This is a simple, single player, story focused, turn based RPG. The graphics are simple and utilitarian. The story is detailed and interesting if you pay attention. Take the time to read the quests and meander through the world. Choices matter in inconspicuous ways. Good luck.

An excelent RPG classic with good story. Intuitive gameplay, well thought out magic and combat system. No excess of loot and items - and only a handfull of epic items. Enjoyed all three END quests, each od them a different challange. For my liking a 9/10 RPG game. Dont mind the graphics, remember its fantasy, so imagine and use your creative mind ;)

If you enjoy Jules Verne, then you'd enjoy Avernum: Escape from the Pit. I've always wanted a game that replicates the world of "Journey to the centre of the earth". This game's setting gives me that same feeling. I loved the exploration. Despite recommending this game, there is one major flaw. The writing is often superfluous. It's basically an eyesore (even when using the largest font option). The huge bodies of text could have been cut into a few succinct sentences. My eyes are tired enough from work, I could use some rest with less text from a game that (obviously) has no voice acting. The combat gets repetitive. The side quests are often not very interesting, with irrelevant characters that don't really matter. Actually, the NPCs are often uncannily similar to one another. With such a story-focused game it's really important for the characters to be well written. Alas, it plays more like a puzzle game -- basically you have to get certain things to progress to the next section. I have a feeling that the author was simply too ambitious. The biggest bummer by far was the fact that your 'choices' aren't consequential. Whether you choose to help the free fort, the Empire agent, join the scimitars, or stay loyal to Micah's servants, the endings are the same. You won't even really affect in game events or character dialogues. I murdered the entire bandit city (forgot the name, but the leader attacked me after I told her I stole her stuff). Well, nothing changes. No one even hears of it and I still had an unfinished quest that required the city to stay standing!

Spiderweb Software has been a part of my gaming life since 2005, and it's amazing to see them still keep going and release quality games even to this day. Avernum - Escape from the Pit (remastered version of Avernum 1) has its own unique lore, spells and rules that seperates itself from other well-known RPGs, and is a good starting point if you're looking for a different veteran RPG experience. This re-remake of Exile, the classic mid 90s shareware RPG that was easily on par with big games at the time like Ultima... it has it all. It immediately warps you back to the mid 90s. The isometric gameplay is crisp and snappy. The interface has no secrets. It is peak WYSIWYG, and needs little explanation as you start adventuring. The game is massive. Exploring the larger over(under?)world map or any of the towns and dungeons as they gradually reveal themselves is a bit of a lost art form. This game does it perfectly. It somehow feels modern, standing next to something like Shadowrun, but also feels like something you'd be ordering from a catalog in 1995 via snailmail. It's a very atmospheric. The series always had that going for it, and it was not lost in this version. Exploring the world below the world, uncovering the detailed social structures that have formed from all the other exiles, and fighting different monster tribes is an interesting and rewarding time. The overall adventure complete with the side-quests available in towns, caves, towers, etc. gives you plenty to do, and you really are generally able to just... go. You aren't hand held. You just go. Start walking. Get a boat. Sail around. Find a cave? Go see what's there. Died? Don't go there for a bit. Explore elsewhere. There is always something to find. There's always some little switch or dirt pile you missed that you can get later. The character system is as classic as it gets, allowing you to customize your characters for various melee, missile, and magical playstyles. The adventuring skills and traits also give a nice tabletop RPG vibe as you need to make sure your party is competent enough to deal with adventuring perils/secrets (cave lore), or be able to read magical scripts found in crypts (arcane lore). This gives you a great deal of depth without being clunky, overwhelming, or unbalanced. The battles are also so tabletop RPG style it's nuts. It really feels like these games are spiritual successors to the AD&D Goldbox series with the way the grid-based fights play out. Maneuvering your wizards to shoot cones of lightning around, or strategically knocking enemies back is a really satisfying time. The battle system is simple, effective, and most of all, fun. The games addicting. It gives you that "just a little bit more exploring" itch in your brain that you will be forever scratching. 10/10. Buy this game, and all the other Spiderweb Software games.
