Serri-chan and Ryza are so cute.... This is my second atelier game after having played Ryza 1! All in all, it was pretty fun experience. This game definitely improved on many aspects from the previous one. However, I still had a few minor qualms with Ryza 2 that weren't big enough to impact my overall view of the game. To kick things off, I believe (in my opinion) one of the biggest improvement from Ryza 1 to 2, was the battle mechanic! Ryza 2 also has an ATB system similar to 1, however this time around, it's more visually appealing, improved how core items worked (CC are generated during battle, addition of Core Drives, etc) and you get to chain attacks when you have enough AP. Previously in Ryza 1, you're forced to decide between using AP to increase your tactics level or using it on skills. In Ryza 2, your tactics level increases when you use your skills. This is little touch makes the battles flow so much better. (Making busted core items early on definitely breaks the game lmao) Next up, exploration! They added swimming, diving, swinging and many more! It really opened up a lot of possible places that Ryza can explore compared to the previous game. Something I really appreciate is the continuity in the sense that, you start off by being able to see marked treasures and enemies and larger basket size. It makes sense narratively as you've already made them in the first game. It could just be the devs trying to simplify exploration and I'm just thinking too deeply into it lmao. Apart from that, the side stories have also significantly been improved. Each of the main cast has their plotline that you can follow to completion (it slightly alters their dialogue in the ending which is pretty cool). There are also other side characters with their own stories that are great as well! Most of the side stories are voiced too, which amplifies the experience. The alchemy part of this game is a mixed bag for me. When adding low quality items into the material loop, it doesn't reduce the overall quality of the product. This makes synthesising 999 quality items very easy. As for the con, you have to insert three of the initial materials to open up the rest of the material loop for the item. This makes it annoying when you want to craft something multiple times. In Ryza 1, you only needed to insert one or two materials minimum to synthesis it. This may be a nitpick, however.. I'm personally not a huge fan of the UI for Ryza 2's alchemy synthesis menu. Compared to Ryza 1's bright-fantasy-adventure-RPG UI, this one just feels dull and boring. The icons for items you haven't morphed or synthesised yet is so small that you can barely see it. Like I said at the start, it's not a huge problem but it was still something that bugged me while I was playing it. Not going too deep into discussing the ending but.. I'm not really sure if it was a bittersweet or a rushed ending. I felt that they had a lot more they could have done with the "exploring ruins and discovering the past" premise. Overall, whether you just finished Atelier Ryza 1 or are thinking of getting into the Atelier Series with Ryza 2 as your entry point, I still recommend it despite its minor flaws!

After playing the first game I was overwhelmingly pressured to continue the trilogy, and this second installment is easily the best of the bunch. While it's not as simple or story-driven as Ryza 1, it's not the jumbled, substance-driven mess that Ryza 3 was, and this game has that perfect balance. It is weak in the story department, however. Credit where it's due, the environment of Ashra-am Baird defines this game and clearly sets itself apart from the others. However, it does feel that this story is too different and it feels as if we never get a proper reintroduction of its characters or setting in Ryza 3. It feels too drastic of a change in Ryza's persona, who was developed as that child-like, innocent girl looking to make a difference in her conservative town using alchemy, and in this game she's almost completely different, establishing herself far from home as an actual difference-maker in society. Even if it does deviate from the original idea, it does play with the idea pretty well. AR2 succeeds in the same ways that the first game did, in soundtrack, atmosphere, characters, and pretty much anything you can think of. But where this game completely excels in is its gameplay. I HIGHLY enjoyed the open-ended fun combat of Ryza 2 over the rigid one of Ryza 1 and the confusing style of Ryza 3. Basically, it finds that balance between skill, grinding, and game sense. The actual alchemy mechanics were the best they've ever been and I would be satisfied if it stayed that way through Ryza 3. The dungeon research was perhaps my favorite gimmick of this game, though. I really liked the way the executed it here and I had a lot of fun playing around with it. There's a lot to like about the gameplay, but I won't spoil it all. All in all, this game was well-made. It is not perfect, and it shouldn't be, but I do like the direction this game took. I do wish that there was a bit more of a connection to the other two games and a bit of story refining, but these continuity flaws don't bring down how great this game is. The gameplay is enjoyable, and that's all that matters in the end. To put it in simpler terms: it makes the best of both worlds.

If you played and enjoyed Atelier Ryza 1, this is more of the same but with better character development and some slight twists to progression. It's still a very casual-friendly game, but will certainly require some outside help to figure out where to get crafting ingredients because the in-game guide leaves much to be desired. Overall this is still a fun "turn your brain off" RPG in a cute and wholesome world if you're into that.

One of the best crafting mechanic, battle is fun too. Lightheaded story and likable characters.

While I still think this game was a worthwhile experience, there's so many things I wished it borrow from the first game, as it would have made it way better. This game is too reliant on Tell don't show, and it does it in the most tedious way posible (backtracking ruins is not fun) the game also has mild pacing issues, and the truth is never revealed until the very end, which by that point is already too late of a reveal that ends up on a "oopsie hehe" and the endgame doesn't really last that long. That aside, there were many other things that I found charming, like the new characters, and some returning faces that made it a very charming and endearing experience. Gust music is absolutely based, so there's that too.
