Full disclaimer: * I have been employed by Ubisoft for ~8 years (Up until 2021) and worked on the Assassin's creed series for most of that (multiple titles from AC 3 to AC Odysey, from quality assurance to level design and technical direction) * I bought this game for 7.49E with my own money in 2015. * This is my personal opinion, and nothing else. Now with that out of the way: Getting 100% was... a return to the ship combat i loved from AC4 but with a layer of empty virtue signaling smeared on top. approximate amount of time to 100%: 10-15 Estimated achievement difficulty: 7/10 Minimum number of playthroughs needed: 1 (probably more than 2) Multiplayer achievements: No. Missable achievements: No. Level select available. Grinding Achievements: YES!. Completionist frustrated me especially DLC-Only achievements: No. Time-gated achievements: No. Speed-run achievements: Yes. 3/12 Missions are Speedrun missions, The rest don't care about speed POint of no return: Each mission has sections where returning for extra stuff is impossible. RNG-achievements: No. Does difficulty affect achievements: Normal, Hard, Very hard. Some achievements require the later. Is there a good guide: I used this one https://www.trueachievements.com/game/Assassins-Creed-Chronicles-China/achievements First achievement unlock: Probably Slide Kill 30~ people ( mission 5 I think) I'm not super sure tho. Unobtainable/glitched achievements: No. But in my case... see below * Notes: * I plugged in my original save from years ago and both steam and Uplay refused to grant me all the achievements. Some esteamed ex-coleague of mine decided to put the achievement unlock code on "Do X" not on "check if X is done" So now having collected all the Fragments and all the chests I found myself with none to collect. So I had to start the whole game again. ...yay. * Mission select is available as well as frequent checkpoints (if you see a mission status you don't like simply reload checkpoint quickly). * The game tells you the score you get but it fails to tell you on what difficulty you got it (each dif. has a different max score) And it also refuses to tell you the max score on the Level select screen, Instead telling you this only at the end of each level... so prepare for many many retries. Infact here, since the very hard scores are nowhere to be found i'm providing them from my own research.. (and yes they require perfect stealth, no kills, and ALL side objectives) Mission 1:2300 Mission 2:2740 Mission 3:2940 Mission 4:2600 Mission 6:1660 Mission 7:2000 Mission 8:1780 Mission 9:3300 Mission 11:3140 5 10 and 12 are speed run missions but the times are the same. So yeah, this game doesn't use the standard assassin's creed engine, and it shows. There are a few bugs and inconsistency (notably the enemies not being predictable when the lures are used) But overall it's been quite stable. A decent options menu and a moderate amount of quality of life. You can see this is basically an indie game that "bought the AC franchise" .. and I mean that in a good way. The story is not the focus of the game but it's nothing to write home about. I also consider that this game is not overly-woke, nothing breaks the suspension of disbelief. In my book the game scores above 51% despite the grind... I'll recommend it.

Yet another game that has so much potential--at least for what it was intended to be--only to be full of disappointment and shortsightedness. Assassin's Creed Chronicles: China is a very entertaining story, despite how short it is in length, dialogue, and even text in the database files--although this is all to be expected, considering the Chronicles trilogy were initially released on the PlayStation Vita. They are very contained narratives, so you aren't missing out by avoiding them, however they do offer much in the way of the expanded universe of Assassin's Creed. For example, with this game in particular, it does continue the story of Shao Jun after her return to China following her training under Ezio (see Assassin's Creed Embers for the introduction.) Shao Jun has a very unique style of combat and assassinations, making her a welcome change to the formula we've come to expect with the main game Assassins--that is, until Odyssey and Valhalla. The gameplay is mostly fun, and rewards stealth as well as efficiency. Although I haven't searched online, I have no doubt it would make for a good or at least an introductory speed runner's game, as it can be thrilling to see how far you can get with golden ranks without surrendering your speed at completing each sequence. Yes, it scores you as you play--per section, to be exact--and even records your style based on how stealthy or how combative your play-style is per section passed. This is different for the franchise, which usually focuses on synchronization, however it is neither unwelcome nor out of place. Without a modern day, synchronization makes little sense without an Animus. Instead, your "challenges" are trying to get through each section through "ghosting", or remaining completed undetected and even exclusively killing your primary targets. It all sounds great, does it not? So where are the problems, you might ask. To put it simply, the game can decide--upon reloading a checkpoint--that a collectible or secondary objective you've obtained/completed has been undone. This means you have to exit to the main menu, and restart the chapter. It can be very tedious, and the process is just a tad longer than it needs to be; they easily could have offered a level restart with the "reload checkpoint" option. The key placements are also a little awkward, but again, the game was meant for the PSVita, not a keyboard and mouse. That being said, the keybindings can only be modified from the main menu, and not the pause screen--as many, if not most other games on or ported to PC allow. Just something to consider. Although I may give this game an overall thumbs up, it's certainly not for everybody. Especially it being a side-scroller intended for a handheld and not a mouse and keyboard. The choice of keybindings is simply stupid, and inconvenient to adjust to what you find works best for you. So maybe a thumbs down for the PC version, specifically.

Better than I expected. I am a > 40 old man who still loves playing game. I now learn things slower than I was and find myself prefer simpler game. This is the one that fits current me. there is no complex and fancy system that you need to remember and get used to. just hide and manage to kill. Not very satisfying but still quite funny. Recommended!

A more stealth focused Assassin's Creed game where you are expected to be undetected and not killing anyone aside from your targets. Very challenging and requires patience if you want to get the highest score in a level

This is the 1st game in the Assassin's Creed Chronicles series, a side-scrolling platformer. Among the three installments, it has the easiest difficulty level. The ink wash painting-like presentation, likely influenced by its Chinese setting, is outstanding. However, perhaps because it is the earliest of the three, the background feels somewhat empty compared to the other two installments.
