I somehow got this bundled with Shogun 2 on a sale for a pretty low price; keep that in mind when comparing my review to others. That said, I absolutely adore Fall of the Samurai. I had never gotten into Shogun 2 in the past; I'd just bounce off it. When I learned FOTS had gatling guns and naval bombardment, though, I had to try it. This expansion/saga is absolutely incredible. It builds well off the great base of Shogun 2, which I now view as the best Total War game hands down. It feels to me almost like an entirely new TW game given the stark contrast to every single other entry in the series. So many unique features are packed in while trimming fat and making sure the experience isn't overwhelming. My only real gripe is the lack of unit variety across clans. Most unique units are just reskins. I can get past this easily since it makes historical sense. This was a period where military standardization was on the rise. There's less difference between the line infantry raised by Yodo and Tosa than the longbowmen of England and the crossbowmen of Genoa. Truly great.

A true gem of CA's last great total war game. Fall of Samurai, thought it was a DLC that turned out to be standalone game with price of a DLC but a full game of whole map of Japan. Get this instead of Shogun 2 vanilla or Rise of the Samurai. Fall of Samurai is where it is at. - Where low tier units can beat superior units based on tactics such as flanking, terrain, line of sight, terrain, positioning. - Proper fire and reload animations of gun units. - Front row and ranked fire with beautiful individual soldier animations. - Single settlement system. Allows for each settlement to be truly unique and not tied bonuses to like 2 other settlements in same province. - You can split up your armies as much as you want. Not needing a general. - Actually great multi layered wall sieges. - Superb naval battles and land bombardment to support land units - The smoke, marching sound, clash of the calvary, the sound positioning, the roar of the guns and cannon fire, shake, the bass boom, the echoes from distance, weather effects, fire/burning, crash of the gates, scream of the units taking casualties. Very immersive visual and audio effects like a movie. - Tranquil melody that brings out the japanese culture.

The game's fine, but everything around it has become shady as fuck for a AAA studio. They paywalled factions that were part of game you download, now they reintegrated them as normal game content but raised the price as if it wasn't a 12 years old game, and they renamed it into SAGA which it never was. This is not only greedy alone anymore, but onto the greed they added malicious business practice.

I've played a total of 5,665 hours of Total War games across Steam. Fall of the Samurai is the hardest, most rewarding Legendary (Republican ofc) play through of all the games. FOTS is a standalone, the base game is equally amazing. *This is my same review for the base-game*
