Pretty short, took about 45 minutes for me to complete. But that's just the right length - I was kept actively interested the entire time and it also didn't overstay its welcome by being needlessly convoluted. It's an original, creepy idea well worth the money.

Genre setter in the making The Exit 8 is an insanely clever take on the popular ‘anomaly-spotter’ genre. Set in a seemingly static, liminal space-esque environment, the premise of the game makes it seem like a ride in the park, but in order to get to the final exit, you will have to muster all your patience. While the (literal) gameplay loop isn’t anything revolutionary, the final package is a really enjoyable title, thanks to its aesthetics and unnerving atmosphere. Should your experience be maximised, I advise you to go into The Exit 8 completely blindly, with the understanding that this is more of a puzzle game than a horror title. Do you enjoy indie games? In-Depth Review About the genre Anomaly spotter games have been around for a couple of years now, and they are now more popular than ever, mostly thanks to content creators. The premise is overly simple: you are tasked with observing a number of cameras scattered around different locations, and if you notice anything weird / out of place (e.g., an anomaly), report it immediately. The Exit 8 puts a great spin on this genre by making it more interactable: instead of just idly sitting and watching, you are the one who has to go inside all of the rooms and decide if an anomaly persists there or not. If you discover one, turn back at once; if not, continue your walk towards the 8th exit. Spotting the anomalies Now, spotting these anomalies is actually easier said than done. Their difficulties range from being ‘blatantly obvious’ to almost ‘unnoticable’. Since discovering these is part of the game, I do not want to spoil your experience. However, I must warn you: if you wish to get the most out of this title, go in completely unprepared, without using any guides. While it might be tempting to just sprint through the entirety of the game, I highly advise you to just take things slowly and observe everything to its fullest. Some of the anomalies are time-based, meaning if you want to see all of them in one playthrough, you need to take your time on certain levels. Failing is also part of the process, but I suppose it is possible to beat the game on the first try as well. Self-doubt is the key There is one particular element of the game that has gone unnoticed in most people's reviews:self doubt. Since you have no information regarding the types of possible anomalies, as you progress through the levels, you will slowly gaslight yourself into thinking: was that tile always looking like this, or did the man hold the phone like this from the start? Exploring the passageway The game is set in a seemingly never-ending underground passageway with only a limited number of decorations and furniture, while also featuring a man always walking past us without noticing. The liminal and retro-infused graphics, paired with the monotonity and repetitivity of the surroundings, create an eerie and unnerving atmosphere right from the start. Turning right on a corner to see whether your guess is valid or not is a highly intense moment. Conclusion Pros Cons + Great reimagination of the ‘spot the difference’ formula + Minimalistic, liminal aesthetics + The level of dread is always on the rise - Having no list of possible differences, it’s hard at first to notice each difference Final rating: Very Good You can find my review chart [url=https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3006409099]here! The Exit 8 is a highly enjoyable puzzle-horror title, which highlights how minimalistic the game design can be at times - and still manages to create a highly intense experience. While the gameplay loop itself can be infuriating at times, after you pick up the game’s rhythm, it will get much more enjoyable. This is exactly what I always wanted from "liminal space" horror, a game in which the enviroment truly is your main enemy. The minimalist presentation adds a lot to the experience too. When you boot up the game it just starts, no title screen and no intro cutscene, just straight into it. From the get go you're confused, you'll wander around aimlessly for a bit trying to figure things out for yourself. You'll quickly notice that the corridors never seem to end, until you read the instructions next to the sign with the exit number: "If you see an anomaly, turn around and walk the other way, if you don't, keep going". It's a VERY simple gameplay loop, but it works very well for this type of horror. Failing to follow the instructions will put you back at Exit 0 (You're trying to reach Exit 8 obviously). Some anomalies are more conspicuous and bombastic than others, and some are so subtle they will make you wonder if the game is just messing with you when you realize you're back at Exit 0 after what seemed like a completely normal permutation of the corridor. You'll eventually grow paranoid, and then frustrated. This is where I'll have to say it might be a hard sell to say a game has made me "frustrated", since generally speaking frustration in a game is never a good thing (assuming it's not the player's fault). But this is the one instance in which I think being frustrated adds to the experience in a positive way. If you can stick with it, you'll realize that the frustration will only immerse you further into the game. Because you wanna exit right? You want to go home, or wherever else away from this metro corridor. You really just want to get the fuck out! So you'll become paranoid! Your frustration will drive you to the point where you'll begin scrutinizing the enviroment neurotically, staring at every little smudge, poster, looking at the briefcase man up and down. You're not even sure what you're supposed to be looking out for, you might even start memorizing completely useless information about the corridor. Number of lights? What do the posters say? Are they usually this far apart? Are the tiles aligned correctly? Has this smudge always been here? Which way are the cameras facing? You're gonna become so familiar with this damn corridor you'll begin to naturally having an easier time spotting irregularities, even if it means getting a close, long look every single loop you pass by. And then sometimes you'll find that things look completely normal, so you're ready to go forwards. Except... despite how good you've gotten at spotting these little discrepancies, you're gonna still have that nagging feeling on the back of your head: "What if I missed something?" You're sure you didn't miss anything, but what if it changed something it hadn't before? What if changed something I didn't pay attention to yet? Even after you think you've outsmarted the corridor, you're still fraught with anxiety, and you'll find yourself doing a double/triple/quadruple take before moving on or moving back. I've never seen a game make me this distressed over which way I'm going. And it's not like you have that many options, you can just go forwards or backwards, but you're gonna be thinking long and hard before chosing. I'm also glad there is no plot for this game. This level of paranoia might have been deflated if you were experiencing this through the eyes of a character. As it is, it feels like an actual nightmare. You're thrust into it with no context, just vague rules you know you need to follow for whatever reason in order to escape. I feel like a lesser game would have made the place really big and filled it with spooky gremlins with lore and "levels" and whatnot, and in doing that would have turned the uncanny horror of being stuck in liminal space into a generic "scary maze game". Sure, some of the anomalies in this game are out to get you, but none of them take too much attention away from the true star of the show: The goddamn corridor.

I have never felt so paranoid playing a game that was so relatively unhorror-like. This game will make you question your sanity and hate yourself for missing small details. 100% recommend!
