An interesting interactive narrative that successfully moves the player along a storyline from start to finish, as the audience continues along the path of the astrologer to discover if the doomed doctor escapes execution. Characters come and go providing the background for the astrologer's story and engaging the audience, who want to find out how their story ends as well. More movement could have been provided to make the game less static. But all in all, a nice read. Rated 7 out of 10.

Gameplay: 7/10 Graphics & Sound: 9/10 Narration: 10/10 ✔️ Great sense of satyre-based humour. ✔️ Wide range of fun and flawed characters. ✔️ Fun historical references. ✔️ Fully voiced dialogues, and sung (!!!) interludes. 💭 The game isn't really replayable - different choices don't really open up narrative branches as much as they affect your scoring and relationship with characters. Very fun short game I had a blast playing through, I recommend it to anybody! I finished it in 4-5 hours.

Tl;dr: strongly recommended for comedy lovers. Astrologaster is a visual novel set in late Elizabethan England; you play as an astrologer who serves 13 querents who brings a series of hilarious problems to be solved: illness, pregnancy, investment, career opportunities, marriage prospects… In sooth, the events depicted are not only historically relevant to the 1600s, but also poignantly pertinent to our times. This game excels in the following aspects: + Historically accurate and based on true stories. + Characters brought to life by the excellent writing, imbued with archaism and bawdy humour. + Top-notch comedy voice acting of all the dialogues. + A madrigal for each character, recapitulating their story and sung by a marvellous Renaissance-style choir. Prithee take note of the downsides: - If I may discourse frankly, the gameplay loop is rather monotonous. To wit: meet a querent, choose an astrological reading, learn the querent's reaction; rinse and repeat for about 100 times (5-7 times for each of the 14 characters). - Player's choices have few consequences. Forsooth, it only changes a few lines of the dialogues, although perchance a character or two die earlier due to your misguided actions. - No manual save. To know whether its writing style, humour, and minimal gameplay suit you, my dear fellow gamers, pray watch the gameplay video on this Steam Store page (the second one, 4 minutes long). Verily, it portrays a most quintessential consultation with your querent. Mayhap you also seek a more comprehensive overview in order to decide; for that matter, I do advise you to consult [url=https://steamcommunity.com/id/sweenie/recommended/742520/] this writ by a fellow Steam reviewer , or [url=https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/astrologaster-review] this one by Rock Paper Shotgun , or [url=https://www.eurogamer.net/astrologaster-review-an-elizabethan-comedy-for-the-ages] this one by Eurogamer ; the latter two are funny per se. Methinks this game is most pleasant for those who have tastes and proclivities for comedy and/or visual novel games with few consequences of their actions. Coitus post recensionem.

astrologaster is shakespearean gray's anatomy meets monty python. fans of jon richardson's games ([url=https://steamcommunity.com/id/dohi64/recommended/503400/]four last things , etc.) will feel right at home. as a doctor(ish) in 16th-century england, you managed to come up with a remedy for the plague, by way of the most scientific method of all: consulting the stars. strike while the iron is hot, as they say, so might as well cure or otherwise assist ailing querents by making deductions and decisions and mayhap learn something about history in a roundabout way . they'll keep coming back even if you misjudge everything, but as an unlicensed do-gooder, your other goal is to get a medical license if possible based on querent feedback, so try to make an effort. only autosaves without any indication , the weakest aspect of any game, especially one with so many choices. there are more than a dozen characters with intertwined lives, each with about 6 cases . I already blundered the initial consultation with the second one, of course, and seeing as it's about 6 hours , it's not exactly a quick second or third run-through to see alternative, if not necessarily more fruitful, outcomes. still better than 10-hour telltale offerings with unskippable everything. also, negative outcomes aren't necessarily bad and vice versa. looking at the save file, autosaves happen constantly and a case is a bit of dialog followed by a decision, so while not ideal, it's just about forgivable. you need 8 letters of recommendation for the license, which I miraculously managed. I was more curious about providing (and hearing) alternative advice but couldn't be bothered to click through everything else again. stellar laugh-out-loud writing, gorgeous pop-up book visuals, fantastic voice acting and singing narration. separate volumes, subtitles, a couple of resolutions and windowed mode make up the sparse settings, unnecessarily divided into multiple screens but available anytime. pausable and skippable dialog , very considerate and rare, so why in fuck's name would you have unskippable credits ? click it in the main menu, get locked out of doing anything for a while, alt+f4. also, the save gets deleted after completing the game but the only way is forward, so not much point in keeping it. for once, style didn't completely overshadow substance and functionality , like in many other cases, though again, manual saves and multiple save slots, people. there are also a bunch of minor bugs, glitches and typos left. regardless, it's a delightful game absolutely worth experiencing , maybe even more than once.

a short (~5h) comedy game set in Shakespearean times, presented cleverly like a pop-up book. we follow a doctor who relies on astrology to treat people, among them actual historical figures, and solve issues of personal and national importance. you have to make a choice - tell the truth or what someone wants to hear? and bear the consequences? either way, it's funny and completely worth your time. and it's voiced by the Halsin's voice actor in Baldur's Gate 3 Dave Jones??? I didn't even notice and now I have to replay it...
