This game is tough as nails. It looks like a deck builder, but it feels more like a puzzle. When you buy a card in round 1, it's going to be round 4 before you actually get to use it -- which means you're got to be looking at least 3 turns out, for every purchase. That means you'll get enemies in round 1 that you won't be able to do a single thing about, until much later. There is randomness, but a restrained kind of randomness.

So, the theme of this game (post-apocalyptic sorcerers vs. Cthulhu) does absolutely nothing for me and I wouldn't have looked twice at it except that we sell two different flavors of it (the base game and a legacy version) in the board game store I work in. I thought I maybe buy it long enough to demo it so I knew how it worked, but surprise surprise, I enjoyed it quite a bit and decided instead to buy all the DLC. If you like Legendary, it is broadly similar to that. On the negative side there's a bit less of an adventure game feeling over the length of a session than Legendary, which has more of a feeling of exploration and puzzle solving with the bosses, however there's a lot of other neat things to make up for that. I like that you purchase new cards from piles that always available, like Dominion. The fact that you can choose what order you can stack your deck is neat too, for pulling off combos (presumably, I mostly have used the function to destroy cards I don't like that are sitting on top of my discard, but I'm interested in exploring it more later) The different heroes also feel very different from one another despite the fact that they are building their decks from the same cards, but the designers have really used what is available to make each mage unique as creatively as possible. I suppose the main negative is the lack of mulitplayer. I don't love playing different characters by myself, in the forum it says they are planning multiplayer but it's been a couple of years since the last expansion, so I think the game is probably as complete as it will be. Still, there's a lot here already. I wish it were as popular as their other game, Sentinels of the Multiverse, which I didn't care for at all.

Aeon's End is an adaptation of the boardgame of the same name, https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/191189/aeons-end so if you want to know more about it there's plenty of information out there with regards of how it plays. As for the Steam version it's a faithful 1-1 adaptation of the first wave of content, the Aeon's End core box, The Depths and The Nameless, as well as The New Age box. The Steam version plays well and it supports Remote Play as well for multiplayer.

I really disliked Sentinels of the Multiverse, so I kinda dismissed this one by default without a second look. Seems I was wrong to do so. While it shares some core mechanics and gameplay flow with Sentinels of the Multiverse, the deckbuilding aspect turns it into a completely different experience. One that I found much more enjoyable. The "no shuffling" aspect for the deck and discard pile has a few interesting implications, and the randomized turn order makes a lot more difference than I expected at first. Interesting game. As with all similar games, it's pretty hard (though it has multiple difficulty settings).

I'm just going to say it - this is a Dark Souls of board games, and most negative reviews are caused by players getting absolutely owned by this *difficult* game. 1. The game is easy to learn, difficult to master. You will lose a lot, but you will also learn a lot. Pay attention to why you lost. Overran by minions? You probably should have bought more spells. Bought plenty of spells but could never cast them? You probably need to open more breaches. Don't just buy gems thinking you can focus on farming a ton of money. You will fall behind. 2. If you are randomizing cards, realize that every run is different. You can't always get away with the same playstyle, and you really need to plan out your future turns. You can always see what your next turns will be as your cards are always in order. 3. "Clunky UI and user experience" - extreme disagree. It's very simple and easy to navigate. Right click to read what something does. 4. "Hard to figure out what's happening/you need to know every single interaction". Another extreme disagree. You can read the cards that were played and see exactly what happened. Both 3 & 4 are from one of the most "helpful" reviews. 5. The New Age DLC is very well worth it, even outside of sales. The Expedition mode gives a ton of extra replayability and is extremely enjoyable. Not required to have fun though. 6. Solo players rejoice! This game is not only fun with friends, but it's fantastic for solo. 7. No built in multiplayer, but remote play works great and is very simple to setup (make sure you click your friends keyboard & mouse icons so they have control) This game is addictive and I highly recommend checking it out.
