The game gets a bit homogeneous clearing the islands, but makes up for it with a good feeling of gradual progress and an interesting narrative. I liked exploring the islands and learning about the world. I do wish airship combat had a greater role in the game. With exception to a few encounters; it serves mostly as a vehicle to grounded combat. Though there is still enough there to chew on, and fits into the game well.

Its a fine game, but really nothing spectacular. Don't get it for the story, as its you typical run of the mill story. Its the common trope of "main character starts off small and builds themselves up, saves and serves the community, everyone's grateful, doesn't fall for the temptation of power and saves the world by sacrificing themselves, The End" Don't get it for the variety in content, as you really do see most of what the games about in the first few hours. Liberate island, upgrade gear, move onto next island, repeat. It does introduce new content in the latter half of the game though. Don't get it for the puzzle aspect, as a primary school kid could solve these puzzles with ease and even if you can't get it, it is very easy to guess and check. And don't get it for the graphics, as it really is just like every other pixel graphics game (unless that's your thing). It does have some saving graces though. The environment is very well done and the mechanics fit well into it. The hook mechanic, where you can pull yourself to the nearest obstacle, works well with the island aspect of the game, as you can essentially parkour from one small island to the next, which is quite satisfying. The airships you drive feels fluid and well done and definitely contributes to the overall theme and environment of the game. Although the weapons aren't all dramatically different, the designs are all original and there is over 200 different attachments you can put on your weapons, which is nice to make the perfect weapon look, although mind you it is only stat changes they give you, nothing drastic. Overall, I'd give this one a pass or get it on sale.

it's okay. it's nothing innovative or groundbreaking. it's a top down shooter, a bit like gta 2, but in a steampunk enveloppe, with some platforming, which can be bypassed by accident. i dont understand why the passive income mechanic that was present pre-release was removed (you could grow veggies and pets at the home base, which meant getting more cash for upgrades) nor why the shipbuilding was streamlined (you could build and pick up any combo of parts you wanted, including nerfing some features off to fit more speed and firepower on the smaller hulls) Now using the bigger ships is completely pointless, unless you need the occasional boost in hitpoints for a battle with lots of ennemies. why would you bother with a ship that's 50% slower, less manoeverable, doesnt fit in some areas when you can just TP back to home, dump what isnt needed, TP back close to your area of choice and continue? the smallest and fastest skip was limited to 20 cargo cap, which meant you had to make a choice when going around. now i have 34 cap and i litterally just TP when it's full. from anywhere. getting the bigger hulls only grants a minor hull stash buff... AI is dumb. reaally dumb. unless there's lots of it and you're doing it in hard, it's never really a threat. they also kept the RNG'd weapon parts mechanic, so getting upgrades is just a slow, long drag. there's really no reward in freeing an island to get goodies, and you cant make cosmetic choices. (that would make too much sense imho) the story has been made further and further less impacting. initially you had your familly wiped, now it's an unrelated uncle you talk to twice before he dies. and dad's doing a fallout 3. big bad guy is basically nonexistent and the annoying and badly implemented but necessary mechanic where the islands could be invaded again was removed. so... since i had 3 saves wiped during the developpment of this thing i'm going to finish it and be done with it.

Nice little underrated top-down open world ARPG that leads the player on an adventure across a vast open sky littered with settled and unsettled islands, featured in a nice pixel art graphic style. So as the player, what exactly do you get to do in this open world? [*]Constructing buildings for crafting, upgrades and gear. [*]Buying and retrofitting different skyships. [*]Acquiring different guns and weapons to enhance your offensive arsenal. [*]Scouring islands for loot and resources to harvest. [*]Completing puzzles to gain access to blocked areas on floating islands. [*]Providing assistance to stranded NPCs. [*]Navigating enemy minefields. [*]Engaging in a variety of boss fights on land and in air. [*]Discovering and exterminating an alien threat. I think my favorite part of the game was baiting enemies to the edges of islands so I could shell them with my overpowered ship guns. Obviously couldn't do that for all enemies on each island, but it still felt good when doing it on some of the islands that were a bit too high level for my ground equipment. Overall it's a great game, and I hope there's a sequel in the works.

I prefered the pre-release version as it had a lot more customization when it came to the ships, but the full release is not bad either. The release version simplified things a LOT, but I think that's fine. The story changes so far were pretty considerable and made me get engaged into the story once again. I still prefer the old ship customization but apart from that the game is great. And knowing we can always swap between versions (with different saves) makes a big difference since I can always go back and play it if I feel like it. I still prefer being able to shoot a massive kamehameha from my ship though...
