Another one of those games I wish I could leave a neutral review. In a world where I crave detective games, the Danganronpa series, and in turn it's stand-alone RainCode, is the junkfood equivalent in the genre. It fills you up, and it sure was a detective game, but my burger was undercooked and they gave me the wrong sauce. Let's talk about my main interest first, the mysteries. They're mostly functional, and you do feel clever if you figure them out early. Some have minor errors, and the last case had a few noticable dips in quality when it came to the game's rhetoric. They're okay, and at least a lot better than those of Danganronpa 3. The story is whatever. It holds up for the most part, and if you enjoyed Danganronpa going of the rails, you will enjoy RainCode. That said.... The characters are weak. There are maybe two characters I think were somewhat interesting, but most of them, including the main cast, have no depth and are just there. And even the main cast has it rough when it comes to screentime. Somehow, with only five other characters in the main cast and 24 hours of gameplay, they felt less present than 15 characters in a 12 hour Danganronpa game. I find it impressive how hard they dropped the ball in this department. However, the most egregious part of this game is how incredibly vile the other women treat eachother. Whilst the original Danganronpa had its issues with its more 'traditional' view of gender roles and how they are displayed, RainCode somehow makes it much worse. I could keep the amount of civil interactions that two women had on screen in this game on one hand. It felt aggressively written by a dude with a harem fantasy. Then there's also the really weird throw-away lines around a non-binary character in the main-cast. Which is a shame, because they are one of the two more developed main characters. All in all, I am hungry for more detective games, I want to stop having junk food as my only option. RainCode is decent, and nothing more.

I've finished 65 games so far this year, and this is a contender for my personal GOTY. Rain Code is an absolutely fantastic successor to the Danganronpa legacy and a must-play for fans of mystery/detective games. That's why I'm honestly sad that I haven't heard more people talk about it, possibly related to the fact that I only knew about its release outside of Japan on Steam by reading a post on its non-English Steam page about an upcoming language patch on October 1st. Who was in charge of the marketing on this thing?

When Rain Code was released on Switch, a lot of reviews said that it should not be compared to Danganronpa. That’s why I’ve been putting it off for so long. After finally playing it, I can say that, while it’s partially true, it definitely has the exact same vibe and atmosphere. Only this time it’s a bit more cynical, whacky and imaginative. Interesting cast of characters, engaging mysteries, recognizable music and, most importantly, good writing. The dark humor mixed with horny jokes here and there make a very bizarre combination I haven’t seen anywhere implemented properly for quite a while. Shinigami as a sidekick seemed annoying at first, but as I progressed through the story she became my favorite character. Because that personality is not normal nor it is a cliche. The PC version is also very good overall. The performance is a bit underwhelming, since it’s running on Unreal Engine 4 and was not properly optimized for it, but the visuals themselves are amazing. It really feels that art by Rui Komatsuzaki was perfectly translated into 3D here. For the reference, mobile RTX3070 can run it in 1440p at 70-90FPS with no stuttering. So, if you like murder mystery, dark humor and a tiny bit of non-intrusive fanservice - you’ll definitely enjoy Rain Code. Update after finishing the game: It was absolutely brilliant! It's definitely something that I'll remember for a very long time.

If you're a fan of Danganronpa then I can't recommend Rain Code enough for you. It has the same character designer and composer as Danganronpa as well as the same creator, which leads to the game feeling very familiar if you've played those games before (in a good way!). The structure of the game is also similar to the Ace Attorney and Danganronpa series, as it essentially follows the cycle of daily life -> investigation -> trial. Unlike Danganronpa, Rain Code's trials take place in a Mystery Labyrinth instead of the Class Trials. However they're set up quite similarly to the Class Trials, as many of the minigames from Danganronpa return (sadly that also includes Hangman's Gambit) and you still get to cross-examine the detectives, witnesses and suspects. The Mystery Labyrinth justifies the minigames a little more than Danganronpa did, as it was always a little weird that Hajime would start skateboarding in his mind in Danganronpa 2. Some of the cases are amongst the best I've played when stacked next to the Ace Attorney and Danganronpa series. The atmosphere in Kanai Ward is amazing and there's also a few sidequests that remind me of the Like a Dragon series in how memorable they are. There are more positive things I have to say about the game, but given it's such a story-focused game I won't say anything because I want to avoid spoilers in this review! As for negatives, I had some complaints about the writing in places and I wasn't a big fan of one of the cases. There was also some mild shader stutter, but because a lot of the areas in the game are reused this shouldn't be something you encounter for very long. I also got lost a few times trying to navigate Kanai Ward at the start which was a pain! If you've been waiting for a new Danganronpa or Ace Attorney game then I fully recommend Rain Code! This will most likely be my GOTY for 2024. Rain Code released in Japanese on Steam in July and in English on October 1st. I'm studying Japanese, so I played through the game as part of my studies when it released in Japanese. If you aren't studying Japanese then don't worry about the rest of this review. If you're interested in playing the game in Japanese; [*] My Japanese level is currently N2 - N3 (I recently narrowly failed the N2 exam) and I was able to understand most of Rain Code. [*] There are some characters that have quite difficult speech patterns, so don't feel disheartened if there's some characters that make you pull out Google Translate every now and then. [*] After the first 2 chapters you'll have heard most of the detective/crime-scene lingo so you'll be good on that front too. [*] The game has an amazing backlog system where you can replay previous voice lines, which is especially useful if there's kanji you don't recognise. [*] The font is a little difficult to read if you're used to very basic Japanese fonts, but I promise you'll get used to it. [*] There is no furigana. [*] The game should take around 35 hours in your native language, but it will probably take you 60+ if you listen to every voice line to completion like I did and go back in the backlog often to check for new words.

CURRENTLY ONLY IN JAPANESE/CHINESE/SIMPLIFIED CHINESE! Beautiful port, looking forward to October! This is but a short technical review of the current game release. The Western release will be later this year along the official console releases at October 1st. So far, I played the game up to the arrival in Kanai Ward and the first Mystery Dungeon. RAIN CODE Plus profits enormously from the power offered by PC and current gen consoles over the initial Switch release. Much higher resolution, FPS, more detailed character models and improved effects like lighting and post processing give you the most impressive experience of this beautiful and quirky detective adventure. Usually, I play games in 4K with DLDSR (2K native, DLDSR 2.25x DL), the game offers but native resolution in Windowed mode and strangely only HD in Fullscreen? Luckily, steam launch commands allow to go for 4K instead. FPS can be set to 30, 60 or unlimited. If you want something in between you either have to limit FPS over your driver or use VSYNC and a refresh rate of your choice (in your desktop display settings). Unlimited and without VSYNC, the FPS went over 300 so far (not gonna strain the machine with that). VSYNC plus 120Hz, showed a stable 120 FPS so far. Currently, there is no option for Upscalers like DLSS or FSR, hopefully that changes in the future (to boost low-end machines). Textures are improved in some areas (I assume generic textures from a library, e.g. ground textures) while bespoke textures for the game (like the train car walls) seem to be the same as in the Switch version (which were slightly higher than the display resolution). Character models, however are vastly improved and look very crisp and detailed. Together with the improved lighting and performance, the overall impression is great. The graphics in this game are more about art style and expression which RAIN CODE Plus absolutely nails. I didn't experience any hickups or crashes in my current gameplay. I will proceed through the first dungeon, till I get a full performance impression when exploring the more demanding Kunai Ward and will update this review. So far, I'm very content with the technical side of the port and although I could refund the game at this point, I won't. + very high performance + highly improved general visuals + stable gameplay + awesome soundtrack + awesome voice acting (check switch gameplay videos for the English version) - a bit more flexibilty with graphic settings would be nice - no upscaling support so far (even if not needed, less strain on the GPU is always welcome, especially in the summer) Full System: i9 13900k, Gigabyte Aorus Z790 Master, 2x16 GB DDR5 GSkill Trident Z5 (no RGB crap) 6Ghz, MSI RTX3080ti Gaming Trio X, Soundblaster Z, WD Black SN 850X 4TB M2, Corsair HX850 Platinum PSU (850W) FOR UE5: Disabled E-Cores and CPU Boosts in BIOS for stability.
