peak xianxia game. i can feel a lot of effort and passion was put into this game. it really taps into you player's choices, and many things feel consistent with the xianxia drama troupe and just the right amount of emphasis. i love the storywriting, shoutout to the great art, i enjoy being pretty/handsome scholar, not a macho vibrant youth. a lot of backend work too, considering my seamless experience so far. the unique characters' storylines are really touch-and-go though, compared to the long hours you have to undergo through ascension. i wish to see much more of these well-made characters, although they do have some quests that reveal some aspects of their lives/personality to you. it feels just like being in a xianxia novel of my own and i love it.

Having finished 2 runs, here's a run down of my experience. The first few 150 years is pure chaos. It's what I'd call the MEAT of the game. It's a race against time, and everything is against you. Plots here and there that are not marked on the map or quest menu. After that up to the turning point at the 500 year mark, you will get more time, but less things to do. The real kicker is when you reach year 750, followed by year 800. I missed this plot the first time around because it's only mentioned in the chinese wiki. This is what I'd call the "Ending" of the game. Let's get real here, the only time heavenly tribulation matters so much for me is for Star Bell. Finally got her to ascend after gifting her everything I could to assist her. Never have I been more stressed than save scumming to see her succeed. After the year 1,000 event, everything is like that "The Caretaker - It's Just a Burning Memory". Time flows so fast, with nothing much to challenge you. Your contacts which often bugs you becomes more quite. Until you realize most of them are... LOST... Everyone you know and care about will be dead before you ascend. At best, I got a sea monster and a ghost to witness my ascension. It really gives a full experience of what it means to be a "Cultivator". Devs, if you are reading this, and GOOD JOB. If there is one thing I beg of you for the sequel or update, it's to give notification or hints to plots, instead of hiding it in obscurity. The first time around, I missed most of the game. The 10 year cultivation for techniques does not help too. TL;DR: This game's story and feel hits harder than it should have. The story itself i quite entertaining if you manage to get a hold of the chinese guide. The only downside is the "combat" and the pacing.

This game is more about tracking and planning your path to immortality. Its probably the least 'gamified' game in the genre I've personally played. If you're into min maxing, tracking, 'spreadsheets/guides' - and you like the genre, its probably a good game for you. But if you would like the game to be a bit forgiving and carry some weight for you, this isn't for you.

I spent 100+ hours on this while enduring messy MTLs and other, smaller hindrances that games with an official translations wouldn't have. ... 10/10 would do it again to revive old man Wei Wuji. Seeing him smile in the flesh as he bid me farewell during my ascension made the journey worth it.

This is a very good cultivation game, but it is not the cultivation game for me. I think if I were new to the genre and this game was the first I'd tried, I would have bounced off it immediately. Here are some scattered thoughts on it: - The combat mechanics are great, but they lack dimension. You and the enemy face one another and fire off combat arts that are selected and set beforehand. There's no movement and no party system (that I've encountered), so think...Pokemon, I guess? In order to push through the midgame you will need to seriously consider your strategy and gather martial arts that are all synergistic with one another, otherwise you'll quickly be overpowered by NPCs with well-built kits. Pay attention to all the effects they're building up on themselves and on you, you may be killing yourself by casting attacks or depleting your energy supply without realizing it. Personally, I've always preferred either action combat or FF Tactics gridlocked combat, so having a turn-based system where both characters are locked in place was both visually and mechanically unengaging. That's a matter of taste; I think this is a good system with a lot to offer for the right player. - The world is somewhat small and limited in interactivity compared to similar games in the genre (Tale of Immortal or Hero's Adventure, for example). The difference isn't huge, necessarily, and if I hadn't played those other games, I might not have felt that this one was lacking. But as things stand, Hero's Adventure has a lot more life in its world, and Tale of Immortal has way more options. Road to Reincarnation (this game) has less life and less to do, on top of a less interactive world map than either one. It suffers mostly in the comparison, and may be a good fit for a player who wants something more streamlined. - The immortality/lifespan mechanic is actually impactful. Cultivation, martial arts practice, travel...basically everything in this game takes in-game time to do, and lots of it. As you achieve new realms of cultivation, your lifespan increases significantly, but so does the required time-investment to improve further. It might initially take months to improve a demanding skill, but by midgame it will take years or even decades. This sounds brutal, but the game is generous with lifespan extensions, and I think it's balanced. I was annoyed by it initially, but with time I came to appreciate that this is the only game I know of in the genre that makes you feel the passage of time, and therefore the importance of achieving longevity. I'm giving this a thumbs up because it's a good game that will be very rewarding for some people, and I'm just not the "some people" it's for.
