This game has really good promise, similar to how Roboquest was when it first released into early access about four years ago. People like to compare it to the current version of Roboquest, after four years of development. I can see why, both games are very similar. Though I don't think the comparison is quite fair as this game JUST saw its release. I feel like people are forgetting where Roboquest, even Hellfire Reborn, began -- a really good concept and solid shooter with a lack in both content and roguelike elements. Over time both those games grew to be even better than when they launched and I'm sure this game will follow that trend. This game is a really good concept that feels like a fun Megaman FPS. Sure there are improvements they could make today that would immediately make this game better, movement particularly. This game will do even better after its inevitable updates, and I am excited to see what they come up with.

Battle Shapers is a singleplayer roguelite first-person-shooter. TLDR: I have enjoyed the majority of my time with the game, but now at the cusp of 20 hours it has become somewhat boring. I recommend picking it up on Sale if you are interested. Two of my biggest complaints are around Performance and Gun/Ability Variety, which are being addressed in the upcoming 1.0 release. Two complaints that appear to be unaddressed in the 1.0 release are Time Commitment and Map Variety. Full runs can run up to approximately 2 hours and feels bad, especially when you see the same Maps, Rooms, Puzzles, and Challenges on repeat. Aesthetically, it feels like Megaman in an abandoned post-human city. It's a beautiful game, the characters, enemies and bosses are well designed. However, there appears to be no variation to the Rooms and Puzzles you encounter, you will see the same things over time. Same for the enemy types. Performance, I struggle to play on anything but Low with an Nvidia RTX 3060. Even on Low, when the number of enemies increase the frames drop and the particle effects are noisy. Version 1.0 is dropping after this review and they've stated improvements are coming. Base Mechanics. Movement and shooting feel good, snappy and responsive. You have a big ass arm that can punch enemies into terrain and each other, in addition to modifications you get from the Shaper Cores, which is satisfying. You also have 3 elemental weapon/ability types to play with, Fire, Shock and Vibration, which have basic effects and additional at max stacks. They're fun to play with, but hard to specifically dive into outside of the random rewards that you obtain. In the 1.0 version, they're introducing a mechanic to suppress/encourage specific weapons and abilities to appear in runs. Roguelite Mechanics. Meta-progression is a Grind. Both to unlock weapons and abilities, but also gain access to the Shaper Cores that really change your playstyle. Additionally, full runs can take up to 2 hours or more. You will fight each boss and liberate their respective towers before facing the final boss, and there have been multiple times where I need to pause or take a break. My advice for the developers would be to cut the run time.

This game is honestly a blast. The movement is interesting, the core abilities are fun and unique, the core enhancements are a nice touch, and the weapons are honestly very cool (especially the vibro ones). I like the way the elemental effects work and I love how eventually you can take modifiers off of other weapons and place it on another. If you're lucky enough to find the right ones you can steamroll a game easily. It has replayability up to a certain point and honestly is a good rougelite to kind of wind down playing. The graphics look clean and the overall environments are bright and colorful. The bosses are a struggle but you don't feel absolutely hopeless facing them. I think the game gives you enough of a challenge to keep you on your toes. You have to pay attention to opportunities to replenish your shields and you always have to keep moving. Easily comparable with Roboquest and Gunfire as well as DOOM-like mechanics and a bit of a Mega-Man feel. With all this being said and although I do heavily recommend this game it has its issues: Some Cons: *Loading time between levels is long and kind of annoying sometimes *Some of the weapons don't really feel great to use even when you use them right and lack power where there otherwise should be good amounts of it (the Accelerator, Infernal Stinger, Stormcaller, and Splitshot Kunai) *The trap rooms are a bit mundane and lack challenge as well as some of the teleportation challenges not being so challenging (with exception of the take no damage challenge) *The rarity of the weapon only effects the modifier it comes with, not the weapon itself (I feel as though the rarity would matter more if it effected the weapons stats) *Once unlocking enough things using the purple currency the game becomes an ungodly amounts of easy (which might be a pro to some people) *Punching things that are flying (ex: Drones and arbiters) are wonky and you'll miss them half the time even when you're looking directly at them Some things that I wish were in the game: *Difficulty settings. As in being able to change the game from easy to hard and even allowing newer and harder difficulties after beating the game *More element types. I feel like adding ice, wind, or corruption as an element could make the game very interesting. *More bosses to choose from. You would still only have to defeat three but more bosses and more cores to choose from would definitely be cool and make the game that much more replayable *A shop to buy weapon modifications with Huck and Haul With all this being said, um, play the game :)

If you like Roboquest or Deadlink, this game may be for you. This game is sooo close to being good, but I don't reccomend buying it right now, but it's still in early access and I do like it so I'll reccomend this game. I'd say 6.5/10 right now because there are quite a few performance issues and general bugs. I use a decked out Razerblade 17, but I still can't get this game to perform well. The gameplay feels fun, but even after less than 7 hours for me it began to feel repetitive. Something about the combat just doesn't feel 'right' either, the guns and punches feel really weak, and the enemies just generally feel really stupid. Also I know there's the whole Sweet Baby Inc thing going on, but this game isn't really impacted too much by the company I feel. Overall, I'd say wait until the release to buy it, but keep it on your radar for sure!
