Unofficial Arcanum Patch 2.0.2 addresses the worst issues with the Steam version, making this unique title worth exploring for fans of retro isometric titles.

It's 2024 and this is one of the best games I've ever played. The unofficial patch is apparently a must (haven't tried it without) but is easy to download and there is a guide on steam. If you like Tides of Numera, Torment, Baldur's Gate 1+2 (clearly superior to 3) and like quests with a variety of solutions many of them not obvious or things you'd not expect to work for a game over 20 years old then I highly recommend. The combat is much much easier on turn-based but it's also not really why you should play the game. Save often because autosave is not a thing and the early game is arguably harder. The quests are really inventive, a surprising number of starting races and backgrounds but you can also easily pivot into other builds. I found the whole tech v magick lore interesting and every town was a new adventure. Oh and I think Steam didn't record my hours on this game correctly, I got at least 60 hours out of it. Not sure I'll play again soon but an evil run will be a possibility if the lack of good games in the 2020s continues. They simply don't make them like they used to.

you will find that the majority of negative reviews for Arcanum grasp at things such as inventory design or combat without any mention of the characters, quest design or quality of world-building, which in my opinion overpower the negative aspects. the game world feels richer and more alive to me than newer RPG worlds in 1080p with full voice acting. it's true that the combat is ass but you don't play Arcanum for the gameplay, you play it for the writing and atmosphere :-) note- trying to run this on modern hardware will run you into some some issues, you should play with the unofficial patch (https://terra-arcanum.com/drog/uap.html)

Roleplaying a dumb half-ogre. trying to get a job. My bretheren reject me because too smart. went away on a ship to another city. Ship crash everybody die. I find village. Everybody racist, mean, and insulting... and If I insult them back they try to kill me... so I have to be super polite. Outsmarting the villain in the first sidequest with 4 intelligence is hilarious lol The entirety of the dialogue is written for my dumb character. Even the journal entries. I love it. I'm missing most of the game, without charisma or intelligence, but it paradoxically gives a tolkinesque feeling the world is larger than I see. My companion even offers to talk for me! and he has dialogue! Bad game wait for remake with in-game manual. I have my laptop wiki and the printed thing in front of me. Too much for small 2024 brain. Playing slowly. Worth. Great game.

This is the best game I've ever played. I love the lore and the freedom you have to create your own characters. Troika at it's finest. If you are a RPG or fantasy fan, I highly recommend this game.
