save the day, you simply do what you want. Nothing is required of you other than to satisfy your need to explore. Now for some this may sound boring or tedious and if that's you then you certainly shouldn't spend your money on this. For me though, I find it extremely rewarding and I can lose myself just wandering around. I love the character customization also as it gives you the freedom to really get creative and make the character how you imagine him or her. I reallllyy hope they expand the game because I want everything it has to offer.

This game is awesome. It is gorgeous and the exploration aspect of the game is stellar. I keep finding new things I've never seen before and I don't doubt I'll still be finding things when I start a new character. I've seen things my partner hasn't seen yet despite him having way more hours than me. Exploration is very important because you will encounter rare events and NPCs far off the beaten path. If you don't? You've likely gathered resources anyway, so its not really a big deal. If you are going to buy this game, keep in mind you aren't really supposed to be dashing everywhere doing everything as fast as you can. This isn't really a game you can speedrun or finish all the achievements in a week or two imo. Despite it not being a fast paced game, it is easy to get to places if you take a direct path. However I've often spent 2-3 times that time just exploring and gathering resources. The sound design and art make it very worth it. EDIT: As I play I am veryyy much realizing why people are frustrated by the inventory update. It's not a deal breaker, but I think it's worth deleting the portion where I say I don't think it's an issue. However, as a new player, it's less of a pressing issue than someone who may have been playing for awhile. Character creation may seem limited at first, but once you start playing the game and building your characters inventory and skills it is very easy to tell a story. For example, I encountered the not-deer without having any idea of what it was. I decided when I encountered the traveling knot trader (knots are spells) I chose to buy the knot that would allow me to turn into a deer. Materially it made sense since I had more reagents to use for the spell, but it also made sense for my character to take the not-deer as an omen or sign that the deer was the correct choice. My character also carries around flowers and collects them to store in their train station storage box. You can do a lot if you're creative with it, and you can also store that information in your characters bio! There are knots to change the colour of your characters clothing, if you don't like the default colouring. The journal is also a very very good addition to the game. Keeping notes on lore and quests helps navigate the world and figure out what's going on. It also can show you how far you've come in terms of your general understanding of the world. Multiplayer is awesome. I enjoy when I find a player in the wild because often I cannot tell unless I notice human-like movement patterns or see them on the map (which you can turn off). It's fun to wave to them and continue on your way, I have yet to journey with someone I don't know, but it is an option and you get buffs when you do. Emote only communication is new to me, but I'm enjoying it so far. I can understand that people may be frustrated with bugs, but the majority of my playtime has been bug free. The only bug I have encountered is the UI disappearing on very rare occasions when I try to click the trade option, but this can be fixed by exiting and reopening the game. The game doesn't take too long to open (even on a 2015 macbook lol) so its really only an issue if you catch a merchant right as they're leaving when the day switches over to night or vice versa. I only have had this happen once, and arguably it was my fault for not getting there sooner! It is a very calming game to me, and it's helping me slow down and appreciate things in my real life too. It's been nice to calm myself down before work or after a long day by meandering around in game. If this review seems all over the place its because this is my first review in a very long time but I really believe this game deserves all the praise it can get. Overall, I think this game is very very worth it. It is early access, so things may be buggy and things change as the game develops. With how much the game brings to the table and how much there already is, I believe it's worth it. If you have 40$ and want to buy a game that is very replay-able and calming, I highly recommend you buy it.

I've been looking for AGES for a slow paced game where I can just travel around selling and bargaining wares. And this game comes out of nowhere and not only accomplishes that but also fleshes it out beautifully. NPCs talk to you about the world. They ask you to bring specific items you may find on your travels. There's political stuff going on. There's COMBAT, something I never imagined I wanted in the game I was looking for but is actually a novel way to do it in this one. You want to relax with a cup of coffee/tea, some sweet bread and lose yourself in a very big world? Get this game. Will buy the devs a Cup of Kindness when I can so they know I am EAGER for them to continue this beautiful game.

It's not quite like anything else I've ever played, but boy does it scratch an itch I didn't know I had. If you like exploration, wandering and emergent role play, but dislike games that force high stakes or grinding combat to progress, then you'll love this. It's my go to 'snuggle up in bed with a cup of tea on a rainy day' game.

Beautiful game and the most unique MMOish game I've ever played. Highly recommend for someone looking for: A chill game. An exploration game. A game with style out the ass. It definitely still has great challenges and "farming" if you are into that for an MMO style game as well. It just requires a lot of game knowledge to know how or where to do those things.
