Most of my time with this game have been offline. This is a GREAT and vast strategy game with lots of replayability. Be aware, there is a unique game mechanic where the more aggressive you are the AI threat raises and will become extremely hostile. The best way to overcome this is to scout and decide carefully which planets and tech you need to capture and hold. There are lots of options in the settings to alter the game mechanics and many different possible play styles and strategies to win. There are some nice people on youtube with guides or play throughs that can give you some help if you get stuck. Worth whatever the asking price is and certainly when on sale. Nice work Arcen Games LLC, two thumbs up!

Very nostalgic and the papers about how the AI worked almost lead me down a career in tech. Also the music is a bop

The most comprehensive, intergalactic strategy game on the market. Endless hours of challenging yet rewarding fun. Save humankind from an evil, out-of-control AI computer built by the humans, and retake the galaxy by wiping out AI orbital bases with your fleets. The AI can have up to 2 of many behaviour options that you choose to create unique enemy elements and mix and match AI teams with diverse chemistry combos and enable unique gameplay for each match. Behaviours affect things like how and when an AI will attack, how smart or advanced it's tech is, or how defensive it is. All DLCs are fantastic and provide their own spins and twists. Multiple factions, ability to hack AI for blueprints or sabotage, massive framerate-killing battles, and the glory of sending nuclear warheads into random systems... because why not. Custom match settings allow even more gameplay depth. For it's age and price, easily the best Sci-Fi strategy game.

This game truly feels like you are an underdog fighting an impossible battle. It manages to be one of the most emotional RTS games I've ever played, despite not really having much of a story at all. You feel the hope, desperation, and dread of your people, which makes victory infinitely satisfying. If you're someone who enjoys playing RTS games against AI opponents, especially if you prefer "turtling" in those games, then you will probably enjoy AI War.

I bought this over the second game largely because it was on sale for like Ā£2 and I do intend on buying the second as well now. In my 38 hours I've lost my first campaign! You really should start to rethink your approach once you realise the menial attacks they launch every few minutes are requiring your entire army to take care of, but maybe it was too late by then anyway. Let's just say I don't think destroying every AI warp gate I could find payed off (it seemed like a good way to buy some time to make more organised efforts at the time). Could have gotten away with much more hacking than I did, so if your hacking budget starts going super high definitely take advantage of it... and assault transports are super good. Honestly I expected more granular complexity from this game based on other reviews I've read, but the complexity is more tactical than anything else. Not hard to wrap your head around but easy to mess up. One thing I'm not a big fan of is how you can't exactly adapt to fight your enemy to much of an extent - you gather a lot of unit types and marks, but each type / mark has its own cap and you kinda just have to always be using as much of everything as possible, and splitting them up is just not worth the effort when you can have them rampaging around as a one-size-kills-all group. All the control over your army composition is in what techs you research, but these are permanent decisions which you can't go back on or modify later. And you don't want to spec overly hard into any given thing, because when the AI goes all in on a massive group of ships which happen to counter what you've got you won't have a fun time.
