May 2026
I bought this game because I expected a stupid novelty game. You know, bear runs around, Nazis panic, maybe five minutes of entertainment. That is not what I got. What I got was a cold, miserable little logistics simulator about morale, bad planning, and the long-term consequences of annoying a Russian bear. You play as a bear. The game never explains this. Nobody comments on it. There is no intro cutscene where a scientist says, “My God, we have made him too patriotic.” You are just a bear, and everyone acts like this is normal. In fairness, by Stalingrad standards, it probably is. The game’s best decision is that it doesn’t wink at the premise. It takes the bear seriously. Too seriously, maybe. It asks you to accept the burden of bearhood and then drops you into a frozen ruined city full of armed men who have somehow failed to prepare for claws. The setting is bleak as hell. Snow falls constantly. Not in a pretty way either. It feels less like atmosphere and more like the weather personally wants you dead. The Nazis have guns, numbers, and uniforms. Unfortunately for them, none of these things are especially helpful when the opposing force is a large mammal with no ammo requirements and very poor respect for military doctrine. Combat is slow, awkward, and weirdly stressful. You don’t sprint around like some action hero. You lumber. You commit. Every fight feels like a bad decision made slightly too late. Do you swipe? Charge? Back away and hope the enemy has an emotional breakdown? Sometimes the correct tactic is honestly just standing there and letting the situation become their problem. The game does punish stupidity. Rush in and you die. Wait too long and you freeze. Get stuck on rubble and, well, you are a bear in rubble. That feels less like a bug and more like the game making a point. There’s basically no story in the usual sense. No voice acting, as far as I could tell. I played it on my work PC without speakers, so maybe the bear delivers a moving monologue and I missed it. There are no big cutscenes either. The story is mostly frozen footprints, abandoned weapons, and the slow realization that “standard tactics” do not include a chapter on bear. The controls are sometimes clumsy. The animations are stiff. Pathfinding has moments where it appears to be negotiating with itself. But honestly, it kind of fits. War is messy. Ruins are annoying. Plans do not survive contact with a 300 kg furry variable. This is not a power fantasy. At first you think it might be. You’re a bear. That should count for something. But no. The enemy is too many, the cold is too much, and eventually the whole thing becomes a bleak joke about endurance. You don’t win because you’re strong. You don’t really win at all. You just keep going until the game reminds you that being a bear is not enough to fix history. A strangely serious, frostbitten, occasionally broken game about war, stubbornness, and the limits of excellent posture. Recommended for anyone who wants historical realism, environmental storytelling, and the educational experience of discovering that even a very committed bear can still lose.
