this is a tough game to review ngl. i loved it, but i can see why so many people are turned off from it because the writing in the beginning is very VERY hit-or-miss. I found it funny most of the time, but sometimes i really wanted to roll my eyes out of my head. (Thunder Goober I love you but I'm also happy that I didn't save after I got IBS) if you don't like the style of humor it goes for, you probably won't like any of the humor, to be honest. but it gets better and better as the game goes on, both the funny parts and serious parts. the ending I got (basically the equivalent of true pacifist i think) was really, Really good. hit me right in the heart, right where it hurts. a lot of the ending is going to stick with me for a while. gameplay-wise, the battle system is like undertale everyone's already said that. i love how creative the attacks get, and the various ways you can interact with enemies (especially bosses) are all super unique. but it also feels so very, very wonky. in almost every battle, I felt like my hitbox was too big. some attacks feel undodgeable. there's a reason bullet hell games have small hitboxes, and I feel like this game just kinda messed up that part. chill mode makes things easier, yes, but it doesn't solve the underlying issue. also i never used it because i love suffering, apparently. I'm very mixed on the game. but overall, I recommend it - when the writing hits, it REALLY hits, its a great game, but I feel like it could be so much better. anyway, i would do anything for james.

TLDR: Quirky RPG that's very heavily inspired by Undertale. Can save/kill/recruit characters with bullet hell like gameplay. Very colorful, fun, and silly for what it is. I recommend it. The main thing you'll see a lot of reviews writing about is that this is very much like Undertale. It definitely shares a lot of similarities with it. Some will say it rips it off, though others (like me) would probably just say it's more heavily inspired by that game. I think it does enough different things to say that. You play a kid going on an adventure (or rhapsody as this game prefers it) and get into silly antics with various characters. You'll get to choose to save (and recruit) or kill each one and that's supposed to change things up. As this is definitely inspired by Undertale, I think trying to compare what the two games do differently/the same is fair game. AR went more for the silly writing as opposed to the meta horror stuff you see towards the end in undertale. You can recruit party members who each have their own unique abilities that either provide buffs, debuffs, damage, or do nothing lol. This recruitment aspect actually made it feel a bit like Pokemon since there are 16 characters to collect and the game does feel like it's all about your meetings with these characters. These encounters can range anywhere from 5 min to 40 min for each character. They always end with a fight against the character. The gameplay is mostly that of a bullet hell, but it gets varied with other minigames thrown into the loop (e.g. a basketball minigame, rhythm game, quiz, etc.). The animations and sprites feel very animated, so that that makes the game feel more alive. The story's and characters are all very silly and fun. It's got undertales humor, so that's what you can expect. PROS: +Very animated sprites/animations that make everything feel alive +Varied combat with the ability to alter the bullet hell you're playing and different minigames +Different NPCs that provide silly antics in the story as well as different skills in combat +Good tunes +Funny creatures/story CONS: -A lot of party members feel underdeveloped since some of their encounters are essentially just 5 min as opposed to others who get a ton of screen time. Wish the screentime for each party member was more equal. -The games not hard, but your hitbox does feel a bit too big sometimes for what this is. Feels like a lot of bullets tag you no matter what. -A LOT of bosses in the game end their fights within a certain amount of turns, so it almost feels like you never really get to have a true fight with them. This should've been used more sparingly tbh. There's some caveats, but I really liked the game. I did a pacifist route, so I can't really speak on behalf of how it is when you kill everyone. Supposedly it's mostly the same. It's not exactly like it, but this might scratch that undertale itch one could have. There's a lot of content and silliness that I think makes this game worth checking out for anyone that wants a quirky RPG.

Imagine a game that is inspired by Undertale, while clearly being it's own thing, and also doesn't shame you for killing people who literally tried to kill a child. Very funny, has a surprisingly chill outlook, and has a rabbit cowboy who strums a guitar and is the coolest. Download it now Cornball.

Another quirky indie RPG. Distinguishes itself from its clearest inspiration by having a cast of characters who are mostly unpleasant freaks, who do not necessarily develop out of being unpleasant freaks, that you are nevertheless expected to befriend and come to care about. Works far better than the demo led me to believe, though there are a few misses (Especially evident with Horatio, who I was clearly meant to have more fondness for than I feel like was reasonable given his actions). Some party members also feel extremely underbaked, on account of the fact that they largely cease to be characters once they join you. Not inherently a huge deal, but some of them (Girlcat especially) hardly have any time before they're put into your party and get relegated to dry commentary on the overworld and mid-cutscene interjections that everyone else ignores. Some stuff near the end of the game also seems to act like your party members have any form of dynamic between each other when they absolutely don't- and, look, I can hardly expect this short indie rpg to pull off a proper dynamic between a party of 13, but you can't just pretend like you established something that you never even tried establishing in the first place. Moving away from characters and to moment-to-moment writing, it's also pretty inconsistent. As stated before, dialogue can often feel dry and stunted, and the more down-to-earth a character's personality is, the more trouble Nico seems to have conveying it. Humor-wise, the brand of absurdist comedy on display can be genuinely hilarious, but it falls flat pretty often. At the very least, few gags are dragged out long enough to enter groan-worthy territory. Gameplay and presentation are both very solid. Spritework is a little amateurish but ultimately looks perfectly fine. Character designs are fun and varied. Bullet hell remains engaging throughout in spite of asset re-use. Soundtrack is banging. Not much more to say. Overall, A well-rounded and unique experience that deserves at least a little more than to be chucked into the ever-growing pile of wannabe undertales.

honestly, it wears its inspirations on its sleeve AND tends to be transformative about what it is referencing either with humour or something else really really good plus ACTUALLY very fucking weird
