I played these games separately before they were assembled into this collection, and I recommend every one of them. Smart and funny writing, good music, and lots of surprising plot developments.

it's really refreshing to see thecatamites take on a more traditional narrative-driven project, and I think he absolutely knocked it out of the park. this collection is easily one of the best things I've played this year, full of extremely charming art and sharp writing with a distinct, offbeat sense of humor. the best part is seeing how each game evolves and builds on what came before, it's a collection that had me going "okay this has to be the best one, right?" constantly. very inspirational stuff! you should play it!

I absolutely love this game. It's like a Scooby Doo chase sequence through the corpse of western civilization. 9 stories told from across 4 years, building on each others themes and ideas, and growing in quality and ambition. Gameplay is mostly walking, but it's in service of the narrative experience (:walking simulator" as they say). On the superficial level, the game has lots of wonderfully bizarre liminal spaces to explore, like the set of an immersive theater whose boundaries are unclear. Plenty of memorable character designs and atmospheric music to boot. Dig into the - at times purposely obtuse - narrative, and you'll find a pretty chilling reflection of modern dystopia. The writing turns a lot of abstract facets of the modern world into movie monsters with knives, some of which I don't think I've ever seen tackled in games (like the embodied concept of the fallible and morally agnostic, but still oppressive nature of enduring moral iconography embodied in a robot with a Mesopotamian god mask). AotK's depth doesn't come from the interconnectivity of its cast or a fine detailed world, but from the richness of the critique and satire that defines it. It's the kind of writing that would risk being tedious in most stories, but here it's balanced by a cartoony sense of humor that knows when to take the piss out of itself. If you're a fan of surreal horror, or just want a story that can help walk you through a funhouse of modern dystopia, then you'll get a kick out of this. I think Night in the Woods fans - especially people who were intrigued by the Black Goat cult stuff - will find something here to love. Personal favorite parts for me: Flesh of the Killer, Ears of the Killer, Face of the Killer, but they're all wonderful.

As a fan of narrative games, I absolutely adore Anthology of the Killer. This game is the highest grade of Kino; I have wanted something like this to exist ever since I played the point-and-click village mystery quest in Adventure Quest, and various horror flash games on new grounds in the 2000s. Ignore my low playtime as I played the full game when it was first released on itch io. Don't be mistaken by its name. While technically an Anthology, this game tells a coherent story with a consistent protagonist. So don't play any of the chapters out of order if you want the best experience. While it is surrealist in moments, the game is rather easy to understand. And despite what some of the store screenshots show, this game is set in real locations most of the time, bringing you to spooky towns, city streets, the theater, an art museum, and even a public pool. The story is comedic and has a real heart to it, and was written with an obvious love of various horror movies. In this game, you play as BB, an aloof woman who constantly finds herself in situations where various things are trying to kill her. If you are a fan of Slasher movies, then you will love this game as few games attempt to simulate playing as the final girl in a slasher movie as well as this. Even if the tone feels closer to Scooby Doo at times. While BB is the star of the show, the cast of side characters and villains, both recurring and one-off, are amazing. Special mention goes to BB's sister ZZ, and the twin nurses. Some lines of dialogue have not left my mind since I finished it weeks ago. The game's art style is striking, at times feeling like Paper Mario, but it still has its own style. BB has a simple yet incredibly good design. And every level has a perfect spooky atmosphere to the backgrounds. The animations the game has, while simple, are also great looking. It sometimes looks like something you would have played on Newground's in the 2000's in the best way possible. The character's designs are all striking and memorable, and it's obvious a ton of care went into drawing and animating each character. The gameplay is rather simple, most of it consists of walking while reading text. The only 'challenge' comes from chase scenes that normally happen a couple of times per episode. But it's almost better to be caught, as most, if not every time you fail a chase you are treated to unique artwork of how BB escapes death as an in-universe explanation for restarting the chase. Most levels start out slow with you having a few mostly linear areas to go through with some optional dialogue until inevitably a killer shows up and BB has to run the final girl circuit. The soundtrack in this game is also fantastic. Special mention goes to Weepster's Lament and Funky Jazz, which are absolute banger's. I can't recommend this game enough. I think it deserves more recognition than it has gotten. I feel like if this game came out on Newground's in the 2000's it would have massively affected online culture for a while. From the dialogue, visuals, and music, the game has not left my mind since I played it after its release on itch io. It is one of the best games of 2024, and perhaps the greatest comedy horror game of all time.
