The first Assassin's Creed is an old nostalgia bomb that introduced a lot of the mechanics we're very used to by now in every open world game. If it's your first attempt at any Asssassin's Creed game I might actually advice you to skip it. Two reasons; One, while it truly stood out among previous games of its era it can feel clunky and lackluster for those that are more used to newer generations of games. The story also doesn't stand enough out to make up for this. Two, there're several bugs that makes the game unplayable before you've done several fixes. I'll explain how to fix these. But if you're someone that enjoys and appreciate older games for what they brought, and how they inspired future generations of games. And you prefer to play the game rather than watch a youtube video about it, for those looking for a playthrough of the entire series. Then I can for sure recommend it. Fixes: First: Download DXSETUP. It's supposed to happen automatic but since they shut down the servers it for some reason either skips doing so or just goes into a never ending download that you just have to cancel in the end. To do the download without issues go into files "this PC">Program Files(x86)>Steam>steamapps>common>Assassin's Creed>DirectX There you should find DXSETUP if you scroll a bit, double click and follow steps given to download. Second: This is for those that want to play with a controller, which I assume is most. First you have to connect the controller to steam, search steam controller setup on Google. Afterwards it should be a box on the right side of steam mentioning configurations and that it's connected. However this is not enough, you now have to go into the game. Make a save file and then change the settings of said save file where you have to switch from keyboard/controller to just controller as input to make it work at all. I'll also advice you to change the button layouts if it's not put up correctly, at least I had that issue. Looking around where on certain buttons instead of joystick, attack, freerun and grapple was flipped.etc Third: Since the servers got shut down there's been a huge issue with the game just freezing up every 20-30 seconds for 5-10 seconds. Kinda destroys the enjoyment of the game. It's however easily fixed in a kinda annoying way. You simply have to be disconnected from the internet while playing. The reason is as long as you are connected to the internet, the game will continue to try and connect to its servers. As earlier mentioned, theses servers doesn't exist anymore, which leads to the game continuously freezing whenever it tries to ping for something that doesn't exist. Hope this review was helpful, and sorry for any bad grammar as English is not my first language.

This game was amazing when it came out. Saying it’s okay now makes sense because the formula evolved with like 15 different games. But you gotta put yourself in the shoes of someone in 2007 who’s never seen a game like this before. I remember being impressed by the fact that you could climb any building you wanted to. It definitely is very basic by today's standards but back in 2007 there was nothing like it.

The fix to play the game without it freezing every two minutes You don't need to disconnect from the internet. Go to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc Right-click the 'hosts' file, press properties > security Click on your Windows username and press 'Edit...' to change the permissions. Under Full control check 'Allow', and click 'OK' and exit. Now open 'hosts' with notepad (not notepad++). Add the following inside the text: 216.98.48.18 127.0.0.1 216.98.48.53 127.0.0.1 216.98.48.57 127.0.0.1 216.98.48.133 127.0.0.1 216.98.48.134 127.0.0.1 203.132.26.155 127.0.0.1 And click 'Save' or press Ctrl+S. If it prompts you to "Save as..." you haven't properly changed the permissions. This change does not harm your computer or cause conflicts in the future. It fixes a bug where Assassin's Creed tried to connect to the Ubisoft servers, failing and causing the game to freeze. Since their servers are down and their IP's have changed, this fix redirects the connections back to your own computer.

If you're going to play this game. Make sure you re-route the connection your game makes to the deadge ubisoft server. Otherwise, your game is going to continue to try and connect to it, and cause you stuttering issues every minute. To do this, copy and paste this code into "C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts" and save. 203.132.26.155 127.0.0.1 If it doesnt let you do this, you have to either run as administrator. Or copy paste the hosts file to your desktop. Paste the code in the file, and then overwrite the old hostfile you couldn't change. (You must also do this as administrator). Now to the actual review of the game: Classic banger. That being said, Im still going to do some nitpicking here. The poor NPCs are annoying as fuck, there are a few bugs (expected for a 2007 game), clunky parkour mechanics (again 2007 game) and the game is just a to do list. Very bare bones and straight forward, other than kill 60 templars and find like 300 flags after the main questline, there is just nothing else to do. If you're looking to kill some time and get into the assassins creed franchise. Number one is always a good place to start because it is fairly easy and simple. If the devs cared enough for this game to attract some attention again (it's a stretch I know). Then here is 3 things I would propose: Subtitles for the game (idk how this wasnt thought of but anyways), Steam Achievements (10-15 would be fine) and lastly potential for RTX as the game, even though has an nostalgic charm, still looks like butt cheeks. I would definitely like to see a remake for this game in the future, couldn't see it happening any time soon though. If they do, I'll definitely be playing it. Because regardless of my issues, I still enjoyed my time playing this game. Hence the good review I am giving it. Now on to play Number 2 (One of my personal favourites) :) Rating: 8/10
