This game is my Roman empire. It haunts me. The 8 hours I have in this game (as of writing) tell nothing of the amount of time I spend thinking about this game. I wish that there was a way to give a mixed review instead of solely positive or negative, but I'm rating this game positively just because of the amount of space it occupies in my brain. The first time I beat it all the way through, I got the bad ending because it honestly is one of the most frustrating gameplay experiences I've ever encountered, and I was trying to fly through it as quickly as possible. It has bad controls and no direction, and it's buggy as all hell. There were times when my game would just not load the items necessary for progression , completely soft-locking me in some cases. Like one of the earlier chapters of the game has you looking for a bucket to use on the well, but in my game, the bucket just didn't spawn in either of the locations it was supposed to. Later, I needed a gas canister, and that didn't spawn, either. The few shooting sections in the game are also just abysmal and don't work. I really enjoy the game as an atmospheric post-apocalyptic walking simulator, and the few points where it deviated away from walking simulator territory fell extremely flat because of the janky controls. However, this game's story and characters take up so much of my heart and mind, and I don't know why. Just walking along with the nameless companion and taking pictures of both him and the world fills me with such inexplicable warmth. Even though the game does not contain that much dialogue, the dynamic between the two main characters is something I keep coming back to. Maybe it's because of what I imagine for them while playing; maybe I am imposing something on the game that's not actually there. But like I said, I got the bad ending first, and you lose your companion, and when I woke up in the metro station without him by my side, I cried. I'm currently working on getting the "Continue to live...?" ending, where you keep your companion with you because... I don't know. There's something deep inside me that cannot rest until I finish the game with both main characters together and alive. This is extremely subjective, rambling nonsense about... [vague hand-wave] the ability for even art that is not objectively "good" to get its claws inside of someone and move them in signifcant ways. TL;DR: Do I like this game? Yes, and I will probably keep revisiting it every small handful of years to reimmerse myself in the world and everything. And between playthroughs, I will continue to not shut up about it to anyone who will listen. Can I actually recommend this game? Well... in a word: no. I am well aware that I am kind of a weird guy and that it's incredibly unlikely that this little indie project will do for anyone else what it has done for me. And without that deep, personal attachment to it, the bugginess and jank is really not worth sitting through. The act of actually playing this game consistently makes me wish I liked it a little less so that I wouldn't be compelled to keep revisiting it. But if you're a masochist for bad controls and getting soft-locked out of progression, or you just wanna try and figure out what the hell I'm on about (buddy, not even I know...), go for it.

35mm focuses on a post-apocalyptic atmosphere in Russia in a spreading epidemic where two strangers travel together to survive in this environment. The character you control has a system for collecting food, batteries, medicines and items needed to continue. There will be certain moments when the character will feel fatigued or injured, showing this in our item book with blood marks, and it will be up to you whether or not you have certain items to keep him healed. No matter how much you try to focus on this survival system, the character tends to stay sane for too long. Being a survival game, the character has a knife and over the course of the game you'll get other weapon items that can be useful both for opening impenetrable doors and for defending yourself against the dangers around you. During the game there is a system for collecting notes from former survivors and the opportunity to take photos with Petrovich's camera. At certain points there will be certain puzzles to complete too in order to keep going. Composer Dmitry Nikolaev has tried to add certain tones to the past reality, but has done little to make it feel captivating, orchestrating certain composers from past eras to try and enhance it. The game is based on three different endings and this will be based on certain choices or items during the game. 35mm tries to set itself in a reality similar to the universe of Metro and Stalker through its background echoes, where often the radioactive monsters transformed are actually human beings in their search for the dreaded salvation.

Love this walking simulator game with its old-world vibe. It makes me think of other popular games set in the former USSR, such as Metro, Stalker, Stay Out, and other titles that don't delve too deeply into unrealistic scenarios.
