One of my favorite games of all time. Criminally underrated. I played this game at the very beginning of the covid pandemic. It is simply dripping in atmosphere and was the perfect game for me to get lost in at that time. If you go into it expecting it to be something it's not, you will likely be disappointed. But if you approach it like I did, with an open mind towards adventure and challenge, and the singleminded goal of going as far down as you can each run, you will find this game is a diamond in the rough!! [This is my second copy, I bought this copy just to support the devs and give a review.]
Just wanted to give a somewhat early review even though I'm not super far into the game. I was a little hesitant coming into this game given the reviews but so far I absolutely love it. Absolutely no hand holding which I'm appreciating more and more with games, very little explanations, and a lot of trial and error. It's a little like Tunic set in a dark world with less puzzles and more just about exploring. I also feel like the game is missing a roguelite tag, as you will die and have to start from the beginning but can unlock shortcuts and what equates to temporary fast travel points. Definitely not for everyone, but if you like a good atmosphere, enjoy figuring things out on your own, and don't mind the semi-roguelite nature I think you will love this. Edit: just completed this. Everything I said still stands. Something to note though - you need to be meticulous with moving through the floors and search every nook and cranny in order to beat the game. There is also one section you have to go through multiple times with an enemy that continuously attacks unless you have enough of a certain resource to continue to hold it at bay. About the only thing that I really didn't like about the game is the artificial padding with backtracking. I think I spent about 2 hours at least having to go through the same sections.
I played the whole thing in explore mode because I am not a masochist and it's still plenty difficult. It was really fun until I got to the lower floors and then my enjoyment tapered off pretty rapidly. Not only did it begin to feel unfair but also it started to stutter and crash right when I needed it to definitely not do that. It felt like it shifted genres to horror, something I'm not a fan of. I still got through all that and I still definitely recommend the game. The atmosphere, the mystery and the sense of scale and dread in this game are top notch.
It's a good game, besides one major gripe (see below). It requires patience but the sense of mystery is near unmatched. There's not really a story, but the world feels very real. Soundtrack and art direction (besides gripe, see below) are incredible. If you like Rain World, this game is for you. Spoilers: The ending sucks. Not the final levels, I enjoyed those, just the very end. It's a really bad cutscene, both visually and narratively, that's out of place and extremely edgy. It takes away from what little story there is, undermining the whole adventure. It's one step above "it was all a dream". The fact that it's not at the very least an in-game cutscene is ridiculous - the pre-rendered visuals are by far worse than the in-game ones. It feels like it was written by someone's 12 year old son and tacked on in the last month of development. Overall, I recommend Below, but this cutscene has single-handedly prevented me from wanting to replay the game. 6/10, 8.5 without ending
