hit too close to home, especially today. how many times has my father killed me? i'm living a loop. my dad is a bad person too. as much as i try to deny it; as loops keep happening. enough about me. excellent art direction storytelling and atmosphere, please keep doing games.

It's a rare type of horror when sadness is more prevalent than scares. I can also now fully understand why it isn't called 'Good Parenting'. It's only about 30 minutes long and by the time the credits roll, it pairs well with staring at an empty wall while slowly blinking. The real Mr Red Face was the angry dads we made along the way.

Two weeks before this game was released in Turkey, a girl named Narin had gone missing. She was murdered by her own family (according to some theories, as part of a ritual). When the game was released, it didn't reach a large audience in Turkey, but it caused significant sorrow among those who did play it. It is unacceptable for a child to fear their own parents and to be killed by them. And every time I see this game, I feel a deep sadness. Play this game, have others play it, and raise awareness among people.

Day 12 of the October Horror Reviews: Bad Parenting 1: Mr. Red Face Offering a devastating insight into domestic abuse that leads to horrific tragedy, the game doesn't exactly play with its cards close to its chest. Some have suggested the metaphors are a tad obvious, but overtly complex metaphor does not an intelligent work make. Sometimes, a lack of subtlety actually works in the game's favour. This is one of those games, especially with how short it is. The graphics aren't spectacular, but they feel like they contribute to the unsettling nature of the game. No particularly warm colours, everything feels very enclosed, and tight. There are some cheap jumps, but they also feel quite earned in a way; slowly forcing you to feel more and more vulnerable, as if something very wrong is happening here. Sound design is also interesting, and while minimalist, feels very useful for the form. It's not a perfect game, none of the games I've reviewed so far, are. The simplicity also lends itself to being less intimidating, and can feel sometimes a little uncertain of itself, but that's the beauty of the dichotomy between it being uncomfortable and a little silly - there are arguments to be made whether a story like this really is told all that respectfully, but I personally had no issue with it. The concept overall works for what it is, and I genuinely think it's earned its stripes so far. 7/10.
