Ambre - a heartbreaking kinetic novel is a beautifully sad and kind of disturbing casual, virtual novel game, now before I begin to talk about the story just want to say that for those who are playing the game for the first time you're going to immediately jump to a certain conclusion of how the story is going to go, but trust me it's not going to go in that direction just stick with it till the end, alright then the story. Tristan Mallory has just left his job feeling emotionally and physically exhausted, but it isn't the work that's causing this problem it's the fact that he feels utterly alone, but soon he meets a little girl who will ease his loneliness for a time. So now the likes, the story is really good I liked the themes of innocence, depression and having to shoulder a burden for the ones we love. I also liked how it talks about the toxic standards put on people from fashion magazines and such, especially standards put on women having to look a certain way, act a certain way or do something a certain way or else you’re a failure or selfish or broken. I really enjoyed the twist and how it put things in new contacts I especially like the ending as it was a real gut punch. The gameplay is very simple it's basically like any virtual novel games where you just read the story, but unlike those games where you at least have some choice this game doesn't give you a choice which is good, as I believe having choices in this game would have hurt the story. The graphics/artstyle is very good, very pleasing to the eyes and vary cute, it has this nice anime-ish feel to it with very vibrant and bright colors, even in some of the more somber parts. I especially liked the look and color palette of the little girl’s room it's very adorable and it feels like something out of a little girl’s fantasy. The levels in the game were good and nicely diverse each one with its own interesting look, I especially like the child's room as I said in the graphics talk it's very pleasing to look at with its bright color palette, it also has plenty of great set pieces that make this feel like any little girl would love it. The characters in the game were good and well written like Tristan Mallor at first he comes off as really shady but then after the twist you really start to emphasize with him. Amber was also really good, at first you think she's just an ordinary little girl but then as you keep reading you realize wait a second she acts and talks and has desires that no little girl’s her age would have and then you find out the twist and it all makes sense and paints it in a very sad light. The music was very good it did the game quite well, I also enjoyed that the game was free. And one other thing I liked about this game it's kind of like a horror game, it's not like you're traditional horror, but it has horror elements especially the twist at the end and how it puts the whole story in a new light. So now the dislikes, I will say that there should have been a content warning, granted I know why they didn't add it because they didn't want to spoil the twist but I think a contact warning would have been appropriate. Alright now with that all said and done with Ambre - a heartbreaking kinetic novel is a beautifully sad and kind of disturbing casual virtual novel game, it has a really good story, very good graphics/artstyle and vary good characters. So do I recommend this game, honestly it's quite difficult for me to recommend it. Now don't get me wrong it's a good game and has a really good story, it's just there are plenty of parts that can make an average player uncomfortable, disturbed, disgusted and like I said you'll jump to a conclusion, but at the same time if you just stick with the story you'll get it. So if you're mature enough and can handle dark subject matter than this game could be for you, I also hope these guys make more games especially horror games.
