if i was rich i would have personally bailed out linceworks :(( im so sad to see the journey end like this. i can feel the potential in this game just ready to burst, but bc the world is cruel, all thats left are shadows of what could have been. poetic.

While I do feel that Aragami 2 is not as strong as the first game, I do believe it’s worth your time if you want more of a samurai and ninja itch like ghost of Tsushima or ghost of Yotei but on a smaller scale. It gets more repetitive throughout its campaign, but it’s still a fun romp. I hope a third installment gets made soon.

Honestly, probably one of my favorite stealth games, gameplay-wise... You've probably played the first Aragami if you're here reading this? If not go play it, it's cheap and it's pretty solid. Come back once you've played that and understand the rules that game worked off of; I'm gonna be explaining how this game changes that. Anyway. Aragami 2 takes what the first game was doing and mechanically expands on it a ton . Mobility is expanded tenfold with a bunch of extra moves (as well as actual, real-ass jumping so you can platform around without restrictions). You can dash, run, dash jump, double jump, grab and move along or climb ledges, as well as teleporting to those ledges. All of these special actions eat away at your stamina bar, which restores overtime, but not in the same way as the first game; you don't NEED to stay in the shadows all the time to recover that, it just happens on its own. On that note, warping to shadows is also removed. A lot of the light/shadow mechanics from the first game are weirdly kind of removed, which is odd for what's supposed to be you playing as a shadow spirit of the night , but yeah, it's going in a different direction. All the changes here bring it much closer to something like Tenchu, with more generalized ninja/stealth gameplay. ...Which is further complimented by, the thing I was waiting to mention, combat ! The first game had that very deliberate one-shot nature where you really could NOT afford to get spotted, since everything including you died in one hit. You were encouraged to sneak around and stealth kill guards, or just avoid them entirely, and run for your life if you ever got spotted. Admittedly it does mean this game is slightly less "focused" in its design this way, but it MASSIVELY opens up possibilities and gameplay options for how you can approach situations. The combat is somewhat simple overall, you're not gonna be doing crazy DMC combos or anything, but it works pretty much perfectly for what it is. You can attack (there's charged attacks but I've never had them work very well, they often get parried from how slow they are), you can lock onto enemies to focus them down better, you can use your dash to go through enemy attacks, and you can block. Blocking consumes stamina, just like dashing, obviously, but timing it perfectly lets you do a parry which consumes the opponent 's stamina instead. So it becomes a sort of dance of hacking away at the enemy's defense (within reason) to wear them down, parrying their counterattacks, and slashing a giant chunk of their health out once their energy depletes. It's fun. On top of that, there's also nonlethal takedowns that simply knock enemies out temporarily. It helps massively with pacifist playthroughs, since you can afford to take guards out of the equation and get them out of the way without needing to kill them. You also have bodies to worry about now, in classic stealth game fashion. Bodies will stay there, be it from lethal or nonlethal takedowns, and you'll need to worry about other enemies seeing them and alerting everyone else. So you can (and likely will have to) take advantage of cover, or of the terrain, to hide bodies and prevent that. Be it hiding them in tall grass (this game's replacement for hiding in shadows), throwing them into rivers or down cliffs to remove them from the game entirely, and such. Bodies were still a thing in the first game, but not to this level of mechanical depth, and you can't afford to just delete them for free here (unless you eat them with the dragon like you could there but I digress). Abilities are also greatly expanded, there's more of them, and they're on a constant timed recharge instead of being consumable resources that you need to reach specific shrines to restock. Again, arguably less focused, but I like how it works here, and how it allows you to take on much bigger amounts of enemies confidently without stressing over wasting them. The format of the game overall is a bit different too, with a Monster Hunter-ish hub town, players being able to form lobbies and join each other in it, and a lot of shops to buy upgrades/skills, support items and equipment. Which, by the way, is GREAT. I love the sheer level of customization you have in this game, with a lot of different abilities to unlock, and tons of clothing pieces you can mix and match and change the colors of individual parts of. It's really, really good. Gameplay aside, the graphics are also pretty improved from the first game! Everything has more detail, the environments are rather pretty, and the cutscenes are more in-depth. ...Though this is also where this being a low-budget indie kind of rears its ugly head, because there's a good amount of kind of stiff, janky or weird-looking animations, and... The most blatant thing, characters not moving their mouths to talk. I get it, yeah, most people here are Aragamis with their faces covered by masks so no need to animate anything there, but there's also human characters without masks and they didn't bother animating those. It REALLY takes you out of the story, especially when the camera zooms all the way in to show the models. Plenty of weird clipping too, with stuff like hair physics and the like. The music 's pretty good also! A decent variety of tracks, mainly using traditional japanese instruments (so no weird unfitting Dynasty Warriors rock or anything like that, thankfully); music dynamically transitions during gameplay into alert/combat tracks and back when you're spotted or in combat, before going back to the calmer general area themes. I don't think I'd actively listen to anything here outside of the game? But it works perfectly well in the game for what it's trying to accomplish. The story is, uh... Okay it's fine, right? The first game's story was just alright, this game's story starts pretty decent, and I do like the buildup to the final stretch of it (and the final boss encounter was absolutely phenomenal ), but the pacing's kind of weird, there's a lot of missions that kind of feel like filler where not much is happening so it drags on at points, and the final part while ambitious feels kind of scatterbrained and doesn't explain things very well. I only half-had any idea what was going on by the end of it. I feel like they could've used another script pass and some moving events around so they could explain things clearer and it would've worked a lot better. Again, the story's... fine , but it's a bit confusingly told and ultimately is just kind of an excuse to get into the really really good gameplay. Anyway, yeah. It's pretty damn good. Like the first game, you're mainly going to play this for the gameplay and not the story, and the gameplay is an absolute BANGER. It's a different direction from the first game, but it's very enjoyable in its own way. You might not be AS into it if you really really liked the super carefully put together balance of the first game, but I still think it's really really good for what it is. Absolute blast to play through, especially with friends.

Co-op tenchu. It is more action than the first game. Stealth skills are OP. They reuse the same maps too much. Story is ass.

Far less paper folding than i thought it would be but still a very addictive game play loop of stealthily slaughtering minions and leaping around a lot of fun!
