I purchased Amerzone at the same time as Syberia 1 and 2, and decided to play this earlier game first. I thoroughly enjoyed my first encounter with Benoit Sokal's world. You play as a journalist visiting an old man in a lighthouse. He sets you off on a quest to return a sacred egg that he pilfered from the unexplored land of Amerzone. With a detailed diary as a guide, your quest leads you through a lush jungle landscape to solve the mystery of the white birds. As a fan of the Myst games, I felt right at home with Amerzone's game mechanics. While the graphics quality has aged poorly (I had trouble spotting some essential details), the art is captivating (especially Valembois' diary). The music, voice acting, and ambient sound are all well done. This game required some tweaking to compatibility settings and Windows Data Execution Prevention to run on my Windows 10 system. After that, it ran without glitches. Steam overlay didn't work, but that's only a minor annoyance. I highly recommend Amerzone to fans of Myst or of 90's point and click adventures. Other players may find this game cumbersome or dated.

A very short Point&Click\Adventure game, which is the first videogame written by Benoit Sokal(Syberia series). An intresting storyline, simple puzzles, immersive 'n fabulous views. Were catching a good vibes while exploring an impressive land of The Amerzone. Fantastic!

Based on a similarly named comic by game creator Benoit Sokal, this game is the father of the Syberia series and the ideal gateway into the Point-and-Click adventure genre for minty fresh beginners (especially for frustrated first-time Myst players). Story: Set in an alternate steampunk version of early to mid-20th-century earth, the story concerns you as the featureless first-person protagonist working as a journalist who is obliged to journey to the somewhat punnily named Amerzone by the dying request of Alexandre Valembois: a washed up French Indiana Jones with way more painful regrets than the Oncler from Dr. Seuss's "The Lorax." Your goal is to return the remarkably still living and sacred egg of the mythical "White Bird" to its habitat and the land of whose native tribe whom he stole it from for a shot at recognition in the museum hall of fame, which sadly the a-hole political gaming bigwigs at said museum (no doubt buddy-buddy with the other snobby elitist museum pricks from Disney's Atlantis) only used an excuse to humiliate and flush his career. Meanwhile his two fellow explorers parted their separate ways faring no better: one became a backwater village padre begging the man upstairs for forgiveness, and the third styled himself as a wanna-be Tropico-style dictator trying to shove his evil colonist d*** down the nation's throats at the expense of its native cultural values. The most tragic regret on Valembois's part is if he'd stayed permanently in the Amerzone, he'd have a lucrative career as a South American "Marty Stouffer" documenting his own "Wild America" while banging his true love Yekoumani, the resident smoking hot, topless native babe. But as above he gambled all that goodness away with his theft of the sacred white bird egg that got him thrown out of the scientific community into the proverbial waste bin where he wasted away in a lighthouse like Milo Thatch would've if not for his grandpa's rich friend Preston Whitmore. Poor Yekoumani died of heartbreak without ever seeing him again, man that's one of the most heartbreaking moments in gaming history. As you explore the Amerzone you encounter Valemboi's friends all on death's doorsteps which likewise lament their past screw ups. Indeed the game's primary philosophical themes are about the deep scars of past regrets and anti-colonialism, which couldn't be more tragically true in real-life context. If it's any consolation, you're aided on the second-last level by a native girl, implied via Valemboi's journal to be his and Yekoumani's granddaughter Gameplay: The puzzles are pretty easy to solve. Much of it involves scavenger hunts for the right tool or plot device for the right solution. Whenever your lost, consult the journal and local clues which provides more help than Myst's unburnt library books did. I beat the game in 8 hours to my amazement. Just don't jump the gun at the final level by placing the egg at the epic ledge before exploring the rest of the volcanic crater area or you'll be permanently stuck from a glitch which I encountered. Conclusion: Overall Amerzone in my opinion is the best game for training noobs with an authentic jungle atmosphere, divergent evolutionary alien fauna and narrative themes about past regrets, consequences and the will to make due amends. However it doesn't explore it's story deep enough, and the ending wasn't on a satisfying note. If anything, the least that could be done is to have the player hook up with the helpful native girl, at the game's conclusion providing a perfect book ending/contrast to Valembois's own failed love life. RIP Benoit Sokal. May your story-telling legacy outlive you and your legacy earn you a seat in pop-culture Valhalla next to Marvel writer Stan Lee and Berserk's author Kentaro Miura.

I first played this game in PS1 and had only Disc 1 and could not complete the game as a child. Now that i could finally get it on steam and complete this game, here's my thought on this.... Story : Its actually a simple story that you get to explore through the documents you find during the first chapter itself. You get additional fragments of story as you go on but most of it is already covered in chapter 1. Graphic and Presentation : As for the period the game was released is seems there were games that brought out better graphic than this one, but that could be forgiven as the point and click mechanism along with 360 degree view on both axis gives you a feel of being in a scene. Presentation is great in terms of environment and objects placements, and the change in cursor based on functionality of objects in environment gives a added guidance to player. Game-play mechanism : Its a point and click adventure game focused on puzzle solving. Carry objects in inventory and use them wherever applicable. Transitioning from scene to scene is fast and has very minimal delay that i could hardly notice. Like mentioned before, the cursor change based on the function of objects in environment. Sound : They have done a great job with sound designing, I like how the sound gets muffled while indoor especially wind and animal noise. Also, as you get farther away from the scene with source of sound, it gets gradually inaudible. Overall experience : Its a nostalgic experience for me along with the feeling of closing an unfinished chapter in life. The game is not really long and could easily finish withing 2-3 hours. Only thing i felt is it could have been bit longer with much more lore to explore.
