Over 1000 hours into this should tell you something. Great game. Only thing i wish it had, would be better AI. They use pretty much the same strategy each game. I understand the game is meant for online play and the solo is more for learning the game, but some of us don't like people. HAHA Like i said, this is the best A&A game out there on PC

I've played this game for over 2,500 hours and can say that it may be the most cost-effective online game. For $8.99 you get a no subscription licensed asynchronous turn-based game that has a robust player base. The game is balanced using tournament rules (Gencon 3.0) and you have a choice of competing for rank on the ladder, or playing custom games in Discord tournaments, or playing custom games with your friends. There is a community of players with some going back decades to the days of the board game in the 80's. But with this online version, games can be played more often and more rapidly, which has resulted in innovation in strategy. Elite players are well known and are generous with their knowledge in helping lower ranked players. The game intentionally omits online chat to avoid toxicity so there is no need to feel apprehensive entering games. But you can make friends with players after a match and you can chat with your friends using Discord or Steam. The game is not exactly like the board game in that you can't land fighters on allied carriers and you can't load allied land units onto transports. But this is a good thing because the Allies would be overpowered with these rules. Generally, the Axis dominates in the lower ranks, but in the highest ranks the Allies are favored to the point where players bid for Allies in Discord tournaments. The matchmaker pairs you with other players at your skill level, so average players like me are at the level where the two factions are evenly matched. There has been criticism of the dice, but the developers have proven that the RNG is fair. It's human nature to only remember the bad dice rolls, and to assume that good dice results were because of strategic decision making. Anyone with experience shooting craps know that there are hot and cold streaks when rolling dice. If you enjoy games like chess or risk and you have some interest in WWII history, then this is the game for you. You can test your strategy against the best Axis & Allies players in the world online. This game was developed as a passion project, so there are no money-making schemes in this game. You pay your one-time fee for each device (computer, tablet or phone), and you get unlimited play time.

When I first read the reviews before playing this game, I got the impression it had a lot of bugs and some game decisions like not being able to pick losses as defender was terrible game design. I decided to try it out anyways and have now spend about 140 hours on it. This game is actually very playable and very enjoyable. Yes there are some bugs that will make the game crash and they are easily reproducible, so as a software developer my self, I can't understand why it hasn't been fixed as it would take less than a day to fix most of them, so minor are they. The bugs has to due with the developers not considering that state can change since initialization. When you watch other peoples battles, there is a button to close the battle. If you press that, the game will crash with a null exception, when it tries to close the battle window itself, since you already closed it. Work around is to not click that button but wait for the game to close it automatically. If you open an online game with the intention of joining it and it is deleted, started or state is changed so you can no longer access it, the game crashes with an exception that you do not have rights for that game. Again not a big deal. All the bugs I have seen so far in the game follows the same pattern and are easily fixable. Here is why it doesn't matter much to your game experience: Every move you make is sent as an event to the game server, so it is stored and will not be lost when the game crashes. When it crashes it restarts and continues automatically and since you learn what not to do after some time and there are workarounds it's a non-issue. The complaint that defenders can not pick their losses is actually a good game decision. The game is designed such that you do not have to stay online for hours and hours waiting for your opponents to take their turn, which is a great thing, so you can have a real life while playing it. When it is your turn, you usually have 48 hours to finish your turn before you get kicked. You get a warning after 24 hours. (Length and other rules are configurable pr game). Imagine if when you took your turn and had 5 battles, which could each have several rounds you had to wait for your opponent to log on and pick losses each time... The game would not be playable. To work around this you can choose a defense profile, where you set up which kind of units should be taken first as casualties in certain situations. It is not perfect, but it is the best solution given that you would like to complete your whole turn without any waiting. All in all I really enjoy playing this game online against other players. The AI is really really bad, so unless you are completely new to this kind of game, you want to play against other players of which there are plenty to match with using the games online part. If you like playing Axis and Alies the board game, then this is definitely worth your money.

The AI is way too easy, it never retreats during an attack even if it is almost guaranteed to lose, even if there are no ground units anymore to actually take the region. The AI has no settings to adjust its planning strength, its just one setting, dull IMHO. This game is incredibly buggy, the anti aircraft guns shoot down your planes over industrial facilities when you bomb them, even when there are NO AA guns in the province. Additionally AA guns don't fire correctly when its just a normal battle. So many bugs. Also when was the last time you couldn't chat with an opponent in a game you were playing with them? I think sometime in the 90s, but yes you cannot talk to your opponents AT ALL while playing. As an AI developer for multiple video games, I'd like to help out. PM me Beamdog and I'll send my resume.

I used to play the classic 1942 game with my 2 brothers many years ago and those were epic and long battles that would sometimes go for days. We even had, at times, to take a picture of the board to accommodate for time constraints or to move the board. The three of us got the game for Christmas and have started playing again, getting re-acquainted with the game, the rules, the units, the strategies... It's so much fun and we don't even have to worry about placement of units, movement and attack limit rules, fuel, dice hitting game pieces, etc. Really enjoyable and challenging as always. The control interface takes some time to get used to though but, just as with any change, if you embrace it, stay the course, and practice the everything becomes second nature. We, the 3 brothers, are truly enjoying A&A Online for what it is and what it represents to us as a space to share, have fun, and talk in the midst of WWII. Recommended!
