"Ghost Marriages are Easier to Perform than Real Marriages" Which was said by a performer who arranges ghost marriages for certain families yes even today. This is a century old tradition that boasts the spirituality and social culture in China and possibly other Asian countries as well. The review was written after a significant research into Chinese culture as well as completing the game 100% achievements in order to write an in depth review to honor this little gem. 💀Story: Got 'em context 💀Characters: Spooki even the protagonist 💀Gameplay: Might be a little bit racist 💀Graphics and VA: Eeerie 💀Achievements: There is that one last achievement.... Story Story centers around this ritual where you do a wedding ceremony for deceased people. You are the bridegroom you go to brides home to your wedding after partying with your friends. But yeah, you are greeted with creepy paper dolls, paper foods, and deceased portraits of your mother and father in law. The story has elements of horror, not RE level scary but there are minor unexpected jump scares. You discover your wife was spooked away by another bride wearing a white bridal dress. So you journey through trying to find the twisted truth of your misfortune. Trying to save your wedding basically. I liked how the culture is mapped into the game, you learn about hell bank notes, about the unique ceremonies, about masks and superstitions. You also learn BG history of other ghost characters which somehow relates to you. There is a plot twist at the end so you can brace for it. Characters Not many characters a few main characters, and some side characters form the whole story. The protagonist is desperate to marry his sweetheart, the bride is cautious and mysterious, the exorcist is there. Then there are ghosts of a boy and an old man. Each meeting a tragic end and haunting the protagonist. There is also an old lady who looks suspicious as hell. There are also supernatural mythological characters at one point which I won't give away who it is. Hint is: just black and white. Cultural history Many don't know but this particular ghost marriage ceremony is still being celebrated today mostly by the wealthy if usually when the couple dies in a tragic accident and the ritual is performed by parents and the white reaper to ease their hearts (psychological perspective) and maybe to give some relief to the dead (paranormal perspective). It is also performed as in a living bride or bride groom marrying the dead, it was performed if a person couldn't find a bride or groom in time too (history says) The whole event is made by paper, the couples figures, the house, their wedding bed etc. The dowry and food are real though. At the end of the ceremony when the "paper figures" have "consummated" the wedding by laying down in the bed. The paper elements are burned so as to free the souls. Certain regions do it differently depending on their own specific societal culture. It's done usually when the parent, or the bride or groom receives signs in their dreams from their dead loved ones. IT is done to appease them, gran their needs, make them well in afterlife. The game incorporated many elements from the ritual and formed intelligent puzzles for the player. Gameplay The game play progresses smoothly and bug free and has mostly of point and click variety with an inventory on which you can use items appropriately. The puzzles are there which can be tough for some but not impossible. It includes a puzzle in the last level where nothing makes sense if you don't understand mandarin no matter how much clues you get. So i had to get some help for that and I think its a bit unfair for the English players, but we do appreciate the translations though. Puzzles come in the form of doing exotic rituals and common novice HOG puzzles. I loved the exotic ones with riddles. Its a Middle class horror with some jump scares and spookiness too but not brutal. There is some cooking bits too which I liked. Its pretty straightforward like a normal adventure point and click nothing fancy. The game expands into 4 or 5 locations: House, Village, Apartment, Some temple site,Funeral parlor. Graphics and VA Very eerie and well voiced with emotions. The art really brought out the spookiness. Cultural elements are drawn intricately with great care. Great use of sepia tone and gray tones. Achievements Didn't have much trouble getting most of them, you unlock most of them when you complete the chapters and keep a close look out and check every corner. What gave trouble was the achievement where you have to 100% everything. if you are an achievement hunter please note that when you check the hint at the tutorial you loose this particular one. And when you get an a new object always a popup window appears with the "get hint" button where i personally clicked it at least 3 times and had to "restart" the whole game over and over to get the achievement. So be patient and careful. Keep your mouse on hold always! Overall Nice little short gem to get a splash of spirituality in China and its culture and also to get scared on a Friday night. This has a series which I may probably buy the next one after judging some game play or trailer.
