When I think of video games as an art form, this game is often the first to come to mind. The character designs, game play, and story all mix together in such an excellent way. The bow on top, and I cannot express this strongly enough, is the soundtrack. This was one of my earliest purchases on Steam, and I've had the soundtrack for years. Even if this game is not your thing, I would highly recommend getting the soundtrack. If you want a whimsical game about a fish girl on an adventure of self discovery...and that gets kind of dark and crazy at the end...this is for you. Check it out, you won't regret it.

Overview: Aquaria, developed by Derek Yu and Alec Holowka, is a unique indie game that combines elements of exploration, puzzle-solving, and storytelling in an underwater world. The game is often praised for its beautiful hand-drawn art style, atmospheric music, and engaging gameplay mechanics. Gameplay: Players control Naija, a mermaid-like creature, as she navigates the vast ocean, uncovering secrets and solving puzzles. The controls are fluid, allowing for seamless swimming through the vibrant underwater environments. The game features a non-linear structure, encouraging exploration and rewarding players with hidden treasures and lore. Visuals and Sound: The hand-drawn graphics are stunning, with each area of the ocean offering a distinct visual style. The game’s soundtrack, composed by Alec Holowka, complements the visuals perfectly, enhancing the immersive experience. The music dynamically changes based on the player’s actions and location, adding to the overall atmosphere. Story: Aquaria weaves a captivating narrative about self-discovery and connection with the ocean. As Naija uncovers her past and the mysteries of her world, players become emotionally invested in her journey. The storytelling is subtle, often conveyed through environmental cues and interactions rather than traditional dialogue. Legacy: The game has had a lasting impact on the indie game scene, inspiring many developers with its art and design. Sadly, Alec Holowka's passing in 2020 was a significant loss to the gaming community. His contributions to Aquaria and other projects continue to resonate, and his legacy is honored through the games he helped create. Final Thoughts: Aquaria is a beautifully crafted game that stands out for its artistic presentation and engaging gameplay. It’s a heartfelt journey that encourages exploration and discovery, making it a must-play for fans of indie titles. The tragic loss of Alec Holowka adds a poignant layer to the game's legacy, reminding us of the passion and creativity that fuel the gaming industry

It's a charming underwater game with simple controls and nice music It's an rpg with almost no dialogue and little narration. The game focuses on exploring the different water planes and solving simple puzzles to uncover the final mystery You can collect different trinkets hidden through the entire world as well as collect recipes for cooking. The battle system is simple and has some variation depending on the boss but it's not too challenging. I recommend this game to people who enjoy underwater worlds and like both exploring in peace and fighting occassionally. The game is also rather short and can be finished quickly if one ignores "mini bosses" and "side quests"
