Angel at Dusk is a power fantasy shmup. That's not to say it's bad, but most of it was made with beginners in mind, and it won't appease most of the hardcore shoot 'em up fans. The game offers three distinct Arcade campaigns, all with unique levels and bosses, and the Chronicle mode, which is a long mode progression and customizable abilities. Chronicle mode is, of course, not made for veterans, and this might be a problem because it needs to be cleared in order to unlock the third Arcade campaign. I personally did not have an issue with this, as the later levels of Chronicle mode offer a good challenge, and figuring out the best weapons and stage routes is useful for playing Arcade later on. The Arcade modes themselves each have three difficulties, the last of which I found to be the most fun (even though I'm quite bad at shmups). The game is very forgiving when it comes to survival play, and allows many misses before you get a game over. This causes score play to be the most fun, and Angel at Dusk does a great job introducing score even to beginners. The score system is simple, you get more points the closer you are to the enemy as you kill it. What makes it especially rewarding is that score doubles as experience points, which upgrades your ship, making it visibly larger and its shots more powerful. Upon getting hit, your score/exp received gets a 10% penalty for a while, so you're still encouraged to play clean, especially if you're trying to climb the online leaderboards. There's also many unlockable ships, each with its own score rate (to keep the most powerful ones less competitive when it comes to scoring). Another thing Angel at Dusk does exceptionally well is the presentation. It's filled with beautiful thematic art, from the title screen, to the angel designs, and to the HUD itself. The visual and audio feedback makes destroying pieces of large enemies and collecting items extra rewarding. Charged shots feel powerful and push back enemy bullets, allowing you to fight back the densest of enemy barrages. The screen shake, meaty sounds, animated sprites, and chunks of enemies exploding contribute to form an extremely satisfying experience. Despite that, I changed the bullets to "e-sports mode" to make them more visible, since the game offers such accessibility options. The game's lore is very interesting to read, which is unexpected for this type of game, but you'll need to read it in your log collection, because it goes by very fast during gameplay. Angel at Dusk is worth playing simply for the art and experience themselves, but there is a lot to love here. If you are a beginner, this can be your chance to learn to enjoy a new genre. If you're a veteran, this can be a relaxing break from the demanding arcade difficulty and a subversive, refreshing take on shmups made by someone who loves them and understands them like you do (in contrast to the likes of Cygni).

Always wanted a shmup that has a similar grotesque and beautiful style like Scorn? Look no further. What a fantastic game, I love it, its already my all time favorite in this genre. Gameplay wise its fluid and awesome, collect EXP from enemies to level up, making your ship bigger with a damage bonus, hitbox stays the same. Getting damaged doesnt make you lose power ups or levels, it also doesnt suffer from this "continue" system, where one hit is the end, you have a HP bar, which grows with levels, and it even refills slowly on itself. Shooting enemies real close speeds that process up, same with the bombs, risk and reward. The variety of unique enemy designs and stage backgrounds is huge, its nothing short of impressive, love the music as well. Suprisingly a lot of lore and world building for a shmup. A small detail I noticed is that the eyes on your left HUD always follow your ships movement. Thats really neat. Like most shmups, it comes with a arcade mode, which gives you set angels/ships with their own powers, however, where this game really shines is the original mode. Within this one, you can play story mode, which is comprised of the arcade mode stages, but you can modify your own ship, and then we have chronicle, a onslaught of stages and paths you can choose, getting more difficult each stage. Now to the modification, everything in original mode allows you to drop many different weapons, and the harder it gets, the higher the level of the drop. You can modify your cannon, heavy cannon, and bomb. What you dont want can be eaten, and gives you points to use for permanent upgrades. Flamethrower type cannons are absolutely OP. All this makes the game super engaging and extremely fun. The only things I dont like are the labyrinth like stages, and in arcade mode you unlock different ship designs, but you cant switch the look of the ship in the original mode. Eating weapons also takes ages, because you cant select multiple at once, its kinda annoying. Other than this, I cant praise this developer enough, a must have. This game was made by a guy who's been creating insane doujin shmups since the 90's, and I feel like this might be his magnum opus or at least a breakout hit. I've seen chatter about this game outside of shmup circles and I think that even if you're not a hardcore shmup nut this game might be able to hook you. Akiragoya's games are super unique, there's almost no shmups that feel as chaotic and manic while being as approachable, constantly having you zip around to collect power ups and i-frames and aggressively taking enemies down at close range, all while dodging patterns that are simple but spectacular and play into the high movement and aggression focus. And that's to say nothing of how JUICY it all is with some of the best explosions and screenshake and screenfilling weapons in the market. What this one also brings to the table compared to his other games is a ton of content that should satisfy even players who usually get bored after one playthrough of a shmup. It's practically four games in one with multiple "episodes" and a branching pathed pseudo-rpg mode that's incredibly addictive and well done. It even has a compelling story and setting, which I can only describe as "an insane heavy metal fan tries to write a setting around h.r giger's paintings" with lore and an unfolding epic saga of humanities return to humanity gradually uncovered across all the episodes and playthroughs. Even if you're not much of a shmupper, I highly recommend this game. It's just stupidly fun to play and this guy really knew how to make a shmup that should appeal even to normies.

Angel at Dusk is a new shmup from one of my favorite doujin developers Akiragoya. Beautiful aesthetics and upbeat music make this game so satisfying to play. Gameplay wise it is pretty simple, the mechanics involve the player being able to choose different ships with unique loadouts. Depending on the set up you’ll have a main shot, special shot and finally a defense mechanism that could either be a bomb of sorts or just explosions/health recovery to help you throughout your run. The game encourages the player to be very aggressive as this allows you to collect “green hearts”. These green hearts provide you stamina which once maxed give a temporary barrier for a short period and gives you an extra life. Your special shot usually involves canceling bullets and timing this can be essentially when dealing with a lot of beefy enemies at once. The lore of the story is actually pretty interesting. it's rare for me to dive deep and find out what the story is of any shmup unless I really like it. This one in particular drew me in solely because the art and certain endings makes you really curious about the world. Mankind has realized homogeneity is a long term stability for humanity and throughout the years eventually learn how to erase bad thoughts, desires, and intelligence. They created a homogenous body free of human tendencies. They are to be reborn as a mutation of something else, the birth of angels. There is more to it but I think it's pretty weird in a good way. There's three different routes in the game. Awaken, Fallen/Descension and Angel of Eternity arc. Each start out having you play very hard difficulty but don't worry this is actually the easy mode in the game to help you get a feel for the game. After clearing those you'll unlock extinction difficulty if you want a challenge. I played through chronicle mode in order to unlock the angel of eternity arc and once I cleared that I finally felt pretty satisfied with the game itself. It was cleared on arcade mode but there is also original mode which I believe can use the level up items from chronicle mode. One last thing is a boss rush mode which unlocks final extinction. It is the hardest difficulty exclusive to boss rush mode only. The game offers online leaderboards and different variants and ships to unlock. There's quite a bit of content in this game which I believe can draw in those who are looking for a casual time and those looking for a satisfying reward. I’m excited for Akiragoya’s future releases. I am a big fan of his Yakouga series.
