I enjoyed Ayesha's journey to saving her sister! And have witnessed the true ending. Seeing her grow and interact with other characters was heartwarming, and all the characters were great. The alchemy and the turn-based combat were fun too! Ayesha & Wilbell are so cute and funny together. The music and the world were beautifully crafted! Note that this game has a time limit so everything you do must count but it's not too hard.

Atelier Ayesha is my favorite Atelier game, I have played many Gust's games, and I love the Ar Tonelico series; Atelier Ayesha is the game that comes closer to AT than any other. From the themes, music, and characters all gives Ar Tonelico feelings that I don't get in any other atelier game. It also helps that it's a good game overall.

Ayesha is a tough one to recommend, but I'm going to do it anyway because at the end of the day...it's still an enjoyable game. Let's start with the positives! As always the characters in these games are it's lifeblood. Some are more fun to be around than others, yes...but I wouldn't say anyone in this cast is bad. Even grumpy old Keith will grow on you after a bit. This is helped further by Himari's beautiful character design. One of the reasons I even got into this series was because I loved the art in Fire Emblem Echoes. So when I saw they did the art for the Dusk trilogy, I knew I had to at least try it. The music is also on point in this one. You would think a dying world would be full of melancholic tunes and dark themes...and while this game does have those too, it reflect Ayesha's cheerful personality with some upbeat tunes as well. Not to mention the final boss theme...I won't spoil it but when that started playing I had to put down the controller and just...soak it in for a bit. And now for some negatives. This game does a POOR job of explaining its systems to you. I still don't fully understand how to break they synthesis system in this game like I could in every other Atelier, and I wasn't aware that Whetstones and Dyes were a thing until I got absolutely bodied by a story boss I was vastly under-equipped for. I didn't even try to take on any of the post game bosses since I knew my equipment just wasn't going to cut it, and I didn't want to use a guide on my first playthrough. Combat...isn't bad but it's not my favorite the series has done. It's all about positioning until Ayesha can make better bombs that kill everything in one hit. Again...if you ever figure out how with this system. So how about that time limit? At first I got a bit worried. I didn't accomplish much in my first year and focused almost purely on the plot for my 2nd. Needless to say...I was worried for nothing. I managed to beat the boss and clear the goal in about November of my 2nd year...and after that I had way too much time on my hands. It was there that I got a better grasp on synthesis as well as jumped from character event to event. It's not as harsh as the Arland games were as others have said...but it does exist. Final thoughts? I both like and dislike this one in a strange way. Some things like characters and music clicked, while the main draw: the crafting system...was probably my least favorite of the series so far. I'd say give it a try if you liked the other Atelier games...but as far as a entry point goes...maybe try Ryza or Sophie first.

Awesome game, however there is a time limit that you need to be aware of when starting this game, if you don't complete the story by the time the limit is reached you will get an ending (not necessarily a bad ending but an unsatisfying one). If you've played the first Ryza game, I would say this games Alchemy is much more simple than Ryza's, combat is easier as well. Currently as of writing this review there is a bug on the steam deck where the cutscenes that occur throughout the game do not play and instead give a weird error.

"Atelier Ayesha: The Alchemist of Dusk" is a 2012 game that was ported to PC in 2020. However, be aware that despite the page stating the port supports both keyboard and mouse and gamepad, playing without a controller can lead to constant freezes. Therefore, prepare a gamepad or download an emulator. Personally, I used the Vjoy emulator, and it worked well. Atelier Ayesha is a JRPG with a focus on turn-based combat, gathering, and crafting. To get straight to the point, I didn't find the gameplay outstanding. While gathering and crafting are quite addictive, the combat system is generally repetitive. Personally, I started to find it monotonous around the 10-hour mark. As I neared the finale, I increasingly avoided battles with ordinary opponents because the experience and resources gained weren't worth it. Fortunately, the game often allows you to avoid combat, offering choices to fight or not. This feature didn't significantly detract from enjoying the game's other engaging mechanics and charming atmosphere. The world of Atelier Ayesha is set in a fantasy medieval environment with light steampunk elements. The locations are modest, with a limited set of models, giving a nostalgic feel reminiscent of older game designs. Despite not being a high-budget game, it exudes warmth, coziness, magic, and mystery. This effect is achieved through a pleasant color scheme and lovingly designed locations. The atmosphere is further enhanced by the excellent music, which includes OSTs, soundtracks, and endings. Most of the compositions are instrumental, dominated by piano, bells, and string instruments, which are truly captivating. Sometimes, I would stand still in the game just to enjoy the melody. Not every game evokes such emotions, and I even found a whole album of the music on YouTube, which I listen to periodically. Among the game mechanics, time and resource management stand out as particularly engaging. Preparing for new campaigns, crafting bombs and potions, buying supplies and equipment, upgrading gear, tracking deadlines, and balancing major and minor quests became key sources of enjoyment for me. These elements, combined with the enchanting sound design and the charming interactions between characters, kept me motivated until the end. I completed my playthrough in 34 hours, finishing the main story and a few side quests. You can start a NG+ to see a different ending or focus on story and companion quests, many of which are worth exploring. With better time management, it's possible to complete everything in one playthrough, though this is challenging without a guide. In summary, I enjoyed the game. It may not be perfect, but it has its own charm and a unique, unforgettable atmosphere.
