I love this game. Difficult, depressing, and yet ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT. All it needs now is obscure lore for me to rant about.

In a time when we're fed so many shallow attempts to cash in on nostalgia this game stands as a triumph in paying homage without feeling patronizing. A creative blend of retro aesthetics and contemporary design that seduces you with addictive combat and surprises with every level. I don't expect to ever uninstall it.

A lot of heart in just a few pixels. Twelve maps with ten levels each filled with deadly encounters, gorgeous scenery, and sick beats. Cannot recommend this one enough. Gem of a game.

This game is amazing overall. I love what it has to offer in terms of combat and simple yet effective artstyle, plus the stage progression that dictates how the game moves forward like a retro console game. It's not too complicated in its mechanics and it feels so good to jump right into a stage, parry enemies, and counterattack them afterwards to wipe the floor with the whole stage. It offers a significant challenge at certain points, so if you're not careful, you can find yourself stuck on one stage and not be able to progress due to a loss of extra items and EXP upon death, but the game allows you one chance to get them back, kinda like Dark Souls. Speaking of Dark Souls, the dodging feels great, especially right after you've hit an enemy and need to avoid its next attack. Some enemies cannot be parried and must be dodged in order to avoid its attacks. Some enemies are more effectively killed if you block/parry its attacks (That's how I was able to clear the swamp and catacombs). One enemy in particular (the ghost) requires you to charge up an attack in order to kill. The variety in the game's bestiary allows for a varied combat experience and keeps the gameplay really engaging. If you need to learn the controls, the game offers a tutorial for beginners, which is great. The item and EXP system relies on clearing a stage to obtain experience for leveling up your character and a random chance at finding an item, which can be put in one of two inventory slots available. Some items are consumable and the stat boosts they offer will last one stage, or they can heal you for some much-needed health, but if you level up or go to the next stage, you get healed anyways. If you die on a stage, you lose all items and EXP you currently have and must retry the stage in order to get them back, otherwise you lose them for good, but at least you can still keep your stage progress within the world. For every world, there is a boss at the end, which offers a significant challenge and is themed after the world it is in, and many of them play differently. One world in particular centers around horseback combat with Wargs and Centaurs chasing after you and ends in a big fight against a giant Warg. Different worlds will offer unique hazards for you to deal with, such as the swinging axes found in the dungeon or the billowing flames found all over the Aryndale Village, but thankfully many of these hazards can also hurt enemies, so use them to your advantage. If you're a fan of Dark Souls and old-fashioned arcade games or old console games, this title is certainly for you. I hope this kind of game gets expanded upon, such as continuous levels to traverse and explore instead of one stationary stage where all the enemies come in from the sides, maybe an expanded inventory to pick and choose items from instead of only having two slots, or perhaps an expanded arsenal of weapons to shake up the combat even further. This game is great on its own, but a sequel has the potential to make the formula even better.
