I recommend it but it's a tough recommendation at the moment. Pros: nice artwork, unique mechanics, interesting setting, lots of enemies, interesting cards and synergies, does plenty to set itself apart from StS and other roguelike deckbuilders. Cons: Performance issues, numerous translation issues, sound design is very bad and nowhere near the level of the visual design, game is too easy at it's base level but gets better after that.

Just played a bit of this and it's really good for card game fans, my only small gripe is that the music is a bit repetitive. I really like the openness for builds and how card art serves to flesh out the character's personality.

It's Slay the Spire, but Xianxia. And it's awesome. Decks feel well-put-together, cards play smoothly, the art is FANTASTIC, and the translation is pretty good and only very rarely spotty. I'll put it this way: I didn't realize it was Early Access until a friend who I recommended it to pointed it out to me. All the characters feel distinct and fun. The bosses and enemies are all solid. Deckbuilding is fun, and rewarding, once you get a grip on how the game even works. One of the four characters starts out locked - I'd disagree with this choice, not because I disagree with locking a character, but because A Zi (the locked character) is WAY easier than Ao Yu. Lock Ao Yu instead, she's a lovely little creature but her gameplay is far more strategic and skill-based than any of the other three. As far as characters go? You've got Mo San, the alcoholic father (not mentioned if he's a dad but he gives dad vibes), who does high damage and generates high defense, at the cost of his own HP. Then, you've got CHILD WITH A GUN, Chuan, whose gameplay focuses around loading and shooting high-damage bullets. Next is A Zi (evil woman supreme), who is all about indirect damage through summons, and thematically focuses on the concept of gu. Lastly, there is Ao Yu, the supreme lovely creature, a little autistic (canonically, she has a very good trait called Autism, she's good autistic representation imo) who casts spells, gets stressed out, and has a meltdown (turns into a sweet dragon). Each character feels markedly distinct, they each have different playstyles and deck options within their own card list, and they're all fun enough you feel compelled to play each. Unlike other similar games (cough Slay the Spire cough) where you'll find a favorite and stick to them pretty religiously, at least in my experience. Overall? Yao-Guai Hunter gets a 10/10 in my book, and I'm excited to see what more they can do with it. It's already good enough to be a fully-released game. Minimal bugs or issues, only one game-breaking bug in 16 hours of playtime (and that was the only bug I ever found during play), amazing artistic choices, bold and rewarding gameplay? It's a winner for sure, chef.

Yes it plays like Slay the Spire; that's not a bad thing! There is tons of fun new stuff in this game; less BS to learn; get right into the action! If you enjoyed Slay... then buy this game!

This may become my favorite game in the genre, and i have played most games in this genre. When i think about trying a new roguelike deckbuilder, i ask myself the following questions: [*] How is the pacing of a run? [*] How is the pacing of the ascension system? [*] How good is the deckbuilding process? [*] How good is combat? [*] How varied are runs? [*] How is the balance? [*] How good are the various characters? [*] How much is copied from StS? The short answer to all of these questions is that the game handles it very well. Compared to StS, it plays quite differently. Decisionmaking outside of combat is a bit less than in StS. There is no map to navigate, but you get to deceide one of 3 relics after elites and bosses. But inside of combat decisionmaking is much more interesting. That is to large parts thanks to being able to hold mana and needing to pay for reshuffling the deck. It is very important to consider each turn how much mana to spend and how much mana to bank for later. Also every character starts with an active ability (and can get more through relics) with a cooldown, which adds more to the decision making. To summarize the things i think this game does alot better than StS: [*] Combat is much more interesting here. [*] Every character has a large set of unique relics, which they get after every elite and boss. These are also extremely powerfull (for example one of them gives block equal to twice the cards in your hand at the end of the turn). [*] Most cards have their own animation. Seriously, the game looks amazing. [*] The characters feel much more fluid. A large reason for this is also that there are barely any powers here. Powers in StS are mandatory to scale during bossfights but can also be extremely bricky.
