Amazing older game with a great main story and several good sub-stories. Save often! Save your game often!! as there are zero auto-saves and getting stunned in combat, then killed, with hours of unsaved game-play is a real let down and can happen more often than you think.

A heavily flawed masterpiece, this highly experimental CRPG set in a fantasy world undergoing an industrial revolution fortunately hits more often than it misses. Arcanum has one of the most exotic and well-crafted settings in any CRPG, and is accompanied with a fantastic story rich in adventure and philosophy. It also has one of the best levelling up systems in any video game ever, as the 16 spells colleges, 8 technological trees, and 16 regular skills facilitate a near limitless number of different builds/roleplays. However, there are major problems. The combat is borderline unplayable, and pretty much everyone uses exploits/cheese strategies to get past the fighting. Much of the loot is also terrible (see also: Hexed Items), which seriously hurts exploration, and the inventory management is just abominable, especially if you have companions. While I think the story is excellent overall, at least half of it is spent searching for the Black Mountain Clan (BMC) and hitting constant dead ends. You will also need to install mods (UAP in my case) and you will likely have to consult the wiki every 5 minutes. Overall still a fantastic game, but one that I can only recommend to serious CRPG enthusiasts.

It's 2024 and this is one of the best games I've ever played. The unofficial patch is apparently a must (haven't tried it without) but is easy to download and there is a guide on steam. If you like Tides of Numera, Torment, Baldur's Gate 1+2 (clearly superior to 3) and like quests with a variety of solutions many of them not obvious or things you'd not expect to work for a game over 20 years old then I highly recommend. The combat is much much easier on turn-based but it's also not really why you should play the game. Save often because autosave is not a thing and the early game is arguably harder. The quests are really inventive, a surprising number of starting races and backgrounds but you can also easily pivot into other builds. I found the whole tech v magick lore interesting and every town was a new adventure. Oh and I think Steam didn't record my hours on this game correctly, I got at least 60 hours out of it. Not sure I'll play again soon but an evil run will be a possibility if the lack of good games in the 2020s continues. They simply don't make them like they used to.

Most of my playtime is through UAP, which you should definitely get before playing. Genuinely one of the best CRPGs in existence. Dont look anything up, the game is much more fun if you are genuinely unsure of how to solve some quests as the answer sometimes appears much later.
