If you enjoy vampire survivors, this is another one to get that bullet-heaven style fix.

If you want a competent VS-like with lots of unlocks to grind, this is worth your money. If you're looking for something new, this ain't it. The game plays like many others. Controls are down to a joystick and an action button. While some characters get movement and defensive special abilities, there is no dash or dodge. You move around screen while all of the mobs slowly trudge toward you. Some mobs have projectiles and other tricks up their sleeves, but most are generic creeps (love the archers who chase you around oh so slowly while so they can... pinch you? Whack your shins with their unstrung bows?). The art style is fine, but overly familiar and while the assets look much more cohesive than many others, it still feels really generic. There are a bunch of characters, though, even if several are reskins, and tons of weapons and trinkets to unlock through playing the game. I'm 25 hours in and haven't been focusing on unlocks exclusively, but I've still only unlocked about a third of the equipment and characters. So far, I've only encountered standard difficulty modifiers and endless mode, so you'll mostly just be playing the same handful of maps in the same game mode over and over again. There are game speed unlocks that are very welcome. So, good, not great, pretty bland, but it plays well and lots to keep coming back for, even if without much variety in the levels.

Probably the best bullet heaven/hell game on Steam, outside of the obvious VS. Lots of weapons and upgrades, lots of characters. It's just fun, simple as that.

The fact that this game has negative reviews is proof that some people just don't know the purpose of a review. It's not about comparing games to other games and picking the "best" of a genre. It's about whether THIS game is fun to play, period. Army of Ruin is not a bad game by any measure. There is no way anyone of sound mind could objectively say there is anything so wrong with it that it's not worth the price. (EDIT: I just noticed that most of the negative reviews start with something like, "I've played at least ten Vampire Survivor clones ..." To me that says maybe you're burnt out on the genre and need to play something other than a bullet heaven game for a little while.) Does it do certain things differently from other bullet heaven games? Of course! If it were an exact clone of another game -- even one with an extremely successful formula -- THEN you might say it's bad, because it would be redundant. There can be more than one good game in a genre, more than one worth playing, and Army of Ruin certainly qualifies. The pacing of the unlocks is great. The unlocks themselves are very fun, as are the insane combos you can create with them. You can unlock rerolls to help mitigate random drops and aim for a certain dream build if you want to. Early on, you are given very fine control over your build through upgrades, and you can reset your upgrades for free between runs. Most unlocks are gated by challenges, but that is what makes the game interesting -- it gives you goals instead of making the unlock process feel like a mindless, repetitive grind. These are all things I love about Army of Ruin. What don't I love? What do I dislike? Honestly, I haven't found anything worth mentioning. I guess I'll come back here if I encounter some terrible source of frustration, but so far it's been nothing but pure pleasure that keeps me coming back and even makes me excited to try the other auto-shooters that people seem to enjoy. EDIT: I have unlocked everything and gotten 100% achievements, and the only part I found a tiny bit grindy was the unlocks that require you to last 30 minutes in a mission. However, even those can be played at high speed, so they really only take 15 minutes or less. Final verdict: The worst part of this game is really not that bad, and the best parts are fantastic. Strongly recommend.
