You start the game and you are like "hell yeah dragon dating sim" and you think to yourself "man this is going to be so fun and not emotionally damaging" Then you get the bad ending on your first playtrough and you will enter such a deep state of depression that looking at the title screen will make the toughest of men, women and everyone in between weep Also Remy my beloved

I bought this game on a whim back in September 2019. Little did I know what was in store for me. When I first met the character Bryce, I didn't think I'd ever feel such a way for a fictional character. I wanted him to be mine. I played through his route, and watched fireworks with him. But of course, anyone who's played knows how his bad ending goes... I was truly inconsolable by the time the credits rolled. Bryce made me feel things I didn't think I ever would. And those feelings only grew. I had to fix this. His bad ending inspired me. I started writing, playing through the game as I worked. I got both bad and good endings for each character. Remy, Lorem, Anna, and Adine were all on my list. And then it was time. I played through Bryce's route one last time before calling everyone I met for a meeting. On that fateful night, just a few months after I first launched this masterwork, I saw the credits roll one final time. And I wept. I wept tears of joy and relief knowing that I could sleep peacefully with my dragon by my side.. Thank you to this game for helping me to fall so deeply in love. And thank you to its creator for reigniting my love of writing. Your game changed me for the better, and I will forever hold that sentiment close.

Played On Steam Deck Note: to speed up text, bind R3 to Tab in Controller settings Time to 100%: ~15h I never thought I’d find myself emotionally invested in a world where dragons walk around like they’re attending a fantasy convention 24/7, but here I am. “Angels with Scaly Wings” is a visual novel that caught me off guard in the best possible way. If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to play “Ace Attorney” meets “How to Train Your Dragon,” this is close to it. First off, the story. You play as a human ambassador sent to a parallel universe inhabited by dragons. Yes, dragons. And not the fire-breathing, princess-stealing kind, but the talking, philosophizing, “Let’s grab a coffee and discuss existentialism” kind. The narrative dives deep into themes of trust, betrayal, and friendship, all while you’re trying to solve a murder mystery. It’s like “Danganronpa” but with scales, and surprisingly, it works. The characters are where this game shines—or should I say, glimmers with a faint dragon-y glow. Each dragon has a distinct personality, and you’ll find yourself chuckling at their quirks. Remy, the bookish dragon who’s practically allergic to social interaction, quickly became my spirit animal. And then there’s Adine, who’s as energetic as a puppy on espresso. The dialogue is witty, although at times extremely verbose, and the choices you make appear to matter. Now, onto the gameplay. If you’ve played visual novels before, you’ll feel right at home with the click-to-advance system. But unlike some other games in the genre, “Angels with Scaly Wings” offers a plethora of branching paths and multiple endings. Just when you think you’ve got the plot figured out, the game throws you a curveball. However, I did find some of the endings a bit repetitive, like replaying “Undertale” for the nth time just to see if you missed a single pixel of content. Comparatively, “Angels with Scaly Wings” stands tall—or flies high—against other visual novels. The art style, while not groundbreaking, is endearing. The music, on the other hand, is like that one friend who always brings a ukulele to parties – enjoyable, but sometimes you wish they’d take a break. So, should you play “Angels with Scaly Wings”? Absolutely. It’s a delightful, quirky adventure that offers more depth than you’d expect from a game about dragon diplomacy. Just be prepared for some repetitive moments and the occasional cheesy line. But hey, if you can handle the social awkwardness of a dragon who just wants to read in peace, you’ll be in for a treat. 8/10, would befriend a dragon again.

One of the best Indie games I've ever played, and criminally underplayed by the gaming community. On par with, if not better than, other Indie "anime dating sim" games like Doki Doki Literature Club. (Anyone who has played that other game knows the "anime dating sim" aspect is just a front, and it's the same with this game.) Contrary to popular rumor, sure, you go on "dates" with dragon-people but nothing needs to be overtly sexual. Depends on how you want to play your character, and what characters you choose to date, I guess - they all have their personalities, some very wholesome, some not so much. The characters feel very "human" for being dragon-folk. The game also somehow managed to utilize a mechanic of repetition without feeling overly repetitive, which impressed me. I have other plot-related praises that I can't detail here without giving spoilers. All I can say is "trust me, this game is worth playing." I also can't post a recommendation for this game without also posting a recommendation for some of its mods. One of these is "A Solitary Mind" which fleshes out a minor character named Naomi into a full companion. Unlike many mods, it felt like it blended into the game flawlessly, and the story stuff with her was very fun. I can't play this game without it now. I've played this game quite a bit offline, so my Steam playtime might not reflect my at least 6+ playthroughs at this point. That said, the game can be short or long depending on what you want out of it. If you want the "perfect ending" you're probably going to need to do quite a few runs. Personally, I was okay with doing a run or two, taking a break from the game, then coming back and doing more runs at a later date. The game is nice like that. The game also has a handy "skip" function for scenes you've already viewed, though I don't use it often, since it's nice to get the recaps again after a hiatus.

I didn't expect to put over 30 hours into a visual novel over the last 10 days, but here I am. I came in open-minded, and I've enjoyed this rollercoaster of a ride immensely. Few games make you care for the characters this much.
