I personally found this a delightful game to play. Endowed with a stunning art style and a myriad number of puzzles, it fully engaged me for hours. This is not a game that you rush through unless you're a speedster! Your enjoyment of the game depends on how much you emotionally invest into it. The story is about love, betrayal, forgiveness and sacrifice. This is not a perfect game as it suffers from poor translation from Chinese from time to time but I was able to follow the story well. Some puzzles can be guesswork as objects that you can move aren't highlighted well. You play as Yao, a little girl who leaves her village trying to find out the source of the haze that is suffocating the country. Yao soon teams up with Yuan who acts as her protector and does all the muscle work in the game. You are able to switch from one to the other easily. Along the way, the pair meet many quirky characters as they try to find the power of the Bright Bird who could restore the balance of the world again. I found all the partners bar one. The game has a good map which comes up via the Tab key. A question mark shows where you have missed a person. You can instantly travel to any place of the map that you have previously passed through. As some achievements require you to backtrack such as getting the puzzle pieces, this is a great asset to have. The graphics are the highlight of the game and are delightful. I loved all the Chinese cultural touches. The environment of the game changes constantly, so the artwork is shown to its full glory. My screenshot finger is nearly worn out as I tried to capture the essence of this unique world. There are multiple surprises and many hidden secrets and underground caverns. As you travel along, you collect jade beads which look like donuts. These are useful to open up chests which contain more beads. Some characters won't let you past unless you make a payment in these beads. You have some difficult decisions to make along the way whether to pay money or sacrifice a friend. The beads also open doors in the palace and other areas, so be sure to have plenty as the deeper in the game you go, the more beads you will use. This is a side-scrolling game and there is quite a lot of platforming to do; some of it quite precise. You will die often. I reckon I died over 500 times!! Some puzzles are easy, others are quite difficult. I got quite a lot of satisfaction completing them. A couple of puzzles were sound ones, which you couldn't skip, so not good for deaf people. There are a few colour coded ones too. But the creativity of the game mechanics and puzzles were astounding. I have never come across such a wide variety of them. You have to be willing to look into every nook and cranny. When Yao comes across a phoenix station, she carries the light with her and that activates lights, candles and even fire. It also kills some nasties. Yuan can't do this. There are many hidden ladders, portals and underground caverns to find. Great fun, so keep your eyes peeled! Music was gentle, relaxing and with a Chinese influence. The game has plenty of save points. This not a violent game, but one misstep can kill you. There is a boss fight at the end, but there is another ending too. If you get stuck, there is a good walkthrough on YouTube and one guide on Steam. I had to refer to it to find some things. Highly recommend for puzzle lovers and those who appreciate good art. 8/10

Beautiful game, soothing soundtrack, super cool puzzles and gameplay. The translation is not very good, but it doesn't take away from the story. Definitely recommend!

My recommendation comes with a LOT of caveats. The good: the visual design is astonishingly good. Every new area had us stopping to take in the new art, admiring the sheer creativity that has gone into creating this world. It is so varied, and at no point did we think the designs had been phoned in. However. All the money seems to have gone to the art, because the story/translation and gameplay need a lot of work. The translation is bad. Not just bad grammar, but inconsistencies. Sometimes a name was kept in Chinese (i.e., "Ying") and other times it was translated into English ("Shadow") and it got hard to tell when they were talking about the same character. A few times, we couldn't follow the logic of the story because the translation was too confusing. However, that didn't really bother us, since we mostly laughed and found it charming (although I do think it's a shame, and I think the game deserves a better translation). The real sticking point is the game design. Even with the option to highlight interactable objects on, we often missed what we could interact with. We'd spend several minutes confused about where to go simply because we had no clue that something could be pushed/pulled or climbed. This isn't a game that gradually builds up things either, with tutorials or guiding elements. It'll throw an entirely new puzzle mechanic at you near the end of the game, no previous building blocks to guide you. Some areas required you to take a leap of faith... but if you screw up, it's death. Expect to die a LOT in this game. I didn't even mind the deaths per se, but the reload is just the slightest bit too slow. Deaths got frustrating, especially with how imprecise the controls were (on an xbone controller). If you're the kind of person who needs to 100% a game... um, good luck! This game auto-saves constantly, and if you've screwed up, there's no going back. There are also no (English language) guides so you probably won't manage on your first attempt, especially since there are quite a few missables. Overall, I enjoyed my time playing Bright Bird. But I can only recommend it if you have a lot of patience and don't mind frustrating puzzles and bad translations.

This is SOOOOOO beautiful!!!! Really, the artwork is mesmerizing. Did I also say GREAT puzzles and a very soothing soundtrack? In the English version, some dialogue boxes are displayed with weird line breaks, and you run into grammatical errors every now and then, but that's not a huge component of the game, and even so one I can easily overlook. By comparison, this is like a Chinese version of GRIS, which is one of my all-time favorite games. If you like games with quality artwork, just buy this already!
