One of my favourite games of the genre. I don't have quite the insane number of hours in it as I have in Slay the Spire, but it's a great game for those who like roguelite deck builders. Effectively this is like Slay the Spire but with the added dimension of being able to move around the arena to dodge attacks, trick your enemies into attacking each other, and other sneaky tricks. The balancing is okay -- there are several viable strategies, but certain strategies are lot harder to pull off than others. It's not as beautifully tuned as Slay the Spire, but there are plenty of interesting strategies. I did find my first run surprisingly easy; I actually defeated the final boss on my very first run, but I will say I've failed plenty of runs since then and I have several hundred hours of playtime in Slay the Spire so it's not my first rodeo, so it's challenging enough. I've recently found myself saying "this game is ok but you should really play Alina of the Arena instead" twice while reviewing other games in the genre, so I felt I should come back and give this the review it deserves. 10/10 and great replay value. PS. The music while fighting the demon of the arena is probably the most epic boss battle theme since Megalovania and it never fails to set the mood and get me humming along during that battle.

Good AI, Tactical, Rogue like, Fluid animation and fun card draw Can't ask for more. Just above can beat most of AAA games. It will take 20~ hours to see all the enemies, but how long will it take for you to beat them? Beat them in the most convoluted ways?

Alina of the Arena is essentially Slay the Spire but your character can move around. But saying it like that doesn't give it the credit it deserves - it's not just a clone with an extra gimmick - it absolutely stands on it's own merit. Being able to move around adds a lot to think about. You can stack loads of movement cards so that you can always evade enemy attacks but if you're always moving you're not doing much damage yourself. You could focus on bleeds or fire so the enemies are always taking damage even if you're not close, or pick up a bow. You could use knockback moves to push enemies around so they kill each other. You could stack block instead and shield yourself until the enemy gets tired so you can counterattack. You really do feel like you're brawling in an arena because the crowd will shout at you as the fight goes on - cheering for you if you pull off a cool combo, or heckling you if you run around avoiding combat. When you're doing well the crowd will throw objects into the arena which you can use, like potions, weapons, traps or projectiles. So in one turn you could hit an enemy which applies a bleed, use a movement skill to move out of their attack range, then pick up a rock on your new tile and throw it at another enemy to interrupt a spell they are casting. It feels really satisfying. It also does weapons in a unique way as they directly impact your skills. The weapon in your red slot buffs all red cards, and visa versa with blue cards. So you could have a sword in the red slot buffing attack, and a shield in the blue slot buffing blocks. When you're at a rest stop you can swap cards between red and blue based on which buff you want that skill to have. I found this really interesting but difficult to take advantage of sometimes. I honestly can't really think of many criticisms for Alina of the Arena, but I will say I don't feel addicted to it like some other roguelikes. It's not an S-tier roguelike that you can binge for hundreds of hours, it's an A-tier roguelike that feels great and you can come back every once in a while and remember what you liked about it.

A bit rough around the edges but ultimately a solid and challenging experience in the Roguelike Deckbuilder genre. The unique Hex grid combat is a breath of fresh air for the genre and the classes give a big variation in what build-paths you can choose. It takes some getting used to, and it can be frustrating at times, but worth it for the price.

I love every aspect of this game except for the art style, which isn't my cup of tea. as someone who plays games primarily for art style, it should show just how good this game is in literally every other regard. if this is your preferred art style, even better.
