Really good, old school game for rpg lovers, which you can completly fuck up by loosing one of the items or killing wrong npc's. Play with Arx Libertatis mod, in case of loosing or selling key items, you can at least cheat them into existance without replaying 5 hours of the games.

Warning: The Steam build of the game is unstable, crashing every 20 minutesā€”this desperately needs a patch. This Arkane Studiosā€™ 2002 RPG, draws heavy inspiration from Ultima Underworld , immersing players in a dark, underground world where civilization has retreated from a frozen surface. Its standout feature remains the spellcasting system, where players trace runes in the air to cast magic, adding a tactile, immersive touch. The gameā€™s freedom in exploration and problem-solving, from baking bread to picking locks, foreshadows Arkaneā€™s later hits like Dishonored and Prey . Yet, for all its brilliance, Arx Fatalis is far from perfect. The combat can feel clunky, and the difficulty spikes erratically. Its narrative, while intriguing, sometimes gets bogged down in pacing issues. The game may not have reached the heights of mainstream RPGs like The Elder Scrolls , but for those who crave a deep dive into the arcane, it offers a uniquely immersive experience. Two decades later, it still casts a long, mysterious shadow, stands as a visionary gem, worth revisiting for fans of immersive, atmospheric RPGs.

A rare gem. I wish there were more like it. My play time looks low...because I've finished it a couple times before everything was on steam.

Nearly 20 years ago, I first discovered this game when my dad was playing it on the computer. My brother and I would watch in awe, and we got to play for a little while too, even though we were too young for a game like thisā€¦ you know what I mean! šŸ˜‰ Years later, I got my own PC, and guess what? I quickly grabbed the Arx Fatalis disc and dove into the captivating world of Arx. Even today, 22 years after its release, I still rave about the gameā€™s unique features. Simple activities like baking bread and roasting meat are implemented in a way that feels genuinely rewarding, something that many modern games struggle to replicate. The magic system, where you draw symbols on the screen with your hand to cast spells, adds a level of interactivity that feels timeless and incredibly engaging. Thereā€™s a wide variety of spells that can be creatively combined. The world of Arx is filled with secrets and hidden treasures waiting to be uncovered. The quests are not only well-structured but often humorous and surprising. Interacting with NPCs feels vibrant, and the conversations often reveal deeper lore about the world. While the story may be straightforward, itā€™s coherent and well-crafted. I replayed the game about two years ago, and each run unveiled new amusing details. For instance, dropping cheese might attract miceā€¦ just delightful! I also appreciate the flexibility to experiment with different playstyles. Whether you choose to be a fierce warrior, a cunning thief, or a powerful mage, each choice affects the gameplay and how characters react to you. The blend of RPG elements and an open world ensures that every play session feels unique. I wholeheartedly recommend this game to everyone! Aside from the graphics, it remains timeless and has aged remarkably well. The attention to detail and creative mechanics make ā€œArx Fatalisā€ a true classic. I still hold out hope for a sequel to this wonderful game!
