I love this game. I grew up playing C&C, Starcraft, Dawn of War, and Total Annihilation. I think this is a great RTS that's keeping the genre alive and well.

Its a fun game, interesting story as well. Hard though at first, even on easy! Lots to manage. But overall great game,

Great game, not too expensive, but good mix of base building and attack. Good level of complexity, even on normal, it can offer you some challenges, which keeps you hooked. Story line line for main campaign is OK, but nothing C&C worthy, but I really enjoyed it and pumped in quite a few hours.

Definitely wait for a sale, but it's a good classic style RTS. Could be great if they added more units, factions and maps (without charging an arm and a leg for it via DLC).

Less than 5% of Steam players finished the single player campaign of Ashes , and multiplayer is apparently broken for good. Seems like an obvious thumbs down. But for a certain narrow category of players [*]casual player [*]focused on single player campaign [*]enjoyed Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance but wish the campaign was longer [*]not too finicky about graphics performance even in 2024, I would recommend the game, based on the single player campaign. Much of my commentary references or compares to SCFA. Good: [*]31 missions, 4 or 5 of which might be considered tutorial [*]excellent variety of scenarios and objectives [*]excellent difficulty balance. I played on normal (usual practice for me). I'd fail a typical mission ~2 times and complete it on the 3rd attempt. [*]A few of the maps/missions are epic or at least near epic. [*]Voice acting is good, especially kyle Hebert voicing Mac. [*]overall economy design is engaging [*]IMO the "capture and hold Turinium generator until critical mass" gameplay mode has a lot of appeal. That is only employed on a couple of missions. But you can choose that in skirmish vs. AI. [*]As many quick-saves as you like. Not so good: [*]Multiplayer apparently is completely broken. (According to the forums - I didn't try.) [*]User Interface is inferior to SCFA. Build queue (or lack thereof), having to click a unit (and lose your selection) to see a description... etc, etc. I'm at 200+ hours with Ashes so it isn't lack of familiarity talking here. [*]Heavy load on your graphics card. My RX 6600 XT is marketed @ 1080p but runs most games OK @ 1440p (60Hz). With medium graphics settings, Ashes makes 60fps @ 1080p most of the time, with the GPU fans running loudly. [*]Yet the displayed graphics are so-so. Effects are OK. IMO not eye candy like Titanfall 2 or Death Stranding. About like SCFA, which runs fine @ 1440p for me. [*]no reclaim (brilliant feature of SCFA economy). [*]fog of war: I complain about this on every RTS, but it aggravated me more on Ashes than most. Unit visibility range is really short. Scouts are weak/vulnerable. When your last unit in the enemy midst dies, poof your view goes to a "heat map" (assuming you have radar). Then you can't even see the artillery that is savaging your forward units. Not my idea of fun. [*](subjective) A lot of the maps are just ugly IMO. Lots of browns and dark reds and near black. shrug: [*]two factions, pretty well balanced [*]tech tree is simpler than SCFA, but complex enough that I had all the head scratching and vexing trade-off decisions I wanted. [*]no navy. [*]no map spanning long range artillery. You could argue this makes the bigger maps more epic... [*]Skirmish vs. AI seems to work fine and there appears to be a pretty good variety of maps. I would have included this in the good list but at this point I've only played one skirmish match. [*]unit control: I complain about this on every RTS. In Ashes , the smaller land units are called frigates and cruisers. Maybe due to how they maneuver. I won't give details on the "AI", but overall it seems just as vexing as SCFA. [*]Before playing this game, I found little interest in the story or lore of any RTS game**. I didn't take much interest in this story either. [*]Tutorial missions are rushed/useless. Added after launch? Not deducting points since the early missions serve the purpose. **possible exception: [url=https://store.steampowered.com/app/38440/Sacrifice/]Sacrifice
