Pretty wild that this game and Mullet Madjack came out within months of each other. Candy colored neon styles for miles, fast paced FPSes that use a really similar "the foot is mightier than the gun" mechanic as an alternative to just blasting your way through, in series of small rooms that make up the games' levels. I mean, what are the odds? They're not the same people. Do they know each other? Are they buds? Do they go to the same dispensary? And you can buy them together in a bundle, too. If you buy anything during these upcoming holiday sales, BUY THAT BUNDLE. Anyway, this game is just brimming with new ideas to the FPS genre, genuinely funny humor, and a kind of pothead dirtbag vibe that makes it feel like underground rock. It's fast, but it's also strategic. It can be damn tough, but you can also tinker with settings and ease the load a bit. Many levels to beat, each with their own different qualifications to 3-star them, secrets to find, and hilarious conversations to be had. Some of the levels also lean more towards platforming, especially the one that sees you leaping though the air from building to building. Level of the year, if there was such a thing. One of those games you leave perma-installed and blast away at a few levels at a time when you need a hit. Just terrific. 9.5/10

Finally, sequel for Dark Messiah! It's good. and not just because of kicking. As for me, here are most outstanding features: 1. Top tier NPC monologues 2. Cool difficulty progression system - the further you get, not only goons get more angry, but also frame rate drops greatly Feels fresh.

The Ugly: Performance is terrible by moments, but I guess they could fix that in the long run. The game has some very steep difficulty spikes by moments, I can understand this could be a turn down. The Bad: The gameplay and level design is simple, maybe too much by moments. Enemies are very recognizable, BUT this come at the price they only have 1 design for each type you encounter. I was honestly expecting enemies to at least have a different skin per zone. Also, the fact that you can cheese entire boss fights with the right sneakers feels cheap. I would have preferred more polished boss fights and being forced to be barefoot, so that the fight can be tailor-made to a certain skill cap. The Good: The art style of the game is super cool, and the overall game is a pretty blunt but enjoyable satire. The soundtrack is absolute fire, Jaybooty is in the same boat as Mick Gordon or Jeremy Soule, just not in the same genre. Sound design is also superb, you know what attacks you, where and when. The saturated screams of the enemies you kill, fairly stupid but funny in the given context. Dialogues are pretty silly, but If you can embrace the silliness radiating from the game, it's an enjoyable no-brainer. Overall a great experience, I waited this game for two years and was not disappointed.

Takeaway: First-Person Shooter Hotline Miami with a punk and irreverent attitude and a hardstyle soundtrack. GOTY contender for me. PROS: - Fast-paced "Push Forward Combat" - Extremely fluid gameplay (over-all) - Soundtrack is BANGING - Quick short levels - Lots of replayability - Unique art style, characters and world-building - FUN GAME - if it wasn't, the price wouldn't be worth it, and people who make fun games deserve to get paid CONS (which can all be patched out): - Needs an optimisation pass in the later "exterior" levels where framerate drops below 30 fps - Some enemies can shoot through walls at corners No wonder Devolver Digital picked this game up - it's right up their alley. Hope this game gets word of mouth because once I 100% this game, I want a sequel/DLC/something more.

Footline Miami... But for real, they nailed the difficulty, it's weird, it's enjoyable, and most of all refreshing.
