Annalynn is a 1980s-style arcade platformer that blends the game mechanics of Pac-Man and Donkey Kong Jr. It was released by solo developer Cruise Elroy in 2021, although it would have been right at home in the arcades of my youth. The game’s premise is simple - Annalynn is a miner who has mined her way into caverns rich with treasure, but that are also the home of four snakes who want her gone. The game has 16 levels, and you’re given 3 lives and unlimited continues to make your way through all the levels and to the final boss encounter. The interesting wrinkle is that whenever you use a continue, your high score is cut in half. I thought this was very clever, because it means that you can easily beat the game every time you sit down to play it, but you might end a run early if you run out of lives but have a high score you’ve never accomplished before that you want to preserve. The core gameplay itself is straightforward. Each level is full of gems. When you collect all the gems, you complete the level. However the snakes will pursue you across the level, moving between positions using doorways only they can enter, and having slightly different platforms they can move across meaning they don’t follow the exact same rules you do. Part of the game is learning how to predict and anticipate their movements - I spent a lot of time in the early game dying to their unexpected arrival through doorways for example. Additionally, a handful of gems on each level are blinding gems, which make the snakes vulnerable to being kicked by Annalynn and temporarily removing them from the level. The game does a great job of emulating the feel of the arcade games of the 80s with the pixel graphics and chiptune score, but pulled forward into the present with responsive controls and its forgiving unlimited continues. Annalynn sells for full price at 4.99 USD. Its 16 levels can be beaten in about half an hour, but the enjoyment from a game like this comes from replaying over and over to improve your performance and increase your high score. The game rewards replays by giving you color palette unlocks for Annalynn when you accomplish certain achievements like a perfect playthrough of a specific level, or surviving a certain number of levels without needing to use a continue. On top of that, beating the game once will unlock a practice mode to perfect individual levels, and a random mode which is a challenge mode that lets you play the game with the levels randomly reordered and a limited number of continues. It has been a long time since a game made me shout “oh come on” after I blundered into an enemy, or made me grip my controls with white knuckles as I edge closer to my high score, which is to Annalynn’s credit. Even though I was raised on 80s arcade games, I don’t feel a lot of nostalgia for them. I don’t miss the input lag or the clunky feeling controls or difficulties that were tuned around eating all your quarters, but Annalynn surgically took the parts of those games that I enjoyed and pulled it forward into the smoother and more player friendly game design of the present, and made a truly enjoyable game. This is an excellent arcade game that feels just like a lost Donkey Kong or Pac Man, inspired by those but unique enough to not feel like a copy. My primary issue is that you can't choose lives or levels in order to practice certain areas, even if that would require turning off high score. I'd really like to see the dev patch this because it would be a really easy patch and make the game much more fun imo. Other than that, I highly recommend this if you love old arcade games.

Very fun, inspired by classic arcade games, it's a simple, and quite entertaining, nothing mindblowing or lifechanging, but it really doesn't have to be, I recommend this if you want a simple, short game, with personality and charm.

I have always been a massive Pac-Man/Namco fan since I was really little, even with how little I really got to play a lot of the much older arcade games myself back then and mostly resorted to watching gameplay videos and playing rereleases on plug-n-play machines I owned, the characters and vibe of the franchise really appealed to me back then, and even moreso nowadays. In current day, I've been able to play a lot more of Namco's arcade games and have unsurprisingly enjoyed them a lot. With this in mind you could probably imagine just how much appeal Annalynn had to me by the time I learned about it. I've actually known about this game since around the time it became available on Steam, however I didn't own a computer until a couple of years ago, but it was one of the very first games I got because of how much I've been really into it since learning about it. This game seems takes so much inspiration from that 80's Namco arcade era that I've loved and adored for so long, with it's really cute and charming visuals that take after a lot from this era, a really fun soundtrack that seems to be composed using a very similar soundfont to music played in Namco arcade games (I even noticed the intro cinematic has a little riff that sounds VERY similar to the Pac-Man intermission theme) and really well balanced and addictive gameplay that feels ever so SLIGHTLY frustrating at times, feeling very reminiscent of how fun but somewhat punishing 80's arcade games used to be. The characters and how they're design seem to also take after those from Pac-Man too, with a whole different theme and charm to them that I've been obsessed with since first seeing this game. This game has so much charm and style to it, on top of it being a really fun and simple but very well designed game, I have yet to 100% the game yet, (I'm coming off of multiple failed single credit runs as I type this lol) but I've already decided ages ago that this is probably one of my favorite games ever, and a game I totally could see much younger self obsessing and loving as much as I do today. Very hopeful to see what's yet to come from Cruise and the others behind this game!
