After one year playing, I am really satisfied with this game. By itself it is an amazing gaming. Tons of variability, top notch graphics for a fantasy game, interesting mechanics. I woudl say that only the AI is not top-class. But the reall good part is: The developers show a tremendous amount of love for this game, with relevant updates, both for those paying for DLC and for those that not; creating factions is a pleasure, renewed with every update. I am deeply grateful for them. I only dream of the many expansions they do, now and years ahead.

Came from Total Warhammer, never player a similar game before. This game is a gem. Pros: + Game design here is really fun , a lot of things to interact with and figure out. + Programming is great, hardly felt any bugs , performance is good, never thought like there were missing QoL features or badly needed polish. + Customization options for everything are amazing - from your Ruler, to race, to heroes, to culture and even mid-game adjustments via Tomes... Separately those options are rarely new, but it's mind-boggling to see how things stack up. + Campaign map play is awesome , building your empire is a lot of fun with provinces, various resources, making your own cities from scratch and so much more. + Diplomacy is reasonably fun , a lot less binary than Total Warhammer (or even more advanced games such as in Total War Troy). + Combat is good , not Total Warhammer level of detail but satisfying, deep and enjoyable in its own right. + Game is fun in all stages , campaign starts off relatively mild and personal, then ramps up and things get cooked in the lategame, potentially reaching breakneck complexity - a lot better than steamrolling Warhammer slog I'm used to. + Lots of playstyles and viable approaches , game is very RP friendly too. + Updates\expansions add the stuff that would be unthinkable for Total Warhammer or frankly most other games. Whole new map layer for your every campaign? Your entire race changes at your command? So you can play not even a humanoid, but a customizable dragon now - and game won't break for it?! It feels surreal they actually pull it off, amazing work from the entire team. + Meta-progression , basically campaigns give progress for tree with unlockables - it feels very good, adds weights to campaigns and entices to come back for more runs over time. Base variety doesn't feel lacking either. + Characters exist between runs , like, you know, actual characters would in the universe; creating anything here is breathing life instead of making flat avatars, your people can (optionally) find themselves in your new campaigns, reminding you of the path you've walked before - which is very good for such a customizable game. + Modding is there - haven't yet dabbled into it, but at least it's a small pro; Vanilla so far is fun enough for me though. + Good atmosphere and music , game has a vibe to get lost in. Cons: - It may be a bit overwhelming if you're unexperienced like me; Take it slow and I promise it's worth learning the game. - Reliant on magical themes , I would wish that I could do a mostly non-magical playthrough, but I can already go with a variety of more "grounded" magic\alchemy. Besides, it fits lore and atmosphere a lot better the way it is now. - Some interactions and pop-up events can get repetitive , I feel like there could be more variety\flavor in content like that. Probably fixable by modding, but it doesn't bother me much - it's a relatively small part of the game. TL;DR Game is very good, if you think you'll like it - try it for sure.

Short Review: YES... thumbs up... it's enjoyable, fun to play (now), and will soak up countless hours of happiness. Buy it! Long Review: First off, a bit of background... I'm an old PC Gamer who loves the 4X-format. I have played EVERY version of AoW as they released including AoW1 back in 1999. I spent a LONG time playing AoW3, and couldn't wait for AoW4, I was first in-line! I waited nearly a year after release of AoW4 to actually write a POSITIVE review. This game released back in May of 2023, and initially I was hypnotized by the flashy graphics and interesting game mechanics... it probably wasn't until my 2nd or 3rd game after release where I started to notice a problem... I felt alone... VERY ALONE... like I wasn't even playing anyone else (aka: the AI). Simply put, in my opinion, the AI was AFK on launch. It would just sit there and rarely do ANYTHING. It might declare war on you and... NOTHING... you might attack it, they would hide in their cities or run for the hills... you could leave empty cities 10 feet from their biggest armies and they would do NOTHING AT ALL. I kept waiting for a patch, an update, a DLC... SOMETHING that would address the AI.. I played, trying to enjoy everything else that was wonderful about the game, but the AI was just so bad... and after the first DLC came out (Dragon Dawn) and the AI WAS STILL Garbage... I played a game or two of Dragon Dawn, sank my head, and stopped playing all-together... the AI was that useless. I asked around during the 2nd DLC, Empires and Ashes... heard the AI was still broken and didn't bother. FInally... when the 3rd DLC, Primal Fury came out they did a major fix to the AI and I was back... Did they really fix the major problems with the AI? Yes, it's day and night better than the launch AI (and you don't need to buy any DLC to get the AI fix, that comes standard with the free updates). I guess this is kind of expected of a typical Paradox game. It launches with... well "issues"... and eventually, over time, it gets better and better and better. It's why i waited nearly a year to write a review on a game I started playing a year ago. Had I written an honest review a year ago, I would have given this game a Thumbs-Down. If, like me, you played this game on launch and gave up because of the AI, give it another go, they fixed the AI. If you were waiting for it to be out long enough to get enough updates to be a solid game... now is the time to jump in. As a veteran Age of Wonders player, I'd easily say WITH THE PRIMAL FURY/WOLF UPDATE, AoW4 is now every bit as good or better than the final version of AoW3... and there's still more DLCs coming (or so they say). The graphics, gameplay, spells, item forge, etc, etc, etc... it's all awesome. If you like 4X games and a fantasy setting, you owe yourself playing Aow4... you don't need the DLCs to have a good time, but they add a lot of extra content to the game. Thumbs Up, highly recommended.

Great game with a big flaw, which may be a show stopper. Good fun, good skill trees and racial stats, I like how it feels like a role playing game almost as much as a 4x game. The bad: turns take FOREVER once the game progresses to turn 120 or so. Like minutes per turn. On a new 7 PC. It's basically mandatory to use small maps and few computer opponents. The app uses about 75% of my 20 core CPU when it's running but not actually doing anything. I suspect they have some "zombie process problems," and the useful work of conducting AI moves gets squeezed into the tiny fraction of CPU resources left over. This is really such a shame. The late stage games becomes unplayable. I find myself switching the victory condition I am pursuing so as to avoid unnecessary troop movements. also to avoid causing the Ai to move troops. This morning I forfeited a game I was winning in order to salvage some of the skill points I had accrued. I would have rather completed the game for many more points, but at 5+ minutes per turn, it had stopped being fun a long time back. I would say if you plan to play ONLY small maps and no more than TWO opponents, and if you are also patient, then maybe this is the game for you. I'd play this game all the time if the speed problem was improved. As it exists now, it's kind of pointless. I'm trying to be fair here, and I know writing optimal code isn't easy, but WHY are are sequence of expansion packs being released when the base game is so slow it is unplayable? I think dev resources ought to be targeted at the plainly obvious game-ruining problem. More features/art/etc will presumably just make a severe problem worse?
