most unintuitive system ever, really wouldn't recommend for newer players come back to it though, this is the most stupid fun fun you can have playing touhou no trance is not a real category it can't hurt you

It's one of the easier Touhou games, but that doesn't mean it's bad - in fact, it's my favorite game in the series. The Trance mechanic is probably one of the most unique gimmicks in the mainline games, only really outclassed by Unconnected Marketeer's card system. It gives the player the choice between using it like a powerful bomb that gives them complete invulnerability for a while, or as a tool to gain extra points or life/bomb shards, as it increases how much points/shards divine spirits give when collected. However, the usage for it is very limited and you'll really only be able to use it a few times in a game, which is a shame. Most of the bosses and spellcards are fine, with the only exception being Yoshika's last spellcard because I HATE BOSS HEALING MECHANICS!!!!! All in all I would give it an 8 out of 10 but since Miko is in it it's instantly a 13 out of 10

Not one of the best Touhou games but still pretty solid shmup. Complaints out of the way first: game feels lazy. There are 4 characters in total with only 1 shottype each and 3 of them feels the same - wide shot unfocused, concentrated focused with some small gimmicks between characters. If you pick any of those 3 you pretty much play the game same way. Besides the normal 1cc ending there are also parallel endings. How do you get them? By beating the game again but not using bombs as much. So it just stacks even more repetitiveness on the top of the one already existing. TD is just boring at times. What about the gimmicks then? Well the Trance mode is just a fancy bomb that you lose on death, spirit collecting is just slightly less annoying than UFOs as spirits just stay for a few seconds at the top of the screen and then disappear so if you want to grab your bomb or life fragments you have to quickly go up and down the screen. Less tactical than UFOs and also less annoying but I really don't understand what was wrong with "you kill stuff and they drop bomb or life powerup" or just point based 1ups from older games that it constantly needs changing. Not to mention this means you have to go closely circle enemy boss to grab all the goodies after each spellcard and I won't lie - I lost a lot of lives stupidly doing this because while player character and bullet hitboxes are clearly defined enemy boss hitbox - not so much, so those deaths always felt cheap. In general the gimmicks aren't that interesting and don't make the repetitiveness any better. And this game kept the weird gameplay change where P powerups don't turn to points on fullpower. While this was understandable in UFO due to ufo feeding it doesn't make any sense here and is just annoying. Now despite all of that I'm still giving this game a positive score. Why? Because of Youmu. The 4th character you can choose feels completely different to play with different shottype and different way of approach each challenge, it feels like she should be in a different game altogether, and despite that game works really well with both her shottype and shottypes of other characters, and that is pretty impressive. Honestly this could have been another side game with her as the only playable character and I would've been happy, she is really that fun of a character to play as to the point she saves the game. And despite previously mentioned flaws core gameplay is still good, music is excellent (doki doki waku waku <3), there are couple new types of bullets that fit characters that use them well. Speaking of characters, the newly introduced ones are for the most part memorable. Surprisingly the main villain is the most boring part and is overshadowed by her colorful henchwomen menagerie. Also individual spellcard practice is finally back after a long hiatus. This alone makes it one of the most accessible Touhou out there. So despite negative first impression this game leaves it's still pretty good just nowhere near the quality of other great games in the series.
