Anomaly: Warzone Earth offers a fresh twist on the traditional tower defense genre, flipping the script and placing you in command of the attackers. Unlike typical tower defense games where you build towers to fend off waves of enemies, Anomaly challenges you to lead a convoy of vehicles through heavily fortified enemy lines, making it a "reverse tower defense" experience. Set in the near future, the game takes place in cities like Baghdad and Tokyo, where alien forces have unleashed an array of defensive turrets and fortifications. Your mission is to guide your convoy through these perilous environments, strategizing your path and adapting to ever-changing battlefields. The blend of strategy and real-time tactics is executed brilliantly, keeping players engaged and on their toes. The gameplay is intuitive yet challenging, requiring players to think ahead and carefully plan their routes while managing resources. You can customize your convoy with different units, each offering unique abilities, allowing for various tactical approaches. On top of that, the dynamic environments and beautifully rendered graphics immerse players in the high-stakes mission to save Earth from alien occupation. The game also features a strategic layer where you can deploy power-ups and abilities, such as repairing damaged units or deploying smoke screens to confuse enemy turrets. These elements add depth to the gameplay, making each decision crucial to your success. Whether you're a fan of traditional tower defense games looking for something new, or a strategy enthusiast eager for a unique challenge, Anomaly: Warzone Earth delivers an experience that is both familiar and refreshingly original. It's a must-play for anyone who enjoys strategic thinking and intense tactical battles.

Great little gem of a strategy game which came out all the way back in 2011. It feels modern and all around polished. I'm wondering if there have been any other games of this type since as the concept and execution are brilliant and clean.

I reached Mission 13 out of 15 in this game before giving up. This was a fairly innovative game when it came out. For the most part, I think this game delivers on the promise of its concept, a compelling reverse tower defense. They could have easily tried making the player control many forces and essentially turned it into a specialized RTS or MOBA, but I like that they kept the game focused on a single squad moving through a level together. It keeps the game conceptually simple. That doesn't mean the game is easy. It quickly becomes clear early in the campaign that buying some optimal units and letting them run freely isn't sufficient for survival. In order to complete most of the missions, you need to do things like swap unit positions mid-combat, deploy power-ups in just the right places and times, and exchange unit types to deal with changing threats. In this way, it actually has a sort of real-time action feel like a twitch shooter, but with the benefit of being able to pause the game at any time to issue commands, which means you can still make these seemingly split-second decisions at your own pace, if that makes any sense. I actually had to look up gameplay videos online to learn how to clear some missions because the exact mechanics of how to overcome certain threats weren't always clear to me, even after repeated attempts. However, it never felt like the game was impossible, only that I needed to practice very granular control of my units to win. The reason I ended up quitting was that Mission 13 in particular introduces elements of randomness which just don't sit well with me. The game is challenging enough as it is without getting completely screwed by RNG. The checkpoint system is about as nice as one could reasonably expect, but it's still not perfect. The problem is that you only ever have the choice between restarting the mission from the beginning or the last checkpoint, but even with checkpoints fairly close together as the crow flies, some of the multi-enemy encounters in between them involve many careful steps, so clearing a bunch of enemies only to die to the last one before a checkpoint results in the massive chore that is starting over and trying to finish all the enemies again in a slightly more efficient way. Other times, you make a mistake before a check, and the only way to undo it is to start the mission over again from the beginning, since you can't choose checkpoints. The missions get longer and consist more checkpoints as you progress through the game, which sounds like intuitive game design, but I found myself wishing the missions were shorter so that I wouldn't have to restart as often or deal with the frustration of trying to redeem a bad checkpoint. Mission 13 essentially adds random enemy air strikes, so on top of dealing with all the normal chaos of the game and its checkpoint system, you can get unlucky and be forced into an air strike that wipes your entire team out in one fell swoop. I had numerous times where everything was going great, and then an air strike appeared which I either couldn't avoid, or would have to choose an extremely sub-optimal route through difficult enemies to avoid. I figured enough was enough. I had gotten what I wanted out of the game.
