If you're not a fan of either series, there's probably not much that's going to convince you to play this one. The early games in the SAO series had a lot of depth to them, especially the battles and buffs. You could build really powerful characters. A lot of that has been dumbed down, and this title a basically a button masher. There is still a lot of systems running in the background of battles, but its nothing like the Hollow titles. What I enjoy about this game, is having a giant party of characters to choose from, then you just go grind materials and quests so you can build up your weapons. The story is nothing but anime tropes, but I knew nothing about Accel World coming in, so learning about all the new characters was fun. But I could fly around grinding for hours on this game. The map and most assets were just reused from Lost Song. The graphics look very early ps4, but it still runs my GPU and RAM up to the max. So I assume that's just the game not being optimized for PC very well. Because Red Dead 2 doesnt even run the system as high as this game does lol. Edit (11 hours) The game is starting to crash, a lot. [DXGI Error Device Hung Up] seems to be an issue with the GPU, but its not happening when I play anything else. Really disappointing, but I think its safe to say, these games are better played on a PS. TLDR; if you enjoy SAO games this one is fun, just for the gameplay, grinding, and crafting weapons. If you're not a fan of the series already, this isnt the 1 I would try to sell you on.

How have I not written a review for this game? Oi. Past me, what the heck? It's been quite a while since I played this one actively, but I put hundreds of hours in on console, and I'm looking forward to playing it some more in the near future (despite using a potato PC right now, so I gotta tinker with settings to make the game run at a decent framerate without input delay) That in mind, let's have a look at the pros and cons... PROS ~ Hilarious antics from the characters. Yes, this had to be first. ~ Lore-friendly upgrades for both SAO and AW characters' gear, and none of it feels forced ~ Plenty of unique monsters and bosses ~ Interesting concept that was well executed led to some interesting plot devices and stories ~ Tons of extra content, most of it in the form of character specific content (More on this in the cons) ~ The soundtrack. Seriously. Why is no one talking about this? CONS ~ Lost Song combat system, slightly enhanced. Lost Song had a **** combat system. This game inherits some of the issues, but improves the system in some ways too. ~ Weird controls. As a result of the above, some of the controls are wonky as hell. Also, one specific move just... doesn't work for me. (Press Cross and Square at the same time while using AW characters; or A and X for Xbox controls) This was true on console, and it remains true on PC. Maybe it's just me though. No one else seems to be complaining about it... ~ Character Specific Tedium. There are dozens of events that you can only access with specific characters, and you have to raise character specific bonds (meaning you play as one character and raise their bond with another) and it is a lot considering the cast of playable characters. It's also pretty hard to know which characters you've already completed. Still, it's all skits and events, so ultimately not that important (might be some decent rewards in some events though) ~ Seven is not playable. She does make an appearance in the plot, as a support character talking to Kirito and friends but she is not 'logged in' and can't actually join you on your adventure. FeelsBadMan ~ RPG Syndrome. There's a big bad who just did a bad thing. This thing they did makes Kirito and Asuna very angry.... so let's go have fun in town and beat a bunch of bosses and collect loot and stuff while smiling and having a blast instead of actually focusing on doing what we were so upset about 5 minutes ago. This game suffers immensely from RPG Syndrome. Like... how hard it is to lock the dating and fun stuff until after the final boss is defeated and {REDACTED} is rescued? Ignoring that last glaring issue, this game is great. Great audio, great visuals, and a great way to bond with some of your favorite characters from both Sword Art Online and Accel World. Personally, I don't like where the Sword Art Online franchise is going. With each new game and each new season we get closer to Accel World and I'm not a fan. I like my fantasy stuff... I say that here because this is decidedly in the sci-fi side of things, and I still enjoyed it immensely. The SAO games go on sale pretty frequently, and while I hesitate to recommend paying full price, I would absolutely recommend grabbing this one when it's on sale for $20 or less. I think historic low was something like $5 or $6? Just something to consider. NOTE: I'll probably edit this at a later date, once I've re-obtained all the trophies achievements. I just don't know exactly when I'll put that effort in because potato PC and it's quite an investment. (Had the plat on PS4, and I recognize just how much effort this will take to do it again on PC)
